Technically 3 but we weren't allowed to watch ITV because it was common.

Same here, my mum wouldn't let us watch ITV.
I remember when channel 4 launched and it was really good. Was allowed to watch it!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/12/2025 22:01

3, although we didn’t have a tv for a while.

We got sent home early from netball practice when I was 11 or 12 to watch Channel 4 launch. Our reception waa rubbish.

This 😕😳

OldBeyondMyYears · 07/12/2025 22:03

3…BBC1, BBC2 and ITV. I can still remember seeing colour TV for the first time stood outside Rumbelows shop window! We didn’t get a colour set until 1972 (the year my sister was born). It was so exciting! 😂

BrickBiscuit · 07/12/2025 22:04

Two. On budget day, they moved BBC1 children's programmes to BBC2. We couldn't watch, as you needed 625 lines and we only had 405. If someone asked you round for tea the first question would often be 'Have you got colour?'

RampantIvy · 07/12/2025 22:05

Same here @Pinkbox

MotherTuckinGenius · 07/12/2025 22:06

Two full time BBC1 and ITV I still remember the national anthem being played when bbc1 shut down at around 11pm every night. BBC2 was a part time channel which played the test card showing the photo of the blonde haired girl with the balloons and clown doll much of the time.

3, and it was black and white tv.

I remember when Changel 4 launched. It was huge news. It started on November 2nd (year?) and the first programme was Countdown.

I remember this very well…it was my 18th birthday and we watched the launch with party poppers 😂

We're so old! 😆 🤣

I know. One minute we are bright young things watching the launch of an exciting new TV channel, the next...

Velveletteslonleylonelygirlami · 07/12/2025 22:08

3 then chnl 4 launch when I was 16or17 iirc

JessyCarr · 07/12/2025 22:08

UntiI I was 7 - zero, in a country where there was no TV. Then one. Then (different country) zero due to war, until age 10 when I went to an English boarding school and the TV was switched on once a week for Top of the Pops!

ultracynic · 07/12/2025 22:10

Three, until Ch4 launched in 1982 then Ch5 in 1997.

I love that everyone watched the same programs at the same time back then. We had so much to talk about every morning at school.

YesItsMe44 · 07/12/2025 22:11

My formative years were in Alaska (60s-70s) PBS (Public Broadcasting Corp) in the morning and Nbc from Noon on. If you had money you could get cable, but didn't know anyone who had it.

When I was very young (in the 80s) we had 1 channel.

We had a black & white tv.
Some nights there were movies on tv, other nights there weren’t and the programme would end early after the news.
We had 10- 15 mins of rubbish cartoons every evening. They were in Russian and didn’t have subtitles/ weren’t dubbed so we just watched the images and tried to figure out what was being said. Whenever the cartoons came on, all the kids playing outside would scatter in seconds, running inside to watch tv.
Kids these days are so lucky.

Correction, we didn’t have cartoons every day, I remember it wrong. I just found an old tv programme online from when I was 5 years old. It reads:
7:30pm - news, followed by some programme about how amazing our president was, followed by news. Tv off at 10pm. So 2.5 hours of propaganda.

But that was during the week. At the weekend we had 2 hours of tv in the afternoon followed by 4 hours in the evening. Usually folk music, propaganda, and some cheap movie bought from our communist neighbours. Yay! 🤣

JudgeBread · 07/12/2025 22:13

Four, five if we tilted the aerial in exactly the right way but it was always fuzzy

FrangipaniBlue · 07/12/2025 22:14

purpleme12 · 07/12/2025 20:28

Four. I definitely remember when channel 5 was launched!

Same!

emmetgirl · 07/12/2025 22:15

I’m pretty old. There were 3 and then Ch4 started when I was about 16.

EverardDeTroyes · 07/12/2025 22:16

I'm another one who technically had 3 but was only allowed to watch 2. ITV was very frowned upon, apart from Upstairs Downstairs, for some reason.

gamerchick · 07/12/2025 22:17
  1. I remember channel 4 coming and then channel 5.

I still have our first telly.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 07/12/2025 22:18

3 then 4.

Helplessandheartbroke · 07/12/2025 22:58

purpleme12 · 07/12/2025 20:28

Four. I definitely remember when channel 5 was launched!

Me too! Has a big fuzzy 5 in the corner! Used to play bamboozle on tele text with my df on a Friday!

ilovepixie · 07/12/2025 23:03

3 until I was a teenager then 4.

InfoSecInTheCity · 07/12/2025 23:07

4, then in 1997 when I was 14 channel 5 was launched, it was very exciting at the time 😂
