Recently Ive watched Life Begins and Fat Friends. I love the absolute normalness of it all. Very ordinary, British and nostalgic. Whay else would I like?

Stella - Ruth Jones

I have never heard of this. (Stella.) Just looked into it, and it looks really good. I will hunt it down, and watch it. There's loads of episodes too. Nearly 60! How did I miss this? I really like Ruth Jones! 😊

Thank you for this. 😘

Spaced was basically a documentary of my early 2000s London life.

MissAmbrosia · 15/05/2026 20:54

Coupling

I mean I loved At Home with the Braithwaites but it wasn't 'normal' 😆😆

Well, they started off normal. And it's great. 😃

Cold Feet
This Life

Jam and Jerusalem. Still one of my favourite shows ever all these years later.

Mistresses.

A bit later than your shows but The Coroner (the one starring Claire Goose) is good.

bigbluefish · 15/05/2026 21:28

The Thin Blue Line 👮🏼‍♀️

elliejjtiny · 15/05/2026 21:32

Love the coroner, it's great. Following with interest as we've been feeling a bit adrift since the latest series of beyond paradise finished.

We really enjoyed episodes, in the club, not going out, the it crowd and extras.

elliejjtiny · 15/05/2026 21:33

Also a bit older but love goodnight sweetheart for the ultimate in comfort viewing.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 15/05/2026 21:50

Gavin and Stacey - brilliantly observed character comedy

Black Books - absurdist and very funny

Green Wing - set in a hospital and difficult to describe. Surreal, exaggerated characters and fantastic writing.

The Smoking Room. Very mundane setting, all the comedy is in the writing. I loved it.

FoulBlister · 15/05/2026 22:07

Down to Earth with Pauline Quirke and Warren Clarke.

Other series along these lines. Not from the OPs era but gentle, well written, amusing.

Back starring Mitchell and Webb. Geoffrey McGivern brilliantly plays one of the most hilarious and honest characters ever.

Can you keep a Secret. Very recent with Dawn French and Mark Heap.

Awwww, I love the Royle Family. Smile

Then dinnerladies should be perfect, it's wonderful!

Outnumbered and 2,000 acres of Skye are the only ones I can think of that hasnt been mentioned here.

I also used to love a program that was shown late at night abiut three hippies that used to drive around in an ambulance, named ‘ambience’. I remember almost peeing myself ss Théy decided to petition outside à fish shop in one episode, and they shouted ‘save the fish!!! Yeah! Stop battering ‘em!!‘

one was called Frogger. Thats all I remember.

missspent · 16/05/2026 06:10

Two Thousand Acres of Sky, but don’t think you can get it anywhere. Soldier Soldier and London’s Burning?

Globules · 16/05/2026 06:17

Cutting it

Vicar of Dibley

It's 90s rather than 00s but I think As Time Goes By is my ultimate, "normal people, not much happens but it's all lovely" TV show.

It’s from the 80s but I loved Making Out. Based in a factory in Manchester (I think).
I’d forgotten about The Smoking Room till I saw it mentioned on here just now. I loved it at the time! Couldn’t make it now, though..!

The brilliant Phoenix Nights?

And, I don’t think it’s been mentioned on here but the absolutely wonderful Early Doors. It’s written by Craig Cash and it’s got huge Royale Family vibes. One of the best British comedies ever, IMHO.

tompoolery · 16/05/2026 12:09

Two more recent ones:
Scarborough with Jason Manford.
The Cockfields with Joe Wilkinson

I’d totally forgotten about Green wing - loved it, it was totally mad!

From 2006 , afterlife with Andrew Lincoln and Lesley Sharp .
Not a comedy and has some sad bits .

Loved dinnerladies too

I need to rewatch the early Benidorm for Steve Pemberton
