THE FORSYTES - Mon 9pm ch 5 - TV PACE NO SPOILERS

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/10/2025 13:11

5 has announced the release date for new period drama The Forsytes, which features the likes of Doctor Who (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/sci-fi/doctor-who-season-15-release-date/)'s Millie Gibson among the cast

The series, which is an adaptation of John Galsworthy’s Forsyte Saga novels, will launch on Monday 20th October at 9pm, with each episode airing weekly.

Penned by Poldark screenwriter Debbie Horsfield, The Forsytes (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/forsyte-saga-millie-gibson-uk-broadcast-newsupdate/) follows an upper-class family of stockbrokers across multiple generations, set against the backdrop of a rapidly evolving late-Victorian world.

The show (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/downton-abbey-star-joins-forsytes-newsupdate/) focuses on the battle between Soames Forsyte (Home and Away (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/soaps/home-and-away/)’s Joshua Orpin) and his cousin Jolyon (Fate: The Winx Saga (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/fantasy/wheel-of-time-what-to-watch-after-cancellation/)’s Danny Griffin) as they clash over who will take over the family firm.

James and his son Soames have been edged out of the family stockbrocking company now run by JAMES‘s older brother jolyon and his son Junior

This doesn’t sit well with JAMES and Soames

Plus Jolyon marriage to Frances and becoming step dad to her daughter June , is threatened by the return of Louisa , from his past.

Lousia is a dressmaker and has a big secret

A trailer was previously unveiled (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/the-forsytes-5-trailer-exclusive-newsupdate/), giving fans a first look at this clash between the cousins, as well as a glimpse at Gibson as Soames's wife, Irene Heron, and Eleanor Tomlinson (The Couple Next Door (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/couple-next-door-season-2-ending-explained/)) as Louisa Byrne, Jo's first love.

The cast also features Tuppence Middleton (Downton Abbey: A New Era (https://www.radiotimes.com/movies/downton-abbey-3-release-date/)) as Frances Forsyte and Stephen Moyer (True Blood) as Jolyon Forsyte Sr.

A second instalment was confirmed back in June, despite the first series not having aired yet.

Paul Testar, Commissioning Editor, Drama, 5, said at the time: “We are excited to announce that production has begun on the second series of The Forsytes.

"With the first series set to air soon, this early commitment to a second chapter is a testament to the strength of the stories and characters that we know our audience will embrace.

"We look forward to sharing even more of this rich and compelling series.”

Damien Timmer, CCO & Founder of Mammoth Screen, added: “We can’t wait for the world to see series 1 of The Forsytes, and we’re so pleased to be getting ahead of ourselves and starting on this thrilling second series with Debbie Horsfield’s irresistible scripts and our glorious – and ever expanding – cast.”

Did people have short engagements in this era? Soames and Irene don’t know each other and now they’re married

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/11/2025 22:31

He said he wanted to marry in 2w so could go to Paris

Bloody hell, she's abandoned the books completely. They've got the same names, but that's about it.

I don't know why they bothered calling it The Forsytes!

Clawdy · 05/11/2025 17:09

Really enjoying it, as I've never read the book or seen the other adaptations!

Cynic17 · 05/11/2025 17:53

I couldn't watch after the first episode. I know it's a prequel, but it's still wrong, eg should be Aunt Ann, not grandmother. Also June is Young Jolyon's actual daughter, not stepdaughter, and he'd already been gone about 15 years by this point, with a new family.
And I miss all the other old Forsytes, like Nicholas and Roger, and the unseen but ever-present Timothy.
Everyone looks wrong, and too young.
Old Jolyon and James didn't live next door to each other.

You could have written a great prequel about Soames meeting Irene etc, but this is just nonsense. I was so cross that I've had to read the books. Again!

Housewife2010 · 05/11/2025 18:13

I definitely recommend the original series. I'm half way through and it's so good.

It's not really a prequel though is it as June has already met Bosinney? It's a complete fabrication.

Im on ep2, its ok, watchable enough but agree some modern hairstyles and changes such as Jolyon becoming stepdad to June are distracting.
I loved the 2002 version, it cemented my love for Damian Lewis! I started watching the 1967 on YouTube last night and it's fantastic, I really wish I'd watched it before now.

MrsFantastic · 08/11/2025 09:45

I haven't read the books, but I'm annoyed by young Jo not wearing a tie in the office. As if that would have been allowed in a business like that.

beguilingeyes · 08/11/2025 18:15

Those recaps are a slog aren't they? She might as well have stuck to the books if the plot is going to be that boring.

Yes I think I’ve lost the will to live with this one. Have been watching the really old series and some Pallisers and they are so much better, even allowing for them being 50+ years old.

It isn’t just the departure from the story in key areas, its just totally wrong historically in so many places. If they had called it “The Smiths” and presented it as an alternative history story it might be ok but it bears no resemblance to either the book or Victorian England.

Irenesortof · 08/11/2025 20:12

I gave up after the first episode. Hated it. Untrue to the books but offering nothing as interesting. The 2002 series is infinitely better.

Karmaisagod · 09/11/2025 08:00

I am enjoying it moderately - I can see the anachronisms some of you mention, but I'm a sucker for a period drama, and surprisingly I've never watched or read this one, although I've known about it for years. I'm invested in June's and particularly Irene's futures - I fear Soames is going to stop Irene from dancing. I love Irene's character. And the architect (Bossiney?) is nice to look at.

But where can we watch episode 4? It's not up on Channel 5 until tomorrow.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/11/2025 12:41

I don’t think you can binge ch 5 stuff

I had a feeling that Soames would try and be controlling towards Irene now regarding not liking her friends and screwing the telegram up in his hand. I bet he gets her to give up dance too

Edites to say looks like it was Soames telegram but I still think he might be a bit controlling towards Irene like with the sunrise

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/11/2025 23:14

I hope he doesn’t as he married for love

just as June will

It’s just his behaviour like stopping Irene auditioning for her dance because he now has to go to London to explain to his father face to face. Stuff like that and I hope I’m wrong
