So exciting! It looks like maybe they are going to segue into Polo!

Every husband and boyfriend I know who has watched S1 loved it. It’s very bloke friendly I think.

greglet · 23/08/2025 21:00

Maxim Ays was a sixth former when I started teaching at my previous school (2014)! Pleased to hear his name; I knew he’d gone off to drama school but hadn’t thought about him since.

TheSecondMrsCampbellBlack · 27/08/2025 17:12

I am rewatching season 1, again and it's so wonderful, I just wanted to say that. The acting is superb. And the music and it's so faithful to the 80s! I've just watched the lovely scene between Fred-Fred and Lizzie on the train and also the shoot, all so brilliantly done.
Monica is such a treat as well, talking about not sleeping with the help and firing the gun while Valerie is trying to tell her that her husband is sleeping with Cameron. Bliss!

Question for all of you JC fans. Although its my era (I grew up in the 70s/80s) I never read JC. Watched Rivals and loved it. So I listened to the audio versions of Riders and Rivals and loved them too. Moved onto Polo and it's just not doing it for me. It was fine till Perdita went to Argentina and then it has got duller and duller, I have got to the charity polo match and am considering giving up, does it get better? Too many characters in this part and most of them not very interesting, I preferred it at the beginning with Daisy, Ricky etc.

CharlotteLightandDark · 06/09/2025 23:17

I saw the cast in a bar in my city a couple of months ago, I guess they were filming locally then?
the guy who plays Declan was very good looking irl

ILoveLukeAlderton · 07/09/2025 07:47

@EffectivelyDecluttering Polo is my favourite, I’d definitely say stick with it

Your name is the clue there! I think I will but I have got the new Strike and Slow Horses books lined up and tempting me away. It just feels a lot less dramatic (from about the car crash onwards) compared to the other two.

Notonthestairs · 07/09/2025 10:47

Polo is my favourite Rutshire book but I think there is an undeniable sag when Perdita goes to Argentina. I think that’s because she’s introducing lots of new characters and bedding them in. But whilst it might feel a bit aimless the same characters are key to later events in US & UK so it does all knit together.

BestIsWest · 07/09/2025 10:49

Just marking my place!

EffectivelyDecluttering · 07/09/2025 11:21

Aha, I have just got to Christmas and it is picking up again, phew!

SwallowsandAmazonians · 07/09/2025 13:15

This is exciting, here for the chat. I reread the books every few years but somehow they don't stick in my head so I can always be a little surprised by the plots. I love the Helen and Malise casting.

Rivalled · 07/09/2025 14:48

I love Polo - agree Argentina not my fave bit save for anything with Luke in it!

I started a project about 5 years back to try all of the wines mentioned in JC - mostly for Christmas as they’re expensive 😂

Well, I’d say keep going, I’ve just reread it and enjoyed it but it’s not as good as Riders or Rivals, agreed

He's swoony, agreed. He didn’t do it for me as Poldark but Declan? Oh yes!

Oh, can we have a list? When I’m rereading I quite often go and look stuff up, drinks included. Last week I looked up the colour of a jay wing as Rupert’s eyes were described as that colour and I’ve also looked up obscure poets and restaurants!

Her descriptive writing is fantastic . Off the top of my head she’s responsible for Margaux, Pol Roger, - and Krug is on my hit list next!

but I need to go back and research this again!

Sourisblanche · 07/09/2025 16:35

Oh so looking forward to series deux! I may have moved to France but will always love JC and the whole class/80’s/British country life vibe.

Ordering in the Pol Roger darling🥂

Also my dh, not even British or read any of the books, enjoyed the series.

TheSecondMrsCampbellBlack · 07/09/2025 17:04

@Rivalled also Pouilly Fume and Pouilly Fuse, plus Muscadet

Pouilly fuisse increase fly hard to find - it’s a long term favourite from JC! And how can I forget Sancerre?

Sourisblanche · 07/09/2025 17:34

Sancerre, pouilly anything yes but I’ll leave the Muscadet for youGrin

Oh this is fabulous! I always thought there should be a JC cookbook. I would eat it all. Give me some New Year's Day breakfast kedgeree or a beef daube. Or gull's eggs dipped in celery salt. Maybe we need a full tasting menu with wine pairings.

I tried Barsac off the back of Guy and Georgie’s dinner party in TMWMHJ! When Flora nicked a bottle and wouldn’t waitress for them because the teacher she fancied wasn’t coming!

”a battalion of Dom Perignon” then Georgie fleetingly thinks of their overdraft! Not surprised, love!

ChessieFL · 08/09/2025 11:46

I want to know what all the perfumes smell like - Fracas and Quercus come to mind.
