THE FORSYTES - Mon 9pm ch 5 - TV PACE NO SPOILERS

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/10/2025 13:11

5 has announced the release date for new period drama The Forsytes, which features the likes of Doctor Who (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/sci-fi/doctor-who-season-15-release-date/)'s Millie Gibson among the cast

The series, which is an adaptation of John Galsworthy’s Forsyte Saga novels, will launch on Monday 20th October at 9pm, with each episode airing weekly.

Penned by Poldark screenwriter Debbie Horsfield, The Forsytes (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/forsyte-saga-millie-gibson-uk-broadcast-newsupdate/) follows an upper-class family of stockbrokers across multiple generations, set against the backdrop of a rapidly evolving late-Victorian world.

The show (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/downton-abbey-star-joins-forsytes-newsupdate/) focuses on the battle between Soames Forsyte (Home and Away (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/soaps/home-and-away/)’s Joshua Orpin) and his cousin Jolyon (Fate: The Winx Saga (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/fantasy/wheel-of-time-what-to-watch-after-cancellation/)’s Danny Griffin) as they clash over who will take over the family firm.

James and his son Soames have been edged out of the family stockbrocking company now run by JAMES‘s older brother jolyon and his son Junior

This doesn’t sit well with JAMES and Soames

Plus Jolyon marriage to Frances and becoming step dad to her daughter June , is threatened by the return of Louisa , from his past.

Lousia is a dressmaker and has a big secret

A trailer was previously unveiled (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/the-forsytes-5-trailer-exclusive-newsupdate/), giving fans a first look at this clash between the cousins, as well as a glimpse at Gibson as Soames's wife, Irene Heron, and Eleanor Tomlinson (The Couple Next Door (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/couple-next-door-season-2-ending-explained/)) as Louisa Byrne, Jo's first love.

The cast also features Tuppence Middleton (Downton Abbey: A New Era (https://www.radiotimes.com/movies/downton-abbey-3-release-date/)) as Frances Forsyte and Stephen Moyer (True Blood) as Jolyon Forsyte Sr.

A second instalment was confirmed back in June, despite the first series not having aired yet.

Paul Testar, Commissioning Editor, Drama, 5, said at the time: “We are excited to announce that production has begun on the second series of The Forsytes.

"With the first series set to air soon, this early commitment to a second chapter is a testament to the strength of the stories and characters that we know our audience will embrace.

"We look forward to sharing even more of this rich and compelling series.”

Damien Timmer, CCO & Founder of Mammoth Screen, added: “We can’t wait for the world to see series 1 of The Forsytes, and we’re so pleased to be getting ahead of ourselves and starting on this thrilling second series with Debbie Horsfield’s irresistible scripts and our glorious – and ever expanding – cast.”

You can watch the finale online in advance if you want

TelephoneWires · 19/11/2025 18:24

I am quite behind you all on this, but Irene is far too enthusiastic about Soames in this version so far. She literally told him she didn’t fancy him at all and married him under duress in the original 1967 version. Also Soames is far too nice. He really shouldn’t be fanciable at all.

Clawdy · 20/11/2025 08:43

Yes, he's definitely fanciable - would be better without that moustache though!

TelephoneWires · 20/11/2025 08:49

I have watched it all now. Agree with you about the moustache! But otherwise it is a really different story - she is flattered and mislead about their marriage and goes off him once they are married in this version. Maybe the original story is too grim for modern sensibilities and that’s why they changed it. But him saying he would let her go if it didn’t work out before they married is a bit weird and out of context this way.

Roselily123 · 20/11/2025 12:08

Seen them all now.
Not sure how I got 2 episodes this week, but really enjoying it, though it is a bit slow.
enjoyed the phil and Somme bit.
same story , different slant.

I haven't watched it, but I read the finale recap yesterday. They seem to have stopped mid-story so there will have to be another season.

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/11/2025 18:25

You read the recap without watching ? Why

OP posts:
beguilingeyes · 24/11/2025 18:49

To see how much they've changed the story.

HarryVanderspeigle · 24/11/2025 21:26

I watched the 2002 version and enjoyed it, but don't remember any of the plot really. This one is generally enjoyable, but Jolyon seems jarringly young. Every time he walks with June, it feels like they are love interests instead of father and daughter. I also find it odd that none of the younger generation have children, despite being married. In the days of no contraception and marrying young, it wouldn't have taken long.

beguilingeyes · 25/11/2025 06:55

The 2002 version stayed very close to the books. Irene loathed Soames from the off and slept in a separate room.
Young Jolyon leaves his wife for June's governess and his two children with her are born after that.
This version is all over the place, story wise.

In the original story Irene and Bosini are lovers and he dies in a carriage accident. With this version there is no telling what will happen.

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/11/2025 22:22

finally seen e6 so avoided thread till now

wonder why they changed from books so much according to those who have read books

obv soames knows Irene isn’t happy and why he will try to take her away from family

joy evaluating his life and walking away from money job title marriage to be with his kids

and granny having a grandson who no one knows about

hope for a s2

There kind of has to be a season 2. So much to happen that hasn’t yet. I haven’t read the books but found a website comparing the books with the 1967 series and actually they had to add a lot in because the books leave a lot to the imagination including Soames and Irene’s courtship apparently so maybe this is just another interpretation rather than straying so far as I thought.

TelephoneWires · 27/11/2025 06:46

This is blog I saw. Full of spoilers for the next series so don’t read it if you don’t want to know what happens.

In the books (and the two other series).Jolyon is June's father, not stepfather and he leaves his wife for his children's governess. His family cut him off and he doesn't really see them again until much later.
There is no Louisa, Eleanor Tomlinson's character has been invented for the show. Irene plays the piano and later gives lessons. I don't know where the whole ballet bit comes from and Soames is a solicitor .
She's changed so much.
I really recommend the 2002 series. It's great and Damian Lewis is a fantastic Soames. I'm currently watching the 1967 version which has 26 episodes and I'm really enjoying it.

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/11/2025 18:11

I say often but why do they change books if they think are good enough to make as a drama

so no twins in the book so does he leave his wife

OP posts:
TelephoneWires · 27/11/2025 18:22

Yes he leaves his wife for the nanny - I think June is around 10 - and then the children (are they Jolly and Holly?) are born after that. I wonder if they changed it to close the age gap a bit between June and the younger children.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/11/2025 10:45

Oh so the nanny has his kids v kids happening with a poor seamstress

OP posts:
beguilingeyes · 28/11/2025 11:47

Also the kids happen after he's left his wife for her, not years ago.

It's a governess rather than a nanny.
