Is anyone watching this?

Not really cosy Sunday evening viewing, but very interesting.

@honeylulu We had a debt but we should not have had a citizen captured and detained. Had normal relations been maintained and, if we could have had open diplomatic channels with Iran after the revolution, there would not have been such a prolonged argument over tanks and money. We were not any longer able to deal with Iran. They had no excuse for what they did to NZR.

I agree. As I said, neither government behaved well and Nazanin was an innocent victim of that.
I don't think it's right that the UK couldn't pay the debt because relations hadn't been maintained. It has been court ordered and paid into the high court in 2002. Just not released.

Those on the thread who believe she was a spy: can you tell us why? Do you have any evidence or do you just have a niggly feeling about her? I remember how she got monstered by the Daily Mail and others in the media for being 'ungrateful' because she criticised some of the handling by our Govt. (Unpleasantly similar to how Zelensky got monstered by Trump and Vance for not performing gratitude sufficiently. ) Perhaps this has influenced those who still see her as a bit of a wrong 'un.

@honeylulu thsts what I was wondering re ever seeing her parents again - are they still in Iran?

Monty27 · 28/11/2025 03:42

Have the parent's travel documents been confiscated?

I don't think so.

I started watching episode 2
What is it that she flushes down the toilet at the airport?

I assumed maybe erroneously that whilst in solidarity confinement she’d been given pen and paper by either the prison guards (a couple who seemed to have a couple of grams of humanity) or one of the other prisoners and that she wasn’t meant to have it and that she didn’t want anyone to get into trouble.

Sorry I was speculating. I meant that they would probably be to afraid to travel to the UK after what happened to Nazanin, particularly if Iran is persisting with the line that she is/was a spy/activist. Nazanin isn't going to want to risk going to Iran again either.

I hope I'm wrong and she will somehow see them again.

Yes I’d assume both too but I haven’t found anywhere that says for certain either although have tried searching . Specifically I can’t see her parents wanted to risk their final years of life in prison

It is almost the most harrowing programme I have ever seen, I feel almost traumatised from just watching it, and only watched two episodes so far.

Episode 3 is a bit more uplifting imho. Although I can't believe the political wing of Evin prison is as open and homely as they made out in the programme tbh!

I don't see the consulate offering the parents assistance to travel. It's crushing to imagine being separated from their dd for ever.
Heartbreaking.

OhDear111 · 29/11/2025 22:19

@honeylulu It is correct about the money because of sanctions and no contact. We removed the mechanisms to resolve the dispute and so did Iran. The USA involved too. The Guardian has full details. It became very complex but we also relied on our court findings in respect of the dispute, which was contrary to the international court. It just was not black and white.

@oldtiredcyclist thanks for sharing!

purpleme12 · 03/12/2025 19:20

I didn't know she had to sign that confession at the end

purpleme12 · 03/12/2025 19:26

Really well done series

Really sad.
What all of them have been through
I cried at the end
I really hope they're doing ok

Redburnett · 04/12/2025 08:35

I watched the documentary last night. It was fascinating and horrifying. It gave a great insight into the politics. It featured others who had also been taken hostage by the Iranian regime. That poor woman must be so damaged by her experience. I'm a bit surprised there hasn't been more interest on MN given the case concerned a mother and baby. And the husband does not look well, those hunger strikes probably damaged his health.
Baffled as to why the English couple currently held in Iran ever took the risk of going there.
