@Girliefriendlikespuppies

Once upon a time London Theatreland used to do a Children's week, in August ? and the idea was that several shows would offer really good priced tickets for children ( and their families ) to encourage children to go / be taken to the theatre.

I have no idea if this still happens, but thought I would add to this thread incase anyone else knows up to date info on this....

It’s called Kids Week https://officiallondontheatre.com/kids-week/ sign up here to get news etc and links

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 29/03/2026 15:04

@TofuTuesday

Thank you ! I knew someone would know, it's nice to know it still happens.

so...does London Theatreland still do a ' locals' deal in was it Feb ? in an effort to get Londoners into the theatres in the quiet ( non touristy ) cold months ?

Silverbirchleaf · 29/03/2026 15:10

Kidsweek lasts a month now, I believe.

upinaballoon · 29/03/2026 15:22

Missed most of it. Wish I hadn't. Barbara Dickson was on when I caught sight of it. The Beeb can repeat it if they like.

Oh, maybe I'm talking about the wrong programme. Sorry.

Yes, used to be called GILT (Get Into London Theatre) & is now called New Year Sale.

we first took Dd to Kidsweek when she was 8 years old and finally stopped when she was 17 (would have been 18 but that was 2020).

the very first west End show she saw was Lion King. Her first full time job was working as an usher at Lion King.

Was just going to say the same thing

Comefromaway · 29/03/2026 16:14

She recognised a few performers last night. Some of the cast have been with the show a long time hirger they usually use a mix of west end and tour casts/understudies for these events.

I want to take my dd to see Paddington but the tickets are painfully expensive, even the crap seats are over £100.

If you have a Mastercard sign up for their events thing, Paddington seats come out once a month for front row at a reasonable price.

JustGiveMeReason · 29/03/2026 21:53

Just finished watching this on iPlayer, and have now picked up Show Tunes.

Thanks for the thread, I wouldn't have known either was on, without this thread.

Because I’m a miserable cow and couldn’t cope with the whole filming and singing along. Plus it was full of regulars so I was really awkward going up to get a drink at the onstage bar and didn’t know what we were meant to do.

Please tell me more.
This had caught my eye (before this programme) and I was thinking of booking, but you've made me nervous now.
Is it not a normal show where you sit in the audience and watch the cast ?

SexyFrenchDepression · 30/03/2026 00:02

Loved the show overall.

I recently saw this cast of Miss Saigon, it was a fantastic version, I have seen most of them. Makes me cry every time.

I always forget how powerful 'As long as he needs me'. Makes me really teary, watching 92 yo Shani Wallis the other week on BGT just really made me stop and listen to the song properly, when you watch Oliver as a kid you dont really think about it, so so sad as its so real for many people! Incredible she is still singing like that so many years later.

The Producers is a brilliant show, there is a film of it also which is worth watching.

I am clearly odd as I quite enjoyed the Paddington song, have seen the same songs on most things so nice to see something different, I would like to see it.

JCS is my all time favourite, I go every time it tours or is in the West End. My favourite still remains the arena tour although saw a fantastic touring cast a couple of years ago and the Jesus (was actually understudy and usually played Judas) was incredible, just really natural and superb voice (Luke Street). Not an overactor like a lot of theatre actors. I have tickets for July, we are seeing Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Herod. I was very nervous Sam Ryder wouldn't be able to act the song but I thought he did brilliantly, esp given that the cameras are up close so you can't get away with anything.

I love most musicals but Wicked is definitely not my favourite. I like a couple of the songs but not massively fussed.

TofuTuesday · 31/03/2026 13:23

@JustGiveMeReason im sure you will love it, it is very popular with a huge fan base and lots of regulars.
i bought tokens to go up and buy beer at the ‘pub’ on stage but then didn’t know what to do. The singers are up there too, but none approached us or said hello so we sort of awkwardly took our photo with one and then left. Not everyone goes up at all. They pick a couple of people to go up mid show but I think that you could easily refuse. The ‘rules’ I didn’t see in advance are you can take photos and singalong, which I found really stressful as we had a group in front who knew a cast member so we watched through their phones a lot of the time which was really distracting.

JustGiveMeReason · 31/03/2026 20:56

Thanks @TofuTuesday
That's really helpful to know.
Doen't encourage me to go and see it Grin

I saw choir of man and hated it. Like this though.

I hated Choir of Man too. The singing bits were ok but I hated all the crap they spoken between - all this over the top sentimental type bollocks that just felt really fake.

Oh thank goodness it’s so popular I feel like a freak disliking it

I’ve just looked at the prices for JCS over summer - top price tickets for the dates I looked at are £395 😱

I had that too! Prices for three people, including a disabled discount, was over £1400!! Can’t go anywhere expect the stalls because of Access. Crazy money. I looked and the opera at Glyndebourne is cheaper!

My favourite song.
It's a Hard Knock Life.
Love Annie 🥰

Me too. In fact, watching La Voix and all the kids prompted me to book tickets to the show. Annie the Musical is touring and was one of my favourite films growing up. Love the remake and have both soundtracks too ❤️

I saw the stage show last year (or year before?).
I had been waiting since I first saw the film in 1982 to see a stage version 😂
When we booked the tickets it was scheduled for Paul O'Grady to be Miss Hannigan but sadly he passed away before I got to see him 🙁
I think he would have been so good.
