New series 6 which is mean to be ace !!

was shown originally in Ireland last year and now bbc have it

Enter The Walsh Sisters, which has been adapted from several of Marian Keyes' beloved novels and introduces us to the dysfunctional but deeply loveable Walsh family.

Featuring five sisters, a devout mother and a bemused father, every family will find something to relate to in the chaos that surrounds them.

Billed as a "comedy about serious things — a pacy, brutally honest and uncompromisingly funny exposé of the realities of being an Irish sister", we meet the five sisters as they’re drifting through adulthood in Dublin and supporting each other as they cope with heartbreak, grief, addiction and parenthood.

And if it's as good as Marian's books, it's going to be a truly outstanding piece of TV.

The six-part series is part based on two of Marian Keyes’ novels, Rachel’s Holiday and Anybody Out There and introduces us to a group of five loveable but chaotic sisters living in Dublin - Anna (Louisa Harland), Rachel (Caroline Menton), Maggie (Stefanie Preissner), Claire (Danielle Galligan) and Helen (Máiréad Tyers) – as they navigate the peaks and troughs of their late 20s and 30s.

It's a sisterhood full of in-jokes, hand-me-down resentments and more than a few old wounds.

But their DNA, history and shared love of power ballads keep the Walsh sisters together in the face of heartbreak, grief, addiction and parenthood.

The cast of The Walsh Sisters includes:
• Louisa Harland (Derry Girls, Renegade Nell) as Anna
• Caroline Menton (Oddity) as Rachel
• Danielle Galligan (Kin, Shadow and Bone)

•	Máiréad Tyers (My Lady Jane, Belfast) as Helen
•	Stefanie Preissner (How to Adult) as Maggie
•	Aidan Quinn (Legends of the Fall) as Jack ‘Daddy’ Walsh
•	Carrie Crowley (Hope Street) as Mammy Walsh
•	Debi Mazar (Younger) as Chaquie
•	Gina Moxley (The Patient Gloria, Here Before) as Josephine
•	Jay Duffy (Wheel of Time, Northern Lights) as Luke Costello
•	Samuel Anderson (Amandaland (<a class="break-all" href="https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/lifestyle/a69662742/jennifer-saunders-amandaland-christmas-special/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/lifestyle/a69662742/jennifer-saunders-amandaland-christmas-special/))</a> as Aidan

“She’s fairly shabby”: Jennifer Saunders shares “surprise” details of her role in Amandaland Christmas Special

It’s not quite the Ab Fab reunion we were expecting…

Nope I couldn’t manage to finish it. If I ever read the books again I fear this tv show will ruin them for me. Some books just shouldn’t be made into tv. Shopaholic being another that was a travesty.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 21/02/2026 22:31

Mammy walsh is a bit like brenda fricker when she was in casualty

Just out of interest, and without spoilers, how have people who've read the books envisioned Mammy? I'm sure I've read at least one of the Walsh ones but I really can't remember which!

For me, Mammy Walsh is a sort of hybrid of Mrs Doyle from Father Ted, and Mrs McCarthy from Father Brown

Forestfire12345 · 21/02/2026 22:32

Absolutely dire . Won't watch again

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/02/2026 22:32

It come to me. Hope Street and Assumpta

Mammy Walsh to me was a bit like one of the Nolans crossed with Dana circa 1995 ....a kind of no-BS but down to earth vibe but this TV version seems a bit glam and stern so far. (but I have been up a million times with a toddler with a cold so I might have missed something vital)

Bigearringsbigsmile · 21/02/2026 22:47

Rachel supposed to be 5' 9
And anna and helen are about 5 foot and petite and delicate looking. None of the characters looked right. The culling of the friendships and the new york setting is awful.
The mangling of the timelines is terrible .
The mingling of the stories awful.

PrincessScarlett · 21/02/2026 22:54

Luke Costello is meant to wear leathers not knitwear and gingham boxers.

I don't like that it's so modern. Daddy Walsh using modern slang was so wrong.

MadisonMarieParksValetta · 21/02/2026 22:59

These are two of my fav books. I've read both many many times. I will not watch this because they have got the actors completely wrong. Anna especially. Maura Higgins would have been a perfect Anna.

