This is Kate Winslet’s directing debut and she stars, along with a host of other famous names.

Who has watched it and what did you think?

I thought it was excellent, even if a little predictable. I also cried my eyes out and thy have been meaning ever since.

I couldn’t get into it and switched off after 20 min.

hattie43 · 26/12/2025 20:00

I saw it last night . It was an effort to get through it tbh . A great cast but wasted imo

CraftandGlamour · 26/12/2025 20:06

Great cast but so, so slow. It had its moments but I thought it was very predictable and felt lacking in emotional depth considering the subject matter. That said, it was written by KW's young son so impressive for his age but it wouldn't have got made if he wasn't who he is.

Slovenlyandblubbing · 26/12/2025 20:11

Oh, just me that really enjoyed it then 🤣

I found it poignant , but I agree it dragged a bit at times and I’m sure that many have had to endure hospitals that were not as lovely as this one was.
I love Toni Collette in anything and she didn’t disappoint and Helen Mirran and Timothy spall were very good. How they made her look so frail was clever.

Victoriaqueen · 27/12/2025 17:34

I plan to watch this later tonight. I'll come back with my view. 🙂

the80sweregreat · 27/12/2025 17:34

It looks like it’s another ‘ nepo baby’ getting the limelight though. I can imagine it’s hard if your not connected ‘ to get anything commissioned these days
I know it’s how it is, but it must be difficult for ordinary writers and producers to get on without this leg up.
I did find it sad though and it had some nice moments.

MercyChant66 · 27/12/2025 17:54

I actually enjoyed it but, having just watched The Family Stone, it made me ponder on how many films are about dying or missing Mums at Christmas - no-one has made a film about a dying or missing Dad, as far as I know. I don't think Planes, Trains and Automobiles counts although the returning father in Little Women is a great moment...

the80sweregreat · 27/12/2025 17:59

I find that people often miss their dads more than their mums to be honest ( my dh does as he was a decent kind man and his mum wasn’t as much)
The hospital was very quiet too. I did wonder if it was meant to be a private one , but I don’t think they were that well off!
Was Connor with the nurse at the end or just stayed friends? It annoyed me that he didn’t check the taps were turned off at the start : it’s a thing with me to check they are off before I go out! He was living there and seemed really useless.

the80sweregreat · 27/12/2025 18:08

The whole juggling act of work and elderly parents and young children around too was well done.
It’s all too familiar isn’t it.

I think this is why it hit me hard. Too close to the bone.

I did think it had some good points to make. How hard it is for starters, let alone the emotion of it all and dealing with difficult relatives!

Victoriaqueen · 28/12/2025 10:37

I've now watched it from start to finish. I agree with many comments in the above posts and understand what the writer has attempted to do but whatever I may have been expecting it certainly wasn't what I saw. Far too many mini dramas which bordered on the boring (sorry to say that but am being honest). Yes life goes on outside of the bedside vigil and family feuds needed highlighting (apparently) but it seemed to go on far longer than the two hours and I felt a tiny bit ashamed in wishing it would end.

Timothy Spall singing in the pub was cringe and the end scene letting us know that the son and nurse got it together was saying hey something good came of June's death. Again the cringe for me. The sisters feud then friendship too of course 🙄

I give it 7/10

This. I will not watch it for this reason as just not fair for other young writers.

LaurieFairyCake · 29/12/2025 20:14

Great cast, beautiful acting. Very normal life and death.

I think if you treat it like a very average life and death and don’t expect dramatics you’re onto a winner.

Reminded me of ‘any human heart’. We watched it today and thought it was just like the death we went through a couple of years ago with all the family dynamics.

BlueBlueCowWondering · 29/12/2025 20:20

I'm afraid I was unmoved. It was so unrealistic in the hospital scenes (no other patients/ hospital staff, so easy to park every time 🙄, decorating a hospital room with so much stuff)
Agree that the actors were wasted in it.

Edited to say:

But I really wanted to like it!

the80sweregreat · 29/12/2025 20:24

They always park outside places in these films.
Usually it’s miles away with annoying parking apps and costs a fortune.

TheNameWasOnceChosen · 29/12/2025 20:52

I like it. Didn't live it but it was nice to watch.

fruitypancake · 29/12/2025 21:09

I found it slow but agree is poignant and emotional in places

yummychocolate · 29/12/2025 22:02

I enjoyed it and cried like a baby. I think if you have experienced a similar situation, you might have more of a connection to the film.

Pacificsunshine · 29/12/2025 22:19

My husband and I watched it last night. We thought it was poignant in an ordinary way. The acting was very good.

eurotravel · 30/12/2025 00:24

I enjoyed. I’ve been on that journey with siblings and whilst extremely dramatised & not really realistic so much rang true.

Oneforallandallforone · 30/12/2025 00:33

I liked it. for the most part The nativity play at the end was too long and I fast forwarded through it quite thankful it wasn't on in a cinema.

I usually cry at films with a dying theme but didn't during this film so it didn't run deep enough.

The dynamics of the sister's relationships was interesting for me although a bit of a let down when it came to the scene in the corridor when it was being discussed.

The relationships theme was good and I'd have liked it to go to the next level.

I was really looking forward to seeing this film. I like the actors and am a big fan of Kate Winslet. It just didn't run deep enough for me. But perhaps being aimed at the Christmas film market meant it was never going to?

moana35 · 31/12/2025 12:47

I loved it. I haven't cried at a film for ages. I found it so realistic with the chaos of family life and the fact they weren't all glamourous. The acting was brilliant and the loved the little nuances of real life that were shown by just very quickly just to add to the reality of it all. It was so realistic that it was more like a portrayal of a real family. I really love deeply emotional family dramas though so it was just up my street.

ConnieHeart · 31/12/2025 13:08

It was quite good, fairly predictable & unrealistic at times, especially with the nativity at the end. I think HM's character had the right idea passing away before the end of it 🤣
