Hooray!

This is back for another series, starting Thursday.

I just googled very quickly and they set off from Sicily and end the race in northern Mongolia - sounds interesting.

I don't know anything else about it at this point, but thought that we should have a thread ready and waiting.

Wow, it's huge to me

I guess like everything in life things impact people in different ways but there has been countless studies on the impact of the troubles in NI and they are fairly consistent with their findings:

Key Mental Health Impacts
High Prevalence of Trauma: Northern Ireland has some of the highest rates of PTSD in the world, largely due to exposure to violent, conflict-related events.
Lasting Psychological Disorders: Chronic depression, anxiety, and trauma-related mental health issues remain common among those directly affected.
Intergenerational Trauma: The trauma has been passed down, with significant mental health challenges reported in children and young adults today, as noted by the Commission for Victims and Survivors.
Substance Misuse: High rates of alcohol and drug misuse are linked to the lasting impact of the conflict. My colleagues husband died of alcohol abuse and she would consider him a victim of the troubles.
Suicide Rates: Research has linked the long-term impact of the Troubles to high levels of suicide, especially among survivors.

I am not suggesting Andrew struggles with his mental health and that wasn't implied but I would understand how seeing the worst of people and what they can be capable of might effect how you view personal safety and the safety of your loved ones

My dad was an RUC officer & we experienced a lot but I still feel his back story was contrived in how it came across.

I think they’re all pretty genuine this year. For example, last year we had ‘I’m a housewife’ contestant who turned out to be a wealthy, top horse trainer (although she did benefit from the experience greatly). There doesn’t seem to be any hidden narratives this year that people have discovered.

I think this year is the first year that I don’t mind who wins. Also, prize fund is only £20000, so not life changing. Definitely helpful, but not huge.

I agree. I love them all so don’t mind who wins, but feel perhaps Katie & Harrison deserve it most due to winning most legs & not forking out for taxis to do so!

Love that Kush & Margo meet up for coffees!

Dandeliontea123 · 10/05/2026 12:06

Another brilliant episode.
We should get t-shirts printed that say ‘Be More Margo’.

Sorry if my ‘it’s not huge’ comment was flippant. Think I was comparing it to other tv prizes such as BGT which is £250000.

Also, is the £20000 shared so £10000 each?

bookmarket · 10/05/2026 12:21

I like Margo too. She has a genuine interest in people and appears to have a good heart. I bet she'd be a great friend to have in your corner. I can't get on with people who are loud and confident just for attention and take no notice of anyone else. Margo is very calm and listens to Mark so I don't put her in that camp.

Yes, I'd love to 'be more margo' 😊

I like the siblings too and Katie does shine through as a fabulous young woman.

In fact, I really rate RATW because of allowing you g people to be portrayed in such a positive light. These are the types of young men and women I know. Sensitive to others, thoughtful, curious. Not the image the media like to portray. Or the toxic masculinity put out by the manosphere.

bizzey · 10/05/2026 12:42

My tv recording didn't record all of it !
It sort of started at the checkpoint part !

Think the election results overran ?

Anyhow ..was going to leave it , but having read the thread ...I think I will watch it on catch up 😃!!

It sounds like a really good episode.

Definitely should be the name of her podcast, tv series etc. Maybe a ‘Be more Margot’ slot on ‘ This Morning’ or ‘The One Show’, or a ‘Loose Woman’ presenter.

Alison Hammond started from the Big Brother, so why not Margot?

£20,000 would be a huge amount to some people. I think it would greatly benefit the siblings or the lads. It would have been an enormous amount to me at that age.

A TV programme with Margot would be too much like the Jane MacDonald ones. They are awful.

Absolutely this although I think it was the first series that featured a young man who hadn't worked since he left school a few years ago and when he had 'jobs' during the race it became clear why. He improved a lot over the course of the race and benefited greatly.

They have been given a once in a once in a lifetime trip too.

Although of course being filmed is the price. Still fantastic as all the people who apply must love the thought of being on tv. .

A slot on one of those shows would be perfect!

SwedishEdith · 10/05/2026 14:30

Oh, please not on Loose Women.

I agree with the Margo comments about her not being loud for sake of it. She's clearly gregarious but also genuinely curious about people. And at that age where she's past feeling self conscious about how she comes across.

XiCi · 10/05/2026 15:32

I absolutely love Joe and Kush. Their friendship is genuinely heartwarming. So good to see two really lovely young men on our screens when all the focus recently has been on toxic masculinity/manosphere shit. Really hope they win.

SwedishEdith · 10/05/2026 15:34

Jo reminds me of Trent Alexander Arnold.

Yes! Very much so!

TragicMuse · 10/05/2026 16:25

What I think about Margo is that she’s a communicator and she wants to find connections - she’s done it throughout the trip, meeting people and getting to know them. So, on the train, no one speaks English, she thinks how can I connect with these women and starts singing the song she learned a few days before - a song of their part of the world. And it’s like a little magic key because she goes from ignorant westerner to someone who knows one of their songs. For me that was a moment of genius.

RaraRachael · 10/05/2026 16:50

Not everyone wants random people to "connect" with them. I'd have hated it.

WallaceinAnderland · 10/05/2026 17:07

I was on a train in Lisbon when a man got on and started rapping. It was awful. I stuck my fingers in my ears and my nose in my book.

RaraRachael · 10/05/2026 17:18

@WallaceinAnderlandI'd have done the same. I like to read or listen to my own music on a train not be "entertained" by somebody who thinks the place needs livening up.

For me it was cringeworthy. If it isn’t something she’d do on the train in her local town, why did she go to another country and inflict it on people going about their usual day to day business.

Also skeptical that the boys who were on the lowest budget have been given free accommodation and free lifts.

I wish they’d get rid of the home stays. It’s clear the hosts have been told to house, feed and water the contestants in exchange for PR/tourism.

FrankieMcGrath · 09/05/2026 19:19

I agree with all of this. I’m a similar age to Andrew & from Belfast & it definitely seemed a contrived back story.

Yes me too. If anything it makes you more resilient because life is a bit more complicated.

I dont know why you're sceptical. If you are outgoing and genuine and connect with people they usually want to help. I've done a lot of backpacking and have received similar help along the way from a number of people.

Margo is a bit out there but the sing song looked as if it provided a bit of light relief for everyone for a while on a really excruciatingly boring journey. Looked to me that the majority of people on the train enjoyed it.
