Bookish is a crime drama starring Mark Gatiss as a crime-solving bookshop owner while Polly Walker plays his wife.

Bookish is a stylish crime drama starring Mark Gatiss and Polly Walker.

Set in London in 1946, the series is created by Mark Gatiss himself , and he's also the main star playing gay antique book seller Gabriel Book, who helps the police solve crimes by finding the answers to puzzles in the thousands of books that line his shelves.

Bridgerton's Polly Walker plays his wife Trottie while the show also boasts a stellar line-up of guest stars including Daniel Mays, Joely Richardson and Jonas Nay.

Bookish release date Bookish starts in the UK on the UKTV channel Alibi, with an opening double bill on Wednesday July 16 2025 at 8.10pm and 9pm.

Double episodes will then run weekly each Wednesday at the same times.

Bookish plot Bookish is set in London 1946 andfollows the eccentric and unconventional Gabriel Book (Mark Gatiss) who owns an antique bookshop but is also a self-appointed detective to the local police, acquiring all the knowledge he needs from the books around him.

Gabriel surrounds himself with loveable, damaged misfits who he informally protects, cajoles, and mentors.

He cares deeply for his wife Trottie (Polly Walker) who runs the wallpaper shop next door.

However, theirs is a "lavender marriage" designed to hide Gabriel’s sexuality at a time when it was illegal to be gay.

Gabriel is happily married to his childhood best friend Trottie in an arrangement that suits them both.

However, when Book hires a new assistant, Jack (Connor Finch), who’s just been released from prison, what will he make of his boss’s unconventional set-up?

The two-part opening story, which guest stars Daniel Mays and Rosie Cavaliero, sees Book helping the police investigate the death of local chemist Mr Harkup. Inspector Bliss (Elliot Levy) assumes the death was a suicide, but Book isn’t sure, and gathers evidence suggesting Harkup was murdered.

Bookish cast — Mark Gatiss on playing Gabriel Book Mark Gatiss plays the hero of Bookish — bookseller and sleuth Gabriel Book. "Post-war London is my favourite period," says Mark. 'It’s such an interesting time - the whole world has been turned upside down, and nobody knows their place any more.

It’s very exciting, but also kind of frightening. "Every detective has their own thing, and Book’s is that he can draw on all the world’s books - either physically, or in his head.

It’s difficult to come up with something that hasn’t been done before, but the fact that he’s gay and in an arranged marriage is unusual!"

Mark Gatiss previously shot to fame with the comedy show The League of Gentlemen and has also starred in Nighty Night, Funland, Wolf Hall, Sherlock and Game of Thrones. He’s appeared in Doctor Who, Good Omens, 3 Body Problem, Operation Mincemeat, Nolly (https://www.whattowatch.com/watching-guides/nolly-starring-helena-bonham-carter-everything-we-know-about-the-new-drama-about-noele-gordon)and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.

Finding it hard to be interested in the characters. Too many stereotype ideas pinched from Agatha Christie et al.

Think I will give up. Cba wirh e4

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/07/2025 23:49

The last episode was very moving

BlueEyedBogWitch · 24/07/2025 22:00

I liked it, apart from the annoying Turkish lass, who seems to have been beamed in from 2025.

I thought MG was delightful in it.

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/07/2025 20:03

I’ve given up but 5&6 tonight

Where is the laughing reaction when you need it! 😁

There is something off about Nora. Can’t put my finger on it. It sounds like she is dubbed. Is she just a bad actress ?

She sounds like she’s being played at the wrong RPM.

DH really wanted to see this as he likes MG. After a few minutes I went back to reading my book. I found it strangely uninvolving and unserious, if that makes sense - I didn’t believe any of it, as though it was all a pastiche of postwar London (an upmarket wallpaper shop, really?) - but then maybe that’s what they intend it to be? Doesn’t help that the only London exterior they show repeatedly is the same blimmin' shot of Gordon Square, and the rest is shot in Belgium so just doesn’t look right, somehow. Also agree that the Nora character is shoehorned in for no clear reason.

Anyway, DH is stubbornly determined to keep watching but IMHO the clever titles with the origami book pages are the best thing about it.

LIZS · 01/08/2025 11:28

Agree. It felt like a vanity piece. Should have been more engaging but somehow missed the mark and the guest actors were underpotentialised and in stereotyped roles.

Newgirls · 03/08/2025 08:46

Seems we are all in agreement on this one. Seems like a waste of a very talented cast. Too many cliches? Thinks it’s clever but doesn’t quite manage it? I think MG destabilised the cast - they all seemed to be watching him rather than become their characters. The Turkish girl looked about 25 but I think was meant to be 14 or something? Jack was good and I wanted that character in another show

BlueEyedBogWitch · 03/08/2025 10:02

I really like it! Blush

On Now.

Victoriawould24 · 03/08/2025 23:41

We only managed 2 episodes it was created by MG and I agree with @LIZSit felt like one big vanity project.
Very hammy (Nora was awful you could tell she was acting if that makes sense) and the plot was just plain boring/preposterous with the audience rooting for no one at all.
Why were we supposed to care about the butcher running off at the end (or anything else tbh) and the nonsense supposed tension with the big light and all the misty weird narrow streets that seemed more Dickens than post war.
It had afternoon tv vibes to me.
Sherlock this ain’t.

olivehater · 04/08/2025 23:05

I enjoyed overall. I like a bit of a light, fun murder series. Just Nora that am not a fan of but she’s not a big enough part to be a problem.

GingerPaste · 04/08/2025 23:09

I like MG a lot and thought he was amusing in this. Otherwise, I just didn’t enjoy it. It missed the mark somehow and the cast seemed mismatched. I gave up about one and a half episodes in.

Newgirls · 05/08/2025 08:21

It’s fascinating how all the right ingredients don’t necessarily work. Script probably looked great for all those people to agree. Wonder why it didn’t gel

1975wasthebest · 05/08/2025 08:33

I wonder if it was a condition of MG that he gets cast as the lead, when he pitched this to production companies.