Agree. There was no humour. And Helen is a real force of nature, takes no nonsense. Mammy totally wrong and that was no Luke Costello! He’s meant to be tall, dark and HOT!

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 21/02/2026 23:16

I'm halfway through episode 2, it's just so unfunny so far. Disappointing as Rachel's Holiday was a cracking read.

MadamWhippy · 21/02/2026 23:16

The actress playing Mammy Walsh is actually a great actress - Carrie Crowley - she was in An Cailín Ciúin and lots of Irish TV. However the character is completely wrong. The series lacks the humour and warmth of the books.

halftermhalfawake · 21/02/2026 23:19

I am not sure I will continue, I think it might ruin the books for me...the sisters didn't seem to really like each other in the TV version iyswim

Nothing against Carrie Crowley it's just not how I saw Mammy Walsh, and tbf none of the sisters are really as I saw them, also agree that Luke isn't right :(

purpleme12 · 21/02/2026 23:43

I'm loving the Samantha Mumba song!

purpleme12 · 22/02/2026 00:20

I'm going to enjoy it as a thing separate to the books

I think it helps that it's been so long since I read the books.

I enjoyed it for what it was. I’ve still 5 and 6 to watch. It was a good viewing on a Saturday night with a bottle of Prosecco (if that helps shy of you enjoy it more 🤣).

I haven’t read the books in probably 20 years but remember loving them and her other books. Inspired to go and reread them now. I loved the Walsh sisters however I didn’t remember the details of the books and suspect if I had I’d have found the tv show a hard watch.

the80sweregreat · 22/02/2026 01:59

Aiden’s dodgy accent was so cringy..
I don’t like this authors books much , don’t understand tne hype..I did read Rachel’s holiday over 20 years ago and wasn’t that impressed , this tv show seems dire..

Latenightreader · 22/02/2026 02:00

I got about a third of the way through episode one before giving up. I'd been really looking forward to it. I think they got Maggie spot on, although Garv should have been better looking. I liked Mr Walsh, and I liked Anna and Rachel together, but I wish they'd stuck more to the book timeline so Rachel was the catalist for Anna pulling herself together rather than trying to mash storylines which they seem to be doing. Also wish they'd kept the New York setting. Helen seemed a bit less self centred in the show too.

Having said that, I'll probably keep going!

Passwordsaremynemesis · 22/02/2026 04:24

I loved the books, but couldn’t get past the first episode of this. Mammy Walsh was just too wrong!

ChessieFL · 22/02/2026 05:59

I’ve watched the first two episodes and after expecting to hate it (because I love the books so much) I actually enjoyed it, but as a programme in its own right rather than a faithful adaptation of the books.

What I think they got right (or pretty much there): Rachel, Claire, Mr Walsh

On the fence about: Helen (character is played well but just doesn’t look right for Helen), Aidan (love Samuel Anderson but very off putting hearing him with an American accent even though that’s right for the character!).

What I didn’t like: Anna (actress doesn’t look right and character not right, plus don’t like how they’ve changed the first part of her story), Maggie (actress looks about 10 years older than all the other sisters, character was about right though), Luke (looks wrong, character wrong), Mammy Walsh (just wrong. As a pp said she should look like Brenda Fricker). And the counsellor in The Cloisters has a very annoying slow way of speaking.

I also think it’s a shame they’ve dropped the friends (I was looking forward to Bridget!) and the New York setting.

However, despite listing lots of ways it’s departing me from the books I did like it and will keep watching.

deeahgwitch · 22/02/2026 08:07

I agree with you re the therapist @ChessieFLand Mrs Walsh is just wrong- she’s not an Irish Mammy.
Carrie Crowley is a very good actress so I presume it was the director’s very odd choice to play her as a total b*tch.
I’d love to know Marian’s real thoughts on the adaptation.

Yes totally agree ,and in .my mind Luke Costello was like a young Jon Bon Jovi, no offence to the actor who played him but hes nothing like i imagined
Neither is Aiden ,I love the actors who plays him always found him very attractive but hes not right for the role imo.

Took me ages to work out the actor because of the American accent 😂
