New 4 part drama starting this week - thriller

An unexpected inheritance has chilling consequences in this domestic thriller starring Eleanor Tomlinson as Amanda Blakefield, whose ordinary life is turned upside down when she's left a vast sum by a deceased man she's never heard of.

But the mystery legacy draws her into a bitter entanglement with a family whose past is full of shocking secrets.

Matthew Lewis also stars as Amanda's husband Jimmy, alongside Denis Lawson as the mysterious benefactor, Martin Worral while Rebecca Front is his widow, Fiona, and All Creatures star Call Woodhouse is their son, Anthony.

Look out for Paula Wilcox as Amandas mum Linda and Stephen Tomlinson as Boots

Oh it was ridiculous which was a shame as it got off to a good start but like all Channel 5 dramas became ridiculous. I couldn’t get over the fact there was a character called ‘Boots’ for no apparent reason. I thought it was going to be really significant and his real name was going to be revealed which would make everything else make sense! It was a comedy name really and I just couldn’t take any scene seriously when someone with a furrowed brow was panicking about where ‘Boots’ was which was more like a cat’s name.

Also the bit where she ran out of Boots house after he’d been shot (although unclear why he was) without telling anyone. Again made no sense and left her open to blackmail especially as she’d been all over the village asking for him then got in a taxi afterwards just further down the road. It just got more and more ridiculous and the motivations of everyone involved didn’t really hold water.

How did he steal his money ? I thought he paid him to go away

I don’t think I was that invested in this. Until I saw the recap I didn’t know that Amanda’s mum was missing. Then when I came on here at the end of the last programme I found that Boots’ son had shot himself. I must keep dozing off during these programmes!

The care home rang her and said she was in the garden. Then vanishes and lock on gate broken

Boots was shot as was going to tell her that her dad was alive - that Anthony wasn’t Martins son and was his

But Anthony didn’t find out that Boots was his real dad till after he’d killed him, when his mum revealed it. Still not sure why he shot him.

The husband was in cahoots with the taxi driver/dad to kidnap the mother to put pressure on the main character to take the inheritance.
I wonder when the long lost dad contacted the husband and set out the plan and the husband was all like "that sounds like a great plan!"
Also taxi dad needs to hang around the local area pretending to be a taxi driver in the hopes it would all kick off and she would need lifts.
The mum then dies in a boat after being kidnapped in the night from her care home. Everyones fine with this and the main character goes back to serving beans at the cafe with her sons furture "ensured".

Just finished this and can't believe Amanda and Jimmy have just gone back to work in the cafe like nothing has happened 😳

Also, I don't really understand Jimmy's motivation for starting this whole thing in the first place. "Providing for Luke" when they seemed to have a nice home with a happy stable family life doesn't make any sense to me 🤨 Surely it was just greed on Jimmy's behalf?

Yeah I thought all along that he was just after the money so he could benefit from it himself. I don't get Amanda giving up most of the inheritance though. I'm sure working in a cafe is OK, and I would never look down on anyone who does, but if I had been given an inheritance that included a big house worth the high 6 figures/possibly over a million, like feck would I choose to reject most of it and keep working!

PMSL at Boots being a cat's name. 😆 It really is! 🐈

I think Barry gave Martin some money to
invest…I guess he told Barry he’s lost it all when in actual fact he hadn’t?

purpleme12 · 11/06/2026 22:00

So I'm watching yesterday's 10 minutes in when the mystery man rings and says 'Your husband and your mum are safe. Take the money and all this stops ' I don't get that though cos she is taking the money isn't she. It's the dead man's family who are taking her to court and don't want her to have the money

Meredusoleil · 11/06/2026 22:02

This whole sorry saga just goes to show even more than ever that sometimes having a lot of money causes more headache, heartache and harm than good. Better not to have had it in the first place imho!

What a load of twaddle that turned out to be! Good start, ridiculous finish.
