Is anyone watching this?

Not really cosy Sunday evening viewing, but very interesting.

I watched the series in 1 day. It was well made/ told. As sad as it was I think she was a spy or at least recruited specifically for the trip to Iran.

Pollqueen · 25/11/2025 20:25

There's a lot of ignorance on this thread but, I have a few Iranian friends from my voluntary esol days. And all of them, without exception, believe Nazanin was a spy. It's infuriating

Nazanin was not a spy, she was held hostage by the Iranian govt, completely unjustified, and was then shafted by the UK govt who had in turn shafted the Iranian govt back in 1979/80

No she bloody wasn’t! You can’t just make baseless accusations about people!

Absolutely. I don’t know anyone that thinks she was innocent.

bookworm14 · 25/11/2025 20:52

She was visiting her parents. When would she have done the spying? What would she have been spying on? What expertise would she have had that prompted the British government (?) to recruit her as a spy? At the time of her arrest she worked writing funding applications for the Thomson Reuters Foundation. Why would she have taken her tiny child with her on a spy mission? Why would she have jeopardised her very nice life in the UK with her husband and daughter to undertake something so risky?

Corgiowner · 25/11/2025 21:39

Really?
Until I came on this thread I didn’t know anyone in their right mind who thought she was anything but an innocent women who got caught up in complicated and long standing government politics (on both sides).
Assuming she has more than 2 brain cells to rub together if she was a spy for the UK government surely the last thing she would be doing is writing a book/assist with a TV programme about her experience often criticising her employer, she’d keep her head down and hope we all forget about her.

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/11/2025 21:51

Loopylalalou · 25/11/2025 19:09

Yes, I agree. She was imprisoned for doing something not liked by the Iranian government, so she contributed to her own plight. As I remember, Boris tried to intervene on her case but Covid was ongoing and it came to nought on the immediate basis as her husband expected. I found the demands irritating - and her lack of any appreciation for the diplomacy used to free her - and certainly won’t be watching this programme.

Your memory is faulty.

What would she have been spying for the British on? Conditions inside Iranian prisons?

Pollqueen · 25/11/2025 22:08

I have no words apart from to repeat, there is so much ignorance on this thread and around the whole situation in general. Nazanin was not a spy, did not spy for the British govt and was held hostage because the British govt shafted the Iranian govt back in 1980

Please, do some basic research

Pollqueen · 25/11/2025 22:15

For all those saying Nazanin was a spy, please spend a few minutes googling the intra iran scandal

Haven’t seen it yet and will be interested to see if all sides are shown and not just her terrible ordeal. Agree about what others posted about FO advice against going. Wonder if the hundreds of millions in payment that changed hands will be mentioned. She was a dual citizen. The Boris bumbling didn’t help, but regine shouldn’t have had the opportunity to use her like that and that means not giving in to their demands. They effectively kept ger child too.

Edited

There was no advice against travelling. That came after her ordeal.

Lots of people know she was innocent.

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/11/2025 23:41

Had she been a spy, the UK would have had moved quickly and no one would ever have heard of her.

Teddleshon1 · 25/11/2025 23:55

She was a fool to visit Iran as someone with dual Iranian / UK citizenship. The risks of doing so were well known in 2016. Large numbers of dual citizens have been held as she was.

purpleme12 · 26/11/2025 00:07

I'm only halfway through the first episode and it's a really hard watch

Had to stop it to have a break

Shoutygouty · 26/11/2025 00:12

I don’t really understand why there are people here suggesting she was a spy. Is this some weird bot discreditation - I mean is that a thing or just some very hard of thinking people?

As for remembering Boris as a helping hand - wtf!

I hope she is doing ok and that the family is working through it all.

Could be, could their racism speaking.

Could be that a large number of people are still under the impression "spy" means running around with silenced pistol assassinating people.

NZR is not and never has been a "spy". Was she working to further UK interests in Iran and simultaneously in breach of Iranian Law? Unquestionably. She knew precisely what she was doing, knew it was illegal in Iran, as did UK intelligence, the BBC, and evidently the Iranian Government

But what, precisely, are you suggesting she was ‘doing’ on a trip to visit her parents with her toddler child? This is just nonsense.

OhDear111 · 26/11/2025 08:11

@Pollqueen The tank order was placed by the Shah. There were reasons why the money wasn’t repaid and the British company did supply part of the order. There had been negotiations but the USA was involved and I’ve attached a summary from the Guardian. Of course RR was deeply unhappy about what was going on but, as usual with diplomacy with a very difficult violent country, if was very prolonged and there was activity in our courts too. Plus other nations were involved as they had dual nationality citizens who had been captured too. NZR wasn’t the only one. Hence it got more complex and other policies came into play.

Thank you for your mansplaining. I am perfectly aware of this

OhDear111 · 26/11/2025 08:32

Unfortunately your post was light on detail. Rather black and white. I’ve filled it in for you and everyone else. Mansplaining?Typically this is from a man to a woman so not really applicable. You could have provided a more detailed explanation yourself.

She had been multiple times to see her parents. She stayed well away from any politics they avoid being accused
