This starts next week

S2 - which isn’t linked to s1 so seems no need to watch it but if you want to the thread here

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4709428-the-light-in-the-hall-wed-and-thur-9pm-ch4-tv-pace-no-spoilers?utm_campaign=thread&utm_medium=app_share

The new episodes return to the fictional town of Llanemlyn as a controversial plan to expand the reservoir “reignites long-buried tensions”.

A brilliant Welsh cast come together, with former Emmerdale favourite Sian Reese-Williams (https://www.tvguide.co.uk/articles/10-hidden-gem-best-drama-tv-series-you-probably-havent-heard-of-summer-of-sport-the-gathering-top-dog/) back as Caryl.

Sian is the only returning cast member in series 2, which is more like an anthology series, than a sequel.

Here’s everything you need to know about The Light in the Hall: Still Waters, including plot, cast, start date, and filming locations.

Caryl Huws is the central character in the Welsh crime drama series (known in Welsh as Y Golau).

In series 1, Caryl was working in her father’s butcher shop. In series 2, she is an aspiring journalist.

The upcoming episodes follow ex-convict Rhys Owen, who returns to town after 20 years in prison.

It’s worth saying that he has always protested his innocence.

In 1995, activist Llyr died in a bombing, and his cousin Rhys was jailed for his murder. Fast forward to 2025, and Rhys returns to a town facing a new reservoir expansion protest.

Season two sees Siân Reese-Williams reprise her role as Caryl, who has returned to education to become a journalist.

While looking for a story, she becomes fascinated by the death of Llyr Owen in an explosion at a reservoir in 1995. Llyr's cousin Rhys, who was convicted of the murder, returns to the town after serving thirty years in prison.

The official synopsis reads: "Told across two timelines, the story begins in 1995, when activist Llyr Owen dies in a bombing and his cousin Rhys is jailed for the crime.

Thirty years later, Rhys returns home to a community once again divided by protest.

Young protesters Mabli and Hari reignite the conflict, drawing in trainee journalist Caryl. As she digs deeper, long-buried secrets emerge, including affairs, lies, and hidden evidence, which forced the town to confront its past.

The second series features an ensemble cast led once again by Siân Reese-Williams. She returns to play Caryl in the Channel 4 crime drama. Soap fans will know Siân for playing Gennie Walker in ITV’s Emmerdale between 2008 and 2013.

She’s also famous for her leading roles in Hidden, and Wolf. Siân recently played the victim’s mum Carys Davies in the Channel 5 drama (https://www.tvguide.co.uk/articles/the-downfall-of-huw-edwards-channel-5-drama-martin-clunes-disgraced-bbc-news-presenter-plot-cast-start-date-true-story/)Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards.

Keeping Faith and Out There actor Mark Lewis Jones (https://www.tvguide.co.uk/articles/out-there-drama-itv-cast-martin-clunes-mark-lewis-jones-louis-ashbourne-serkis/) will play convicted murderer Rhys Owen, while Bang’s Nia Roberts stars as Eve Davies. Sherwood and Hustle star Robert Glenister portrays Robert Davies.

Ive not read whole thread as am avoiding spoilers . Only watched ep 1 and really bothered by ages. The daughter must be about 22? But the death of Llyr was in 95??

Robert Glenister is only 12 years older than the actress who plays his daughter. I thought they were husband and wife at first. I'd be insulted if I was Glenister!

Hari is the son of the policeman and the shop owner. The shopowner’s brother was the man/boy killed in the explosion in ‘95. Supposedly Mabli’s father.

Piggywaspushed · 27/06/2026 20:21

I have now watched more and still bewildered. The actress who plays Mabli is 25.

Oh

i didn’t reliese hari was son of policeman and shop lady

I knew shop lady was sister of dead man. But also means sister of sexy mlj as they were brothers

but that means if I’ve got this right they hari and mabli are cousins and shagging ?

You have not been paying attention @Blondeshavemorefun!!!
😂😂😂
Shop lady is a first cousin of Rhys.
Rhys and Lyr were first cousins.
Their fathers were brothers who fell out.
So Hari and Mabli are first cousins once removed afaik. They would have shared a great grandfather.

So if the men were cousins so sexy mr Lewis is also shop ladies cousin

making the kids 2nd cousins then. Tho think cousins can marry and shag

OP posts:
deeahgwitch · 28/06/2026 08:49

Read my last post Blondes.
I think they are first cousins once removed not second cousins.
I can never figure out the difference
though 😀

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/06/2026 08:52

I did. No clearer apart from not brothers 😂

OP posts:
Blondeshavemorefun · 28/06/2026 08:54

Still puzzles. Need a family tree diagram 😂

shop lady and 2 men are cousins

so shop lady’s dad is brother to old man - dad of men cousins ?

OP posts:
deeahgwitch · 28/06/2026 09:01

I just googled it and I think they are second cousins. 🤷‍♀️🙈

deeahgwitch · 28/06/2026 09:03

Yes shop lady’s late dad is the brother of cranky dad of Rhys (Mark Lewis Jones).

NewAgeNewMe · 28/06/2026 09:04

Think they are second as well.

to be first cousins once removed ( I think) is
if one first cousins has a child other first cousin is then first cousin once removed

oh god that doesn’t even make sense

deeahgwitch · 28/06/2026 09:09

We’ll agree on second cousins. They share a great grandparent and apparently that’s the clincher 😂

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/06/2026 15:52

can definitely be confusing! Here’s the difference:

  • Cousin (or first cousin): These are actually the same thing. A first cousin is someone who shares the same grandparents as you. For example, your mum’s sister’s child or your dad’s brother’s child.
  • First cousin once removed: This is one generation apart from your first cousin.
  • Your first cousin’s child is your first cousin once removed.
  • Likewise, your parent’s first cousin is also your first cousin once removed.

The word “removed” tells you there’s a difference in generations:

  • Once removed = one generation apart.
  • Twice removed = two generations apart.
So in summary:
  • Cousin = usually means first cousin.
  • First cousin = shares grandparents with you.
  • First cousin once removed = either your first cousin’s child or your parent’s first cousin.

Yes, but THE AGES STILL MAKE NO SENSE!

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/06/2026 17:18

He was in prison 20 yr so daughter would be that age ish

OP posts:
Piggywaspushed · 28/06/2026 18:14

Yes, but think it through. The death happened in 1995. He was in prison 22 years ( we were told). The rest of the events happen in our times. That is not 22 years ago! So he must have been out of prison 8 years. Fine.

MLJ and co are all the right age to have been about 20 in 1995 - so 30 years ago (the main actress is indeed 52) .

It's like whoever wrote it is my age and is in denial that the mid 90s are in fact 30 years ago.

It's Mabli's age that makes no sense whatsoever.

Don't get me started again on the casting of 62 year old whichever Glenister it is to play Malbi's granddad and father of a 52 year old woman! Let alone how English he is.

Is this all explained in episode 3 or something??

Piggywaspushed · 28/06/2026 18:31

OK, AI helped me. It is a deliberate plot point. Which must mean Mabli failed maths and biology ...
