Is Blackpool where Come Dancing used to be filmed?

I was at school in Blackpool in the 60s and had a friend who used to spend her weekends taking part in ballroom dancing competitions, so I was perhaps more interested in the programme then than most teenagers.

At that time Come Dancing was a competition between different parts of the UK and was broadcast from ballrooms all over the country. I think it was teams from two regions each week, each one providing couples to perform the various dances and a formation team: my favourite bit. IIRC, when in Blackpool it wasn’t from the Tower Ballroom or even the Winter Gardens, but the Mecca ballroom on Central Drive. I remember going to ordinary dances there and drinking Babycham. As I was still at school and it was before exams I must have been underage.

According to this Wikipedia article Come Dancing began by broadcasting from various ballrooms owned by Mecca, which fits with that.

George's outfit is horrible. We do not need a return of 80s grey shoes and plastic shiny belts. Mullet or no mullet.

Appalonia · 15/11/2025 19:29

Oh this is so beautiful. Combination of masculine strength and feminine grace.

Zempy · 15/11/2025 19:29

That was lovely from George

Harvestmoons · 15/11/2025 19:29

Loved that from George

NowNumber5 · 15/11/2025 19:29

Quite missed seeing the George Cloneys posse this week 😔

chaosmaker · 15/11/2025 19:30

Oh a Rumba, didn't like it.

Otterdrunk · 15/11/2025 19:30

That was v emotive George sharing about his mum. Not overblown or overly dramatic. But interesting it’s been revealed now, at Blackpool at this stage in the competition. Too cynical now I think to ever enjoy Strictly like I used to.

AlwaysRightISwear · 15/11/2025 19:30

Very nice dance though.

EchoedSilence · 15/11/2025 19:30

Hmmm. Disappointing. She dances around him too much and he just walks about.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 15/11/2025 19:30

I liked that

I'm confused, is it Dead Grandad or Sick Mam?

Don't be greedy George.

And Vicky thought she caught the hearts and minds votes with her dogs.

Indigovelvet · 15/11/2025 19:30

George has a lovely soul.

FuzzyPuffling · 15/11/2025 19:30

All my DGPs and parents are dead and DH had cancer. Do I win a glitterball?

shiverjrteee · 15/11/2025 19:30

Aah George absolutely love him. He gets my votes.

RainbowSnake · 15/11/2025 19:31

I’m not a massive rumba fan but that seemed nice enough. It’s not going to be a night of spectacular dances really is it?

C8H10N4O2 · 15/11/2025 19:31

is it just me or was that a very “ballroom” rumba? Take away the story and it seemed to be very ordinary.

Holluschickie · 15/11/2025 19:31

I dont like Alexis's choreo much.

Thank you for this

AnneShirleysNewDress · 15/11/2025 19:31

It was a bit contempowaft for me.

To be fair, the Rumba is meant to show the female partner off.

chaosmaker · 15/11/2025 19:31

Thought it was a CC
