Starring Lola Petticrew, recently in Trespasses, this is also set during the Troubles in NI, but more a crime, political series.

Haven't seen any reviews so have no idea whether it is worth watching or not!

I watched this on Disney and its absolutely brilliant, set during the troubles in the 1970's in Belfast, very realistic and brutel at times, well worth the watch

Same, highly recommend. I found myself reading up about it for weeks afterwards, it really stayed with me.

Thanks. I was intending to watch because it looked really interesting and remember that period of time. And discussions about women's participation. So glad it is recommended.

Was concerned to see written by an American (some of whose grasp of history can be a bit .... ) but apparently also an investigative journalist.

Brutal is the right word. It was tough to watch at times. Would still really recommend it though.

Sidebeforeself · 01/12/2025 17:26

Ive seen this and it was amazing. One of the best dramas Ive seen fr a long time.

Endofyear · 01/12/2025 17:35

I read the book by Patrick Radden Keefe and it is brilliant. Not sure how it will translate into a drama but will watch and see!

EuroTour · 01/12/2025 17:44

It's a tough watch but one of the best things I've seen. I read the book after, also amazing.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 01/12/2025 17:46

The book is brilliant @IwantToRetire this is fantastic also. I watched it on Disney well worth it

IwantToRetire · 01/12/2025 18:30

Thanks, sounds like something to look forward to.

Cant work out if all episodes will be available, as I like to binge watch because my memory is so bad.

But may be to go back to week by week.

And also interested as have only recently finished watching Trespasses.

Haven't seen this, but read the book. Should point out it was heavily influenced by "Voices From the Grave" by Ed Moloney. Moloney wasn't happy about this! The earlier book contains the original interviews with Brendan Hughes, which Keefe later used for his own book.

When you are done with this watch the doc on prime called I Delours

Lovewine1975 · 02/12/2025 11:56

@Member984815 thank you I will be watching that!

CoastalCalm · 02/12/2025 11:59

I honestly thought it was meh when I watched it , seemed to me to focus too little on the impact of the bombs and almost glamourised the terrorism

Yes I gave up half way through the first episode as if seemed to be an ira promo. Does it get more balanced or does Gerry Adams carry on being a bit of a hero?

I was not engaged at all by the first episode. And I was expecting to.

I will watch the second episode because I have assumed, perhaps wrongly, that this story is as much about being young and starry eyed, and then find out along you cant give up on thinking for yourself and allowing someone else to take decisions for you.

(Partly also dont think even though it is year's later that any UK tv channel would show a programme that only presented history from the view point of the IRA. Although to understand history you have to acknowledge that people's view of life will be different to yours because of their experiences.)

An incredible piece of work. Hard to watch plenty of times. Was glad to see the complexity not brushed over as it usually is, where everyone fits into neat round holes. Outstanding.

IwantToRetire · 03/12/2025 17:03

I have to say having now watched series 2 & 3 am really underwhelmed.

Have seen much better series. The 2 female leads are just absurd.

They have been given no dialogue to make them even remotely engaged with what is happening other than really superficial I want to be part of it.

I have no doubt, as often happens that young people often get caught up in events for the excitement (eg recent riots in the UK).

The silent sister always popping up at the last minute with heavy armoury while the more chatty one dithers.

And not helped by Maxine Peake's quirky performance.

And it doesn't help that at the end of each episode despite having Gerry Adams as a main character this bizarre statement about saying he was never involved.

Which if true means all of this so called personal testimony is complete BS!

Maybe its because it is made by Americans.

Quite honestly the scary bits aren't that scary, and the politics are just sort of dumb.

"Oh hold on a moment you mean he served in Kenya, didn't they have an uprising."

You might think the politics dumb (and the denials of JA bizarre), but this is a true story of Northern Ireland. The Jean McConville story was very prominent in the press in recent times. Sorry you found the uprising of the catholic underclass in Northern Ireland to be some young people getting caught up in a bit of excitement. Jesus Wept.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 03/12/2025 18:37

@IwantToRetirei would strongly recommend the book if you want a properly in depth look at the story

You misunderstand.

I am saying this series fails the real issues.

Not that the issue isn't important.

I am no great writer but cant imagine how you thought that's what I am saying.

And of course I know about Jean McConville. This is what I mean.

Many of us even if not in NI are aware of this and other tragedies.

And all we get is a young woman pursing her lips when it is mentioned.

I am saying that the producers are dumb.

There have been a number of series and documentaries over the decades so this fairly facile representation seems really odd.
