I must admit I've not watched from the beginning but it's giving Archie's Castle from Balamory!

this is not going to be done until after those kids leave home isn't it

3smallpups · 07/10/2026 21:33

He is rarely so obviously exasperated!

SwedishEdith · 07/10/2026 21:52

The bloke reminds me of that Swedish chef, Niklas Ekstedt. In fact, I can't work out, from their accents, if they're Scottish or Scandinavian.

thenightsky · 07/10/2026 21:52

The wife has worn well over 10 years. Husband looks like he's aged 20 years!

She's Eastern European which was clear from her accent at the start. As the years have passed she's become more and more Scottish. Not sure about him.

I do really like the house though , for something simple and relatively cheap , it’s got style

Nope

thenightsky · 07/10/2026 21:56

Yes, its lovely and light inside.

SwedishEdith · 07/10/2026 21:57

Sweet kids. He's sounding more obviously Scottish now but it felt like they didn't speak too much at the start.

thenightsky · 07/10/2026 22:00

Next week's looks good. I must remember to tune in.

One was a baby and the other a toddler at the start. So probably not that chatty about their parents building ambitions. It’s been they’re whole upbringing that house

Sorry, I was referring to the parents not being too chatty earlier on.

ByTipsyShark · 07/10/2026 22:07

Feel really sorry for the kids spending 10 years living between building sites, all for their parents vanity project.

I wasn't watching properly, I thought Kevin said the husband had been brought up in sight of the test centre.

Yes he did. The guy was from Edinburgh, the wife was Czech I think.

No, I wasn't paying enough attention at the start.

He was Scottish but missed what he did for a living - was he an artist too?

He is a designer and carpenter.

Last night’s episode was astonishing,
I thought the couple were extremely selfish. The son’s whole childhood dominated by their stupid project next to a railway line!
After all the tosh about the sea view, could anyone actually see it?
Wonder if they are actually living in it yet.
Bonkers.

elgreco · 08/10/2026 09:14

How did they not kill each other ?

Nolongera · 08/10/2026 09:27

Only 4 episodes to this new series I think?
Anyway, we have been watching these on nights we have a drink, right back to the last century.
The format hasn't changed much but there used to be a round up at the end where he would tell you how much the new house was worth compared to how much they had spent.
One of the very early episodes has an enthusiastic prospect all done up to the nines, fur coat, the lot, telling you how excited she is, then at the end, bedraggled, exhausted, telling you how much she regretted it.
Is I am honest, it's part of why we watch it.

I think this should be required viewing for anyone toying with the idea of home build or extensive renovation. They spent (guessing, him) ca £330,000 on the build, plus land costs. They ended up with a very smart, modernist house, suited for a haute bourgeois financier, it wasn’t really “them” and I think this showed on their faces at the end. I could not see those children enjoying this house. They would have indeed been better off buying a new build or something needing minor renovations, & not wasted 10 years on this. I mean, I love sea views, but I look forward to them when I go on holiday!
GD tend to be expensive vanity projects, but generally undertaken by people with cash or means. They poured every spare cent for 10 years into this - they could have gone travelling, supported kids interests, done more for the family, instead of this. I found it very sad, & a condemnation of the UK obsession with property.

100% agree.

It was a slither of a sea view. They made out it was going to be panoramic sea views and it wasn’t

Kevin only went back for the last time last month. And there was way more than a months work to do. Reckon it will be Christmas next year at the earliest
