I think I've got a crush on DCI Gene Hunt

So I've just watched Life on Mars and I am now watching Ashes to Ashes which I think I am enjoying even more.
Somewhere along the lines I seem to have developed a crush on DCI Hunt.
He's very much of his time of course but he's actually really honest, loyal and cares about fighting criminals/evil. I guess he is firm but fair.

I find him very amusing to watch 'you're surrounded by armed bastards'

Did anyone else feel strangely attracted to him? I sort of miss more old fashioned men. I know that is really uncool to say that but so many men nowadays seem so feminine/unmanly.

Just wait, it gets better and better. Sooooo wish I was watching it for the first time.

You also might be interested in Mad Dogs, really so good!

Gene and Alex's chemistry is amazing

@SqueakyFromme Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes are both on iPlayer

Dollymylove · 16/05/2026 22:12

I LOVE Gene Hunt. Hes rough round the edges but I reckon hes a big softy inside 🤣🥰😂

threepictures · 16/05/2026 22:16

what you havin’ for tea? I’m ‘avin oops’

realbutterplease · 16/05/2026 22:31

Obsessed with Gene Genie! I’ve watched both series several times! My dad was a GMP detective and I asked was it like that in the 70s, he said no, it was worse 🤣 he absolutely loved it too!

wait til you get to the scene in Ashes to Ashes when he reems off several modern day boy bands in one sentence, and Alex’s reaction, absolutely brilliant!

Philip glenister is a hunk. And I think he lives not far from me, I’ve seen him out.

We get spaghetti hoops JUST so we can say this 🤣 also we nearly called our first cat Bolly

When I was in labour with DS1 I was so high on G&A that I was kind of daydreaming/hallucinating about fighting criminals with Gene. We’d only recently watched both series. Great times. Must watch them again 😁

Noooo I liked him but didn’t fancy him - preferred the detective with the blonde hair (Chris was it?).

Sloelydoesit · 17/05/2026 00:18

I get you. You are also behind me in the line!
Ok, I'll watch it again 😁

avignon1234 · 17/05/2026 00:21

God what a series Ashes to Ashes was, I don't watch much TV and this must be one of my all time faves. I grew up in the '80s and so much of it is realistic, and very funny. Love it. Feel like watching it again from the start now.

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 17/05/2026 00:29

I fancied one of the others, Ray.

What is Marshall Lancaster doing now?

Since Life on Mars ended, the actor appeared in both Casualty and Doctor Who. However, Marshall decided to leave the world of acting and set up his own construction firm. In 2013, he established Marshall Lancaster Plastering and currently works as a contractor in Macclesfield.

I honestly had no idea. I mean he's a middle aged, slightly overweight, slightly rough looking guy. I was amused at my growing crush thinking I really need to get a life.

Just goes to show that woman are attracted to so much more than just looks.

Absolutely, I agree that looks are not that important.

Gene Hunt is the original dad bod, manly, protective, has a passion for something and is good at it.

A man with something to absorb him is an extremely attractive thing.

Fun Fact of the Day - the actor was at school with James May.

SnowFrogJelly · 17/05/2026 01:05

Love him 🩷

Twinklechoc · 17/05/2026 01:12

I watched these years ago...it might be time for a rewatch, thanks for the reminder!

Haha, everyone loved him when it was first shown 😅

This! It's why they made Ashes To Ashes. Gene Hunt was never my cup of tea but I know what you mean about old fashioned men, I've got one! He has plenty bad habits and frequently drives me crackers, but at the end of the day he's on my side and nobody is going to push me around, they wouldn't dare! Plenty of modern men are lovely, although many can be a bit wimpy, but lots are also toxic AF and old fashioned in all the wrong ways.

I think the thing with Gene Hunt types is that they just crack on with life. They wash their faces with soap and water. They go and fetch their kids from school. They don’t moisturise and they don’t do looksmaxxing (what is the word I’m looking for?). That is very attractive. A man inspecting his wrinkles in the mirror isn’t attractive, but a man with wrinkles is, especially the ones around his eyes because he is happy and smiles/laughs.

Yep, totally opposite to men these days. Yet I would wager he’s a total softie in the right circumstances.

CaptainMyCaptain · 17/05/2026 07:43

Strange - I always found him totally repulsive. Maybe I'm older, I was a young adult in the 70s, and knew too many men like that in real life.

I remember men like him too, usually had a slightly sweaty smell from the polyester shirts. Didn't put me off though, I think its a pheromone thing rather than sweaty armpits. 🤣
