We’re introduced to Anna, a nun who is devoted to the church.

Priest David lives his life in a similar fashion.

However, when the pair develop feelings for one another, their budding relationship forces them to re-evaluate their bond with the church.

A series synopsis tell us: “Both are deeply committed to their work in the church and in their community. Neither are expected to fall in love. But, when they do, both are forced to wrestle with what it means for them, their vows, and their relationship with God.

Falling is a witty, moving, contemporary romantic drama that is as honest as it is full of heart.”

6 part drama with an excellent cast.

Leading the way are Paapa Essiedu and Keeley Hawes.

They’ll play devoted duo David and Anna in Falling on Channel 4.
Essiedu has delivered memorable turns in Black Mirror and Gangs of London. He also starred in I May Destroy You, The Capture, and Babies (three of the best BBC dramas (https://www.tvguide.co.uk/articles/best-bbc-dramas-on-bbc-iplayer/)).

Meanwhile, Keeley Hawes is one of the UK’s most bankable actresses. She’ll be familiar to many as Zoe Reynolds in BBC crime series Spooks. She also played DI Lindsay Denton in Line of Duty (https://www.tvguide.co.uk/articles/line-of-duty-series-7-robert-carlyle-cast/). Recently, she portrayed Cassandra Austen, sister to Jane, in BBC One’s 2025 historical drama Miss Austen.
A small ensemble joins the duo, with the following stars part of the cast:
• Jason Watkins (The Game, Dirty Business) as Peter
• Niamh Cusack (The Virtues, Heartbeat) as Francesca
• Rakie Ayola (The Pact, Kaos) as Muriel
• David Dawson (My Policeman, The Last Kingdom) as Phil
• Adrian Scarborough (Gavin and Stacey, The Chelsea Detective) as Francistell

Not just me then

and regulars on telly know I watch pretty much most of things on bbc itv 4&5 at 8/9pm

and enjoy most things

but this.

nope !

If you have given up it must be bad 👎 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

WildMauveReader · 21/05/2026 16:27

Episode 2 is better than episode 1. I actually felt very moved by the Last Rites scene. I also think the David backstory is coming together nicely. I will persevere to the next 2 episodes next week.

Exactly. And I’ve been known To watch some crap / trashy stuff 😂

I don't think it's crap,

I don't think it's crap,

I agree with you. It is quite slow pace but the back stories are now coming into play. I thought Anna was far too polite to her mother but I suppose that after 20 years in a convent more direct language wouldn't come naturally. The issue with the mirrors was very true too. I went to college with someone while cousin had entered a convent and left and found looking at herself in a mirror very difficult.

NotTheOrdinary · 21/05/2026 20:53

I quite like the slower pace of it. I'm not one for gritty violent crime thrillers so it's nice to have something different to watch.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/05/2026 20:56

Glad some of you are enjoying

it’s just a shame as seemed a good unusual plot but just didn’t do it for me

It is really good. It’s slow and lots of angst , but it makes a change from other more gritty dramas and the acting is good. The other bishops and priests are hard as nails . People of the cloth can be though !
Jason Watkins always seems to play such prickly characters.

I liked Jason in MacDonald and Dodds but in this I want to throttle his character.(In a very Christian way of course!) I really like the nurse character who Anna is staying with, her line about 'I don't know about your Bible but mine is quite explicit about helping people in need' did make me chuckle. I know plenty of people from my church that I'd be tempted to say that to.

the80sweregreat · 21/05/2026 21:39

The bishop is a hard watch isn’t he.
The nurse looking after Anna is sweet and caring.
The characters are really well drawn.

mum2jakie · 21/05/2026 22:44

I like the cast but like Blondes I ditched this after the first episode as I found it too dull.

Another one here. The first episode was enough for me .

All I will say is that the second episode put much more flesh on the bones. I suspect that when all 6 episodes have been broadcast, it might have a slightly more nuanced range of viewer opinions on it.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/05/2026 10:11

More flesh in the bones

is that meaning they have sex

I like that it's not yet another thriller or murder series and that it's not something with ridiculous twists.

I'm struggling with episode 1. I was taught by nuns - the way they go about life in the convent, joking with the shopkeeper buying her vegetables, relaxed hugs with the abbess..I don't think the script writer has ever been near a convent or maybe thats the idea - that it is a story about people and the religious aspect is very very secondary.

NotTheOrdinary · 22/05/2026 21:57

It's a love story. I'm a sucker for a love story.

the80sweregreat · 22/05/2026 22:04

Paapa really embodies his part. He really is a fantastic actor.

I've watched the first episode and will watch the rest. I've seen a lot worse than this

CaramacBar · 24/05/2026 13:03

I hope nuns and priests have a summer version of the habit. Looks hot.
Nuns don't normally wear full make up do they? Like Anna was in the first episode?
