A woman of substance Was originally aired 41 years ago and remains channel 4 highest rated program with 13.8 million people tuning in to the rags to riches story of by BARBARA Taylor Bradford

this drama eight episodes - two a week for four weeks

This new adaptation stars as the older EMMA who heads up a business empire we discover as she stepped back through the decades to meet her younger self that she started out of a maid in a big Yorkshire house

This is a story to climb from poverty to great wealth

I don’t think I’ve ever read any of her books so should be interesting if any good

It's very good. It's on streaming too.

Yourangduckie · 07/03/2026 01:38

One of my favourite series ever it's so good. watch it a few times a year.

musicalfrog · 07/03/2026 03:49

Never saw the original, is it available to watch anywhere please?

Tezza1 · 07/03/2026 04:34

I thought Jenny Seagrove was excellent and very lovely and appealing as young Emma Harte. I was always a bit surprised she didn't have a more high profile career, as she was charming in things like the delightful and gentle "Coming Home" probably now best remembered for Mark Knopfler's theme.

i think I will have to go and do a bit of JS research.
(Sorry too many twee adjectives)

I’m so excited about this. Read it as a teen (+ sequels) and I’ve come back to it as a comfort read again and again. Love the original series too.

NewAgeNewMe · 07/03/2026 07:37

Loved this first time around. Harrods’ was the Hartes Knightsbridge store.

I am looking forward to it but prefer the second book( and mini series) to the first book. Nigel havers!

NewAgeNewMe · 07/03/2026 10:11

It’s excellent @Blondeshavemorefun
the acting is superb from Deborah Kerr and Jenny Seagrove. Nuanced. I’m not sure it can be beaten tbh.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/03/2026 10:28

I think for those who have seen the original this may not be so good for them

was the original a series

Yourangduckie · 07/03/2026 12:06

Oh is this a remake? If so I will still give it a try.

I've only ever watched the original as film length the first and second one. The first one is about Emma's life younger and the second one as she's older. Liam Neeson is superb in both.

Edited to add. Just noticed you had mentioned it's a remake @Blondeshavemorefun oh how exciting!

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/03/2026 12:43

Yes remade after 41yrs so sure will be different

Really looking forward to watching a updated version. Will watch with a open mind.

Umanresources · 07/03/2026 13:06

Oh my goodness I watched the original one with Jenny Seagrove and Deborah Kerr. 41 years ago? Surely I’m not that old, but I did enjoy it and read the book (s) as well. I’m looking forward to this series as well.

NewAgeNewMe · 07/03/2026 13:08

You and me both @Umanresources

It was repeated frequently so you wouldn't necessarily havevyo be oldvenough to watch when originally broadcast. I preferred the sequel 'To hold the dream ' Very big name cast, Jenny Seagrove did go on to do Judge John Deed. I also sorted her playing a nun in a repeat episode of Peak Practice. It will be very interesting to see Brenda Blythen's interpretation of Emma Harte. Big contrast to Vera!

NewAgeNewMe · 07/03/2026 16:39

I watched when it first came out.

She's been more active on the theatre circuit I think. And has done a couple of films recently too. I absolutely loved her in Judge John Deed.

Hepzibar · 07/03/2026 22:03

Read the books and I remember watching the original TV series. Never took to Jenny Seagrove as young Emma, bit wooden (and had played same character in every thing else she’s been in) Liam Neesom was Blackie? Neither of them fit my image from the books but still loved it

Yourangduckie · 07/03/2026 22:05

Yeah, that's right Liam was Blackie he was so good I thought. I've never seen the woman who plays young Emma in anything else.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/03/2026 22:56

I don’t know whether to try and watch th old one- or it might tarnish my view on this one

Lynley do example. I never saw the old version and really enjoyed the new

many who watched the old don’t enjoy the new

Loved the book, which was a must read when first out, and although Jenny Seagrove not the greatest actress, the rest of the cast (especially Liam Neeson, Deborah Kerr, Barry Bostwick) carried the original series, which is such a cracking story it made great viewing. Be interesting to see the new version and the trailer looks like a harder edge to the story. I wonder if they'll go on to remake the follow up series, based on the further books in the series, and I suppose it depends how this one does.
