I remember going to the cinema to watch this. Such a long list of famous actors. Happy Saturday!

Omg so do I, I think. I will be looking this up.

Nitgel · 10/04/2026 22:16

There was a nice programme with Helen Mirren on before the film last night. Worth watching too.

Watched it so many times and never get tired of it.

Good reminder, haven't watched GP for some time so will dig the DVD out and give it a viewing this weekend.👍

Am currently watching The Killing Fields, absolutely classic & moving film with a terrific score by Mike Oldfield. Hadn't watched it in years but was perusing the DVD shelves this evening and thought it was time to dust it off (so to speak).

Another favourite sitting ready by the DVD player is Love On A Branch line, a real feel good mini-series that I watch every now and again.

Watched Without A Clue in the week (Sherlock Holmes spoof staring Michael Caine & Ben Kingsley), don't think I had even opened the DVD before but I stuck it in the machine and it had me chortling the whole way through. A very underrated and funny film.🙂

Just watched it. SOOO silly.

topcat2026 · 11/04/2026 07:41

Loved it ever since I saw it at the cinema back in 2002. Fans take note - the digital copy you can buy from Apple TV has lots of interesting special features like documentaries and deleted scenes.

One of my favourite films,I've watched it so many times !

Highonmyownsupply · 11/04/2026 08:28

It’s the 40th anniversary of Stand by me. It’s in cinemas, but I think I’ll rent it to enjoy at home.

NerrSnerr · 11/04/2026 08:33

I was in my first year of university and I remember we got free tickets to see this (something to do with applying for a free screening). I remember us all thinking it was like an extended Sunday night tv program.

Me too!

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 18/05/2026 20:36

It’s my favourite film of all time. I watch it regularly.

scalt · 18/05/2026 20:41

“Do you think he’s the murderer?”
”It’s worse that that, he’s an actor.”

”Well, he (Sir William) wasn’t exactly Father Christmas, was he? He was an ‘ard-‘earted, randy old sod.”

me too. I can just rewatch it any time. It’s excellent. Imagine how much that cast would cost to assemble nowadays!

One of my all time favourites, lost count of the amount of times I’ve watched

scalt · 19/05/2026 13:36

It was filmed at my local stately home (although before I lived nearby).

Also, the swearing was put in deliberately, to prevent it from becoming a film that teenagers would go to.

The name "Gosford Park" is not spoken once in the film.

I’ve watched it so many times and yet am suddenly at a loss to remember any swearing!

I have mixed feelings about this film, in some ways I like it a lot but the bit where Emily Watson blabs in defence of Sir William just doesn’t work for me although I know it’s a plot point. But the bit with Stephen Fry and his constable is just jarring. It’s not an amusing and clever change of tone imo it’s stupid and crass. Oh and Alan Bates is a bit cringe.I think it could have worked in a much more subtle way possibly. The rest of it tries and largely succeeds in being very believable rendition of the time.

Having said that I really enjoy watching and watch quite often and love to watch Jeremy Northam. 😍

scalt · 20/05/2026 06:19

@tobee I agree that the Inspector scenes are silly, with the inspector being interrupted every time he tries to introduce himself.

@ConstantlyFuriosa One moment is near the beginning. The young man (I’ve forgotten who) who thinks he won’t get a loan from Sir William says “but I am fucking desperate!”

Oh, yes. Tom Hollander!

ConstantlyFuriosa · 20/05/2026 13:58

I think Alan Bates is great in it and looks proper pissed throughout. I kind of agree re Emily Watson and her unlikely outburst and yes, Stephen Fry’s sudden comedic tone is totally at odds with the rest of the film.

For some reason, I don’t mind, though!

topcat2026 · 20/05/2026 14:26

I never liked the Stephen Fry character in this, it’s like he was in a completely different film compared to everyone else.

I don’t think Elsie’s outburst was at all jarring. She was (in my view) in love with Sit William and although she was the head housemaid, she wasn’t the brightest when it comes to affairs of the heart. We’ve all been there.
