Did anyone watch Graham Norton with Olivia Coleman last night?

I don't mind her - haven't made my mind up whether her daffy "silly me" persona is genuine or all an act, but anyway. Alex Scarsgard is gorgeous, but that film? Often I see films promoted enthusiastically on there and think hmm, not sure I'd bother going to see it, but Wicker? It looks bonkers. OK a sweet love story, but bonkers! Bonkers in a 'not worth my time' way. And then we find out that Olivia and her DH are producing it! The two leads seem so mismatched. Or is it just me?

OC, hmm. Not sure about her at all.

I heard her on Chain Reaction on Radio 4 being interviewed by Vic Reeves and it was weirdly tense and uncomfortable.

Supremely talented actress, undoubtedly. Will not be going to see Wicker however.

I read once that she's really shy and hates giving interviews as herself, so finds it much easier to hide behind a character. I suspect the quirkiness is part of the act.

Not paying for watching anyone shag a tree.

Exactly, I’ll shag my own tree thanks.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 10/10/2026 13:37

I really like Olivia Colman. This does sound weird but I like the fact she’s different and a bit wacky.

I wondered that too. I've read that actors have confidence playing other people but not being themselves.
I could never watch Robin Williams in interviews because he would just go into different characters and hardly be himself.
I absolutely loved him as an actor though.

Great actress, unbearable person

cariadlet · 10/10/2026 13:49

I find her a bit irritating but do think she's a good actress. The best thing I've seen her in is Tyrannosaur - not an easy watch but very good. I also liked Landscapers.

Flowerpots276 · 10/10/2026 13:51

I love her and think she’s really funny. Might be a bit of an act but I like it, she’s comes across and sweet and a little self deprecating.
Shes also looking amazing at the moment and seems more confident in her own skin.
I would happily be besties with her and think she’d be loads of fun 😊
She did start out in things like peep show, so she’s used to hanging out with funny people and I guess that’s where her roots are.
Male comic actors are always trying to be funny on telly so I think she’s just doing the same, it’s her job after all

Lomonald · 10/10/2026 14:01

She is also in a new Film with Andrew Scott about Ian Charleston she plays Dr Margaret Johnston who pioneered Aids medicine, so Olivia has range 😀

Callipygion · 10/10/2026 14:57

The showing off, preening and me me me of people on that show have me turning it off pretty damn quickly.

BeardySchnauzer · 10/10/2026 15:00

Everything I see her in she’s just Olivia Coleman tbh and I don’t know if that’s because she’s got a distinctive look or that she always puts a bit of herself into the role

AS must have a portrait in his attic

SirChenjins · 10/10/2026 15:01

The film looks brilliant imo, definitely going to see it - I like OC on screen, but find her 'I'm mad, me' persona v irritating.

She looked v different on Graham Norton - in addition to the hair, I''m guessing she's had quite a bit of work done.

Justaquestionplease · 10/10/2026 15:03

Can't stand her.. whether its an act or not, she makes me cringe

It looks insane 😂 olivia Coleman loves a "Quirky sexy film" ! The film about Queen anne was saucier than I thought it would be.

When it came out I needed to leave work dead on time to see it and my colleague and good friend (male) said to our big boss before a meeting started when I told him I had to leave on time - yes because she’s going to see a film that has fingering in it. It was very saucy!

Oh, I thought he was a lot younger! But it's more about his Viking looks. I see her with someone dark and rugged, like Heathcliff.

He's made of wicker so I'm sure he won't look like a Viking.

Serious answer... Wicker is (in the UK/Europe) normally woven thin willow branches, the bark is still on. On top of the willow is a really flexible wood and it's unlikely to give you splinters. HOWEVER it looks flat in the photos - willow should be round. The costume was made by Wētā Workshop in New Zealand, so I have a suspicion they used New Zealand flax (Phormium sp.) for the top layer of the 3D printed costume.

I'd much rather watch this than Wicked!

Wicker | Wētā Workshop

In the audacious comedic fable Wicker, an ostracised fisherwoman commissions a husband from the local basketmaker.

I find her “oh silly me” nonsense really irritating. I assume it’s an act, she got into Cambridge. I doubt she was all “oh gosh aren’t I just so ditzy I barely know my own name” in her Cambridge interview.

I saw an interview with her on Graham Norton a few years ago where she said she couldn’t remember the plot of the film or her character's name. “I’m so silly I can’t remember a thing, it was so long ago and even though this is my actual job I didn’t glance at a synopsis before I came out to a pre planned interview where I knew I’d be asked”.

I do tend to like her in things though.

It was a filmed she had done a few years prior, not one she had just done.

khakipant · 10/10/2026 18:39

The trailer for this makes it look amazing

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 10/10/2026 18:50

I liked her in Rev. She gets good roles and makes them her own but I don’t follow her career very closely.

Notanotherrestructure · 10/10/2026 19:00

Her new look really suits her. She’s a great actress but I thought she was mismatched in The Roses with Benedict Cumberbatch.

The Roses was an awful film I cringed my way through it!

rookiemere · Yesterday 10:53

I suspect the reason we feel she is mismatched in films with her leads is because she looks like she has had no facial work done and has a “normal” face and figure of a 52 year old, also is with leads roughly her own age or a bit younger.

In films it’s not unusual for the man to be a lot older than the woman so that’s true. If the woman is older (eg Nicole Kidman in that film whose name I can’t remember) it becomes a plot point

but I didn’t think there was a mismatch with cumberbatch tbh

I think the perceived mismatch with AS is because he looks young! I still can’t believe he’s 50

Did you see IKEA riffing on this?

They labelled their wicker furniture as "husband material".
