So exciting! It looks like maybe they are going to segue into Polo!

I would love it if Billy appeared, played by Jamie Bamber.

Yes even if they just left in the drink driving - maybe they will as that’ll be more true to the time frame and still somewhat forgivable? That’s where I’d go…

Edited

Yes they might leave that in, it was the 80s after all!

Here for all the Rivals chat, I absolutely loved season one. Can't wait for season two. Does anyone know if you can still watch season one on Disney?

You definitely can, I'm on my 3rd rewatch!

Do you think Billy Lloyd Foxe will appear? Dominic Treadwell Collins has said they've created new characters (with Jilly's blessing) but I'm not sure why that would be necessary...I would've thought they'd be omitting characters not adding new ones!

No! WHY would they create new characters? Jilly wrote enough great ones.

I'd love Billy and Janey to appear but doubt they will, they were more Riders era.

Yay!

so I think Suki Benedict must be Eliot Salt? I think I like the Malise casting too! Chessie had better be a foxy temptress madam.

I do think Billy would be good as a character but they could leave him out very easily.

either way, we’ll be needing series 3. I also think you could leave a LOT of actual polo out if you had Rivals running into it. Grown ups aren’t interested in Perdita’s story, they like Daisy and Drew and Chessie and Ricky and Bart and the other adults. The spoilt teenager bits are the ones you can skim over lightly and have them as bouncing off points for everyone else’s talking and meeting. Perdita can be a catalyst.

They seem to want to stay with TV - the Beattie J talk show thing. Wonder if that’ll be more of a factor , it’s a shame saint JC herself didn’t write more about the tv industry.

I was disappointed with the casting of Beattie Johnson, she was a grubby blonde in the books, not at all like the actress who played her.

I hope they keep Dancer Maitland. He throws a good party and oh how well Rivals partied!

TheSecondMrsCampbellBlack · 22/08/2025 13:40

And Tony Baddingham is obviously not dead! I wonder how they'll explain that away. I hope Monica is still in it, she's amazing. Ditto Danny Dyer and Katherine Parkinson, it would be such a shame to miss them!

@TheSecondMrsCampbellBlack thank you. Will need to have a re watch soon.

GertrudeOHara · 22/08/2025 14:02

They definitely don’t have a dead Tony - he is still alive at the end - it’s just halfway or 2/3rds of the original book.

I think it’s the fight that in the book is in Hamilton Terrace isn’t it? Then Cameron moves in with RCB and has a dreadful time with the children.

Rupert and Taggie’s wedding is in Polo and I think Drew drives Suki back past the Priory on Christmas Eve mentioning the Patrick’s birthday NYE party as “going to be the thrash of the decade” so there is some fine tuning on the timeline to sort out as they’ve done all that already.

I want the hunt ball and The Merry Widow and the surprise affair and the ghosted memoirs.

Oh YES, the wedding is right at the start of the book! OH I HOPE it's in!

Placemaking - so exciting! All the chat about JC's characters, it's like meeting up with old friends 🧡 I just so love her books.

Notonthestairs · 22/08/2025 15:01

Placemarking.
Luke is my favourite character of all the Rutshire novels so I hope they’ve kept him in.

Rivalled · 22/08/2025 15:10

How could they miss a chance to stage a huge 80s wedding at a cathedral? Surely not!

Rivalled · 22/08/2025 15:12

Idk the Beattie actress had that air of danger and grubbiness combined with sex appeal - they definitely cast for the acting and not the match on paper here, it works for me.

Beattie and Sarah S - a lot of them really are such strong personalities that would’ve been hard to cast.

Well Danny Dyer has rocking that moustache fairly recently so guessing he’s still going to be in it

Amanda Lawrence, Daisy? Although maybe she's a bit old for her, Daisy had Perdita when she was 19 and Perdita is 19 in Polo so Daisy is only in her 40s
https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1054648/

I don't know this actor, but she's got a bit of a sloaney Sukey Benedict feel in this picture. Possibly too old, though.

TheSecondMrsCampbellBlack · 22/08/2025 12:34

This guy looks exactly like a Carlisle twin to me. More likely an Alderton brother though, I guess.

ChessieFL · 22/08/2025 18:34

I’m looking forward to seeing who is going to be playing my namesake!

MagAmberson · 22/08/2025 18:42

I wonder how they'll work the Perdita revelation into the timeline as Declan already knows about her existence in Rivals (but burnt the evidence after rupert's interview) so will that embolden his opposition to Rupert & Taggie? Will that all be revealed in the memoirs instead of later in the Polo timeline? I always thought Declan backed down and gave his blessing pretty easily considering how strongly he opposed the relationship for most of the book!

I thought the first series was excellent. Really stylish and great fun.

I know with the Jilly Cooper link they had a ready made fan base but I kind of wish they didn't make such a big deal out of it. Whilst I love her, I think it put a lot of men off watching it- and I think they would have enjoyed it too.

My husband had never read any Jilly Cooper but watched Rivals S1 with me and loved it. I would definitely encourage other men to give it a go.

Mine too. He then said he’d read the books and is stuck in it. He lacks commitment 🤣

Eliot Salt, no idea. Maybe she's Daisy? Or Mrs Drew Benedict?

She's giving strong Bibi Aldrerton vibes to me. So excited for all of this!
