Bookish is a crime drama starring Mark Gatiss as a crime-solving bookshop owner while Polly Walker plays his wife.

Bookish is a stylish crime drama starring Mark Gatiss and Polly Walker.

Set in London in 1946, the series is created by Mark Gatiss himself , and he's also the main star playing gay antique book seller Gabriel Book, who helps the police solve crimes by finding the answers to puzzles in the thousands of books that line his shelves.

Bridgerton's Polly Walker plays his wife Trottie while the show also boasts a stellar line-up of guest stars including Daniel Mays, Joely Richardson and Jonas Nay.

Bookish release date Bookish starts in the UK on the UKTV channel Alibi, with an opening double bill on Wednesday July 16 2025 at 8.10pm and 9pm.

Double episodes will then run weekly each Wednesday at the same times.

Bookish plot Bookish is set in London 1946 andfollows the eccentric and unconventional Gabriel Book (Mark Gatiss) who owns an antique bookshop but is also a self-appointed detective to the local police, acquiring all the knowledge he needs from the books around him.

Gabriel surrounds himself with loveable, damaged misfits who he informally protects, cajoles, and mentors.

He cares deeply for his wife Trottie (Polly Walker) who runs the wallpaper shop next door.

However, theirs is a "lavender marriage" designed to hide Gabriel’s sexuality at a time when it was illegal to be gay.

Gabriel is happily married to his childhood best friend Trottie in an arrangement that suits them both.

However, when Book hires a new assistant, Jack (Connor Finch), who’s just been released from prison, what will he make of his boss’s unconventional set-up?

The two-part opening story, which guest stars Daniel Mays and Rosie Cavaliero, sees Book helping the police investigate the death of local chemist Mr Harkup. Inspector Bliss (Elliot Levy) assumes the death was a suicide, but Book isn’t sure, and gathers evidence suggesting Harkup was murdered.

Bookish cast — Mark Gatiss on playing Gabriel Book Mark Gatiss plays the hero of Bookish — bookseller and sleuth Gabriel Book. "Post-war London is my favourite period," says Mark. 'It’s such an interesting time - the whole world has been turned upside down, and nobody knows their place any more.

It’s very exciting, but also kind of frightening. "Every detective has their own thing, and Book’s is that he can draw on all the world’s books - either physically, or in his head.

It’s difficult to come up with something that hasn’t been done before, but the fact that he’s gay and in an arranged marriage is unusual!"

Mark Gatiss previously shot to fame with the comedy show The League of Gentlemen and has also starred in Nighty Night, Funland, Wolf Hall, Sherlock and Game of Thrones. He’s appeared in Doctor Who, Good Omens, 3 Body Problem, Operation Mincemeat, Nolly (https://www.whattowatch.com/watching-guides/nolly-starring-helena-bonham-carter-everything-we-know-about-the-new-drama-about-noele-gordon)and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.

Watched one episode so far and it's OK. Nice period detail and fine acting, but the story isn't grabbing me. I also don't feel Mark Gatiss has enough presence for a lead role, he's just not watchable enough.

I'm watching it on Now, there's a lot of good quality TV on there. They always have good deals for new customers and if you're still with them and try to cancel they'll offer a cheaper deal to stay with them. I also pay a bit extra not to see any crappy ads.

I’ve given up after two episodes. The tone is wrong, the story is a bit boring and MG is miscast.

Rallentanda · 20/07/2025 11:22

We tried this last night but after twenty minutes I just thought, this seems to be aimed at Americans (fair enough) as it was not very...bright? A LOT of explaining things in a very contrived way. Ugh.

LittleJustice · 20/07/2025 21:14

Agree with all of you. V disappointing tbh

Hedjwitch · 20/07/2025 21:19

I enjoyed it,and thought Gatiss was very good in the role. Made me chuckle a few times.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/07/2025 13:23

its ok. Not gripping me like some stuff but watchable

We watched the whole series. I preferred the crime story in 3 and 4 but overall they weren’t the appeal - they were a bit meh. We enjoyed the back story reveals in 5 and 6 though and those particular episodes were a bit weird - dd and I kept getting a bit freaked out as it all seemed so disjointed but in a deliberate way.

we liked Trottie and Books relationship and dd enjoyed Jack.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 21/07/2025 20:28

I enjoyed it.

Did smile at the 'no spoilers' note in the title to then read a LOT of spoilers in the opening post here.

Things I was unaware of because I'd not read anything online about it, just picked them up as and when they were revealed in the programme itself.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/07/2025 22:39

@DrMadelineMaxwell what the false marriage ?

OP posts:
fruitandvegoverload · 22/07/2025 07:37

Yes the opening post is a spoiler. I've watched two episodes and the lavender marriage hasn't been revealed yet, although I guessed it. I don't care because I'm not going to continue watching anyway - it's quite disappointing.

Makers of period dramas always seem to include a young woman character who behaves anachronistically, which I find annoying.

Hedjwitch · 22/07/2025 09:21

I'm enjoying the series apart from the young Turkish girl character who is just irritating.

NecklessMumster · 22/07/2025 09:28

In theory this has all the elements of drama that I like but something not grabbing me so far, and finding MG strangely smug

1975wasthebest · 22/07/2025 09:43

I think one problem was the lack of stakes in the story (I’ve only seen two episodes). And some of the camera angles felt gimmicky and distracting.

LittleJustice · 22/07/2025 12:53

Yeah I thought I'd love it, but actually nearly fell asleep.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/07/2025 14:22

I’m going to try e3 and see how it goes

I can’t quite put my finger on what is wrong with it, but there are some interesting plots which are beautiful and sensitively written. i think it’s too slow in parts, and that MG isn’t perfect for the role, but on the whole I like it.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/07/2025 21:56

I’m struggling again with this
