If HIGNFY isn’t funny any more, what is its function?

Is it to remind us of a happier time when it did used to be funny. And are we just not ready to let that go?

Who said it wasn't funny?

Angstinmyspanx · 06/12/2025 20:31

Do you think it’s funny? I watch it with affection, but regularly feel awkward about how sluggish it has become.

I agree. Smug champagne socialists getting unfunnier with every episode.

khfippjjj · 06/12/2025 20:32

I think it’s funny still 🤷‍♀️ you must realise comedy is subjective?

soupforbrains · 06/12/2025 20:33

When something is satirical people usually find it either funny or not depending on which ‘side’ is being targeted.

I like HIGNFY and I still find it funny.

Angstinmyspanx · 06/12/2025 20:33

It used to be quite edgy. I can see why they don’t bother any more. It is nostalgia tv.

I think it is funny.

MinnieCauldwell · 06/12/2025 20:33

Yes, watching out of habitat. Only covers news stories that suit their agenda. I think I will knock it on the head now.

MidnightPatrol · 06/12/2025 20:35

I think the format is just a bit tired after so many years

Angstinmyspanx · 06/12/2025 20:35

The bar is quite low, then, isn’t it, for humour?

Everyone used to watch HIGNFY, whatever their political inclination. It used to feel important.

Still laughing. And letching at Hannah Fry Blush

Startoftheyear2025 · 06/12/2025 20:35

I find it funny

SwedishEdith · 06/12/2025 20:35

I still find it funny. Not every second of every episode but still one of the programmes I make a point of watching. You're thread title suggests your opinion is fact. There was another thread recently about HIGNFY and plenty of people said they still watched it.

notsurewherenotsurewhy · 06/12/2025 20:36

I think i laugh out loud less frequently than I maybe did 20 years ago, but it's still one of the few things I actually bother watching, and I'd miss it if they got rid. I still usually like Ian Hislop's soapbox moments too.

Happyher · 06/12/2025 20:37

I still think it’s funny. I’m a Labour voter and don’t like the fact that the jokes have switched to Labour but funny is funny and I can take it on the chin now the Labour government is the main target. That’s the price of being in government.

Ihadalittletime · 06/12/2025 20:38

I still watch it and enjoy it but it is slightly tired. I have put it down to the team captains and guests getting older and not being as quick-witted as they were.

How are you defining “edgy”?

Angstinmyspanx · 06/12/2025 20:39

I suspect it has a function that is nothing to do with humour - that is what my title is about. Its continuity is so very reassuring. Yes, I suppose I do think it not being funny is a fact.

And it isn’t very funny, and the guests look hugely relieved when they get a laugh. Whether they can pull that off is the most complelling thing about it.

She is my total girl crush and definitely makes me question my sexuality 😂

Turnerskies · 06/12/2025 20:41

I still find it quite funny. Richard Coles was good yesterday. There's nothing else on television that I find funny at all.

“It isn’t very funny” says who? Do you think your opinion is more important than other people’s? I’m sure it’ll be cut when it stops drawing in viewers. I enjoy political satire, I don’t watch it for “nostalgia”.

OnTheNiceishList · 06/12/2025 20:42

It’s still quite funny, but my go to laugh my head off is still 8 Out of 20 Cats Does Countdown.

IBorAlevels · 06/12/2025 20:43

Someone has been very upset by HIGNFY this week - multiple threads started on here about how crap it is etc. I keep forgetting to catch up, so thanks for the reminder to watch on iplayer. 😘

Well, all I can think of at this point is Ian being horrid to Paula Yates and when Jeffrey Archer was replaced with a tub of lard.

Was it Jeffrey Archer?

And when Christine Hamilton and Ian Hamilton were on it together, and another time when she called Angus Deayton a disgrace.

And the elephant trap of Boris Johnson being questioned about helping get a journalist beaten up.

"Yes, I suppose I do think it not being funny is a fact."

How can "suppose" and "think" relate to something also being "a fact".
