A first-look trailer has been revealed for Murder Before Evensong (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/murder-before-evensong-matthew-lewis-first-look-newsupdate/), the new six-part murder mystery series based on the novel of the same name by Reverend Richard Coles.

He was in IACGMOOH - I liked him

Matthew Lewis's character Canon Daniel Clement.

Daniel is the Rector of English village Champton, who finds himself entangled in a murder case when a dead body turns up in the church.

Other cast members for the series are also seen in the trailer, including Amanda Redman as Daniel's mother Audrey, Amit Shah as DS Neil Vanloo, Adam James as Bernard De Floures and Tamzin Outhwaite as Stella Harper.

Other stars featuring in the show's cast include Meghan Treadway, Alexander Delamain, Marion Bailey, Amanda Hadingue, Francis Magee and Nina Toussaint-White.

As the police move in and the bodies start piling up, Daniel is the only one who can try and keep his fractured community together... and catch a killer."

Beyond Murder Before Evensong, Coles has written four more books in the Canon Clement series (https://www.amazon.co.uk/stores/Reverend-Richard-Coles/author/B0DR7F4RHW?tag=radtim0b-21&ascsubtag=radiotimes-2323684) – 2023's A Death in the Parish, 2024's Murder at the Monastery and Murder Under the Mistletoe, and 2025's A Death on Location.

Lewis is, of course, best known for playing Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter film series,

Murder Before Evensong
Canon Daniel Clement is Rector of Champton, where he lives alongside his widowed mother – opinionated, fearless, ever-so-slightly annoying Audrey – and his two dachshunds, Cosmo and Hilda.

When Daniel announces a plan to install a lavatory in the church, the parish is suddenly (and unexpectedly) divided: as lines are drawn, long-buried secrets come dangerously close to destroying the apparent calm of the village.

I agree. There’s not many suspects left and it is usually the most famous so unless the vicar’s mum did it, we are left with Bernard.

Mildorado · 05/11/2025 14:44

I think it's one - or both - of the old women.
They're up to no good.

OneSunnyGuide · 05/11/2025 17:23

It has got better in the last two episodes. I loved the detail about the Registrars Ink. Very Richard Cole. I think I know who it is but wish it wasn't them. Bernard is far too 'normal' .The Bernard in the book is much more like Lord Ashfordly In Heartbeat or similar.

With regard to the 2 ladies , I do feel something is going on with them , possibly
" Scallywags ".
To anyone not watching , scallywags is in the storyline !

Mildorado · 05/11/2025 17:30

Yes, I liked the registrars' ink detail. I'm enjoying it much better now

FurForksSake · 05/11/2025 17:52

I’ve accidentally finished it, I thought five on demand only had up to the current episode and I was a bit behind. I thought it got a lot better and I’d watch another series.

If you read the book then Surely you know who the killer is

tho everyone is saying it’s not like the books so ……..

not the sweet old biddies …….

I cant remember who the killer is! I have read all the books and in my opinion the Bernard in the books is a pompous, prejudiced and misogynistic man who had 3 ex wives, while in this TV adaptation he's just a normal guy.

No not a spoiler. I haven’t seen it all

Nor read the books

I just don’t think the old biddies did it. They are sweet and innocent

tho did have sex years ago

Phew!!
I can relax! Yes, it didn't start well, but I'm enjoying it now, episode 5 was good. Also, I think the character of Daniel Clements has developed a bit.

Mildorado · 06/11/2025 07:35

Nice touch to have The Communards playing in the background in Alexander's studio.

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/11/2025 10:47

I didn’t even notice

I have finished series I cracked and watched the last episode on 5 App.
I enjoyed it so much more than the book. Hopefully another series.

RaraRachael · 06/11/2025 17:01

Shows how much of the book I took in - I thought Stella was the killer.
Who was the body in the crypt? The music was too loud and I couldn't hear what Daniel said.

Kerling, the spy

RaraRachael · 06/11/2025 17:05

I don't think I'm paying attention for much of this as I've no recollection of Kerling 🙄

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/11/2025 17:30

Think he was the man who went missing

I'm enjoying it.

Finding it an easy watch after Riot Women!

lazymum99 · 06/11/2025 21:26

It’s better than the book. And it’s not often I say that. That episode was quite exciting

diddl · 07/11/2025 18:23

Yes.

Something to do with the war or who the father of Kath's baby is/was?

DisforDarkChocolate · 07/11/2025 18:25

I've really enjoyed it but boy do I feel old seeing my teen years in a period drama!
