We’re introduced to Anna, a nun who is devoted to the church.

Priest David lives his life in a similar fashion.

However, when the pair develop feelings for one another, their budding relationship forces them to re-evaluate their bond with the church.

A series synopsis tell us: “Both are deeply committed to their work in the church and in their community. Neither are expected to fall in love. But, when they do, both are forced to wrestle with what it means for them, their vows, and their relationship with God.

Falling is a witty, moving, contemporary romantic drama that is as honest as it is full of heart.”

6 part drama with an excellent cast.

Leading the way are Paapa Essiedu and Keeley Hawes.

They’ll play devoted duo David and Anna in Falling on Channel 4.
Essiedu has delivered memorable turns in Black Mirror and Gangs of London. He also starred in I May Destroy You, The Capture, and Babies (three of the best BBC dramas (https://www.tvguide.co.uk/articles/best-bbc-dramas-on-bbc-iplayer/)).

Meanwhile, Keeley Hawes is one of the UK’s most bankable actresses. She’ll be familiar to many as Zoe Reynolds in BBC crime series Spooks. She also played DI Lindsay Denton in Line of Duty (https://www.tvguide.co.uk/articles/line-of-duty-series-7-robert-carlyle-cast/). Recently, she portrayed Cassandra Austen, sister to Jane, in BBC One’s 2025 historical drama Miss Austen.
A small ensemble joins the duo, with the following stars part of the cast:
• Jason Watkins (The Game, Dirty Business) as Peter
• Niamh Cusack (The Virtues, Heartbeat) as Francesca
• Rakie Ayola (The Pact, Kaos) as Muriel
• David Dawson (My Policeman, The Last Kingdom) as Phil
• Adrian Scarborough (Gavin and Stacey, The Chelsea Detective) as Francistell

I love Jason Watkins. Anyone see him in Friday Night Dinner? 😄

CaramacBar · 24/05/2026 13:06

Also the Gordon Shakespeare character in the Nativity films was hilarious.

CaramacBar · 24/05/2026 13:21

The convent garden looked gorgeous in the first episode. I'd be happy tending cabbages there.

Going to the park together would set the tongues wagging. Someone would be bound to spot them. Enjoyed the second episode

I hope nuns and priests have a summer version of the habit. Looks hot.
Nuns don't normally wear full make up do they? Like Anna was in the first episode?

i did think her eyebrows looked very shaped for a nun.

WhatsitWiggle · 24/05/2026 23:41

Ive watched 3 episodes now. I'll watch the rest on catch up. There seems more to David's back story and I wonder what led him to priesthood in the first place. His sister doesn't appear particularly devout.

Surprisingly I had to give up halfway through episode two. There cannot be a greater fan of Paapa Essiedu’s acting talent than I am, and Keeley Hawes is usually between reliable and excellent, but this was just embarrassing.

Excruciatingly badly written - always a risk when the writer is so very revered they’re allowed to do anything. I too have been in close proximity to nuns (numerous retreats) and they’re out in the world - more than capable of navigating a clothes shop.

The nurse character is lovely, but it’s so tedious to cast and actor known for villainous parts and have him play a villainous bishop.

I’m disappointed - but will watch this thread; maybe I’ll be persuaded to try the rest.

CaramacBar · 25/05/2026 08:29

Anna said theirs is a closed order. Not sure if that makes a difference?

I'm enjoying it but probably best to drop it if you think it's badly written

I’ve just watched the first episode and I’m fully in with it. I’ve had a lifelong interest in what makes a woman commit to god, as a nun. It’s a fascinating subject. I love the cast, great actors.

purpleme12 · 30/05/2026 22:30

Listening to this Tina's dad talk about his violence and how 'weak' he thinks this priest is and then listening to this priest talk about his abuse is a bit much after I just watched the last episode of Half Man yesterday

NeedAnyHelpWithThatPaperBag · 31/05/2026 18:56

I saw this advertised and just thought, why?

purpleme12 · 05/06/2026 13:11

Watching episode 5
The mum character is strange
Like she wants to be nice but can't help not being nice

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 07/06/2026 08:23

I went back and binged the rest yesterday.

Spoiler free thoughts.

I still don’t believe in the central relationship.

However … I am even more in awe of Paapa Essiedu than I already was. My God, he can act. And he’s so breathtakingly beautiful.

June Watson as Polly was outstanding.

Won’t say any more as I don’t know which episode you’re all on.

purpleme12 · 07/06/2026 09:00

It's all been shown on Tele

Whataflippincircus · 07/06/2026 09:52

I’ve finished it. It was quite enjoyable and I agree with PP about Paapa Essiedu’s acting and beauty.

When real life steps in for the lovers, I wonder how it will be. We all know that lust tends to be transient and the humdrum life we subsequently fall into doesn’t necessarily bring happiness. A strong attraction doesn’t always mean you are suited to living together.
