Pilgrimage - new series

I love this series, always so interesting. This is a journey through the NE of England to Lindisfarne. The group seem really lovely, and have interesting takes on religion and spirituality

I saw it too. I love these mini series.

Cardomomle · 06/04/2026 10:31

I think their journey, both literal and spiritual, is going to be interesting. Ashley's adherence and rejection of Orthodox Judaism was something I hope he shares more of.
I really liked Hassan - the experiment with the sheep made me laugh!

Thanks for this, does anyone know if the previous series is available on iplayer?

Yes, I think so.

Did anyone notice the slight power struggle with Ashley and the ladies at the synagogue?

Yes, interesting. He is such an expert on Judaism isn't he? He went to the synagogue 3 times a day, and studied the Jewish scriptures for hours at a time. I suspect he's got a handle on the details!

Just watched this. I thought the synagogue women had a real handle on Ashley (is that his name?). Hermione asked one of them about the menorah and he took over the explanation.

I enjoy these programmes. Loved Ashley Banjo and Hassan laughing about the "go back home" comments and Hassan being on the small boat 😄

Cardomomle · 06/04/2026 22:35

I think Hassan is really funny.

Yes, I agree. I thought those women were great, very clear about their branch of Judaism and also making excellent points about refugees. Showing the Torah from that murdered community was such a moving moment.
I also liked it when Hassan asked if it would be ok for him to pray there and the woman said "I think that would be wonderful".

I thought Ashley Blaker was needlessly rude to the two Reform Synagogue women.

I agree. He ought to have respected them and their work. Fortunately the others did.

I thought that too.

JoanChitty · 07/04/2026 17:43

I do think that someone should have told Ashley Blaker he should have removed his hat in Durham cathedral. Just a lack of respect.

Stephen170 · 08/04/2026 07:33

Ashely Baker insisted that Hassain wear a skull cap (or whatever it is called) in the synagogue yet Baker kept his cap on in Durtham Cathedral. I found Baker, with his awful tattoos to be the most annoying of the pilgrims.

Pabbel · 08/04/2026 07:43

Fascinating series, really enjoying it.

Cardomomle · 08/04/2026 07:50

I really enjoyed that. Very interesting, and all the pilgrims had quite a different take on things, I thought the discussions were insightful.
I liked Hermione's point about the female being taken out as religions organised themselves, to become patriarchal. Good point.

Ashley Blaker seemed better in the final episode, more accepting and integrating better. He referred to struggling with his ND, and wanting to quit, so credit to him that he finished it.
I liked the way that they met female ministers/pastors/rabbis, it added something.
Lovely final scene, but that sea looked cold!

I felt quite sorry for Patsy Kensit she seemed to be on the fringes of the group and a little lonely.

I think both Hermione and Tasha engaged with her, though? It was nice that the others helped her when she struggled with the hill.

Oh yes they did include her. It’s just to me she appeared to be sad.I think she mentioned that she stayed in a lot with her cat. I am a happy introvert however as an actor I thought she’d be more outgoing.

Ah, right. Yes, she said she'd be happy to be a hermit. I think she just wanted to be alone with her cat. She was very different to how I imagined.

They were a lovely group apart from Ashley Blaker, he was so rude and difficult, he really didn’t treat those synagogue ladies well.

suburburban · 09/04/2026 22:22

Enjoyed this series

Wendyhose · 13/04/2026 23:03

I enjoyed it and agree Patsy is quite a sad character . Her inability to come to terms with the death of her mother really seems to have defined her.

I really admire Hermiones poise. I wish I could be like that.
