I can't find another thread about this one. But I'm in pieces after watching this, this one was close to the heart and it defies belief that all these years later the government/ companies involved have all but washed their hands of trying ro achieve any true meaningful outcome to the inquiry that took place. RIP.

Give it watch- it needs to stay current.

I watched it today, it was so sad and beyond belief that only £5000 for the whole building would have been the difference between flammable and non-flammable cladding. So preventable and tragic.

CissOff · 22/06/2025 22:38

I watched it yesterday. Absolutely harrowing 🥺

Sunshineandrainbow · 22/06/2025 22:47

I don't know if I can watch it. DD keeps telling me I must watch it but I don't think I am strong enough at the moment 😞

I thought about putting it off but I don't think there's ever a time where this won't actually get to you, it was just that completely harrowing. But definitely a must watch to keep it being talked about and to keep it in people's minds. Very easy to feel detached when so much else is going on in the world

I'd not seen the video footage of Eric pickles at the enquiry before but my god...there are no words to describe him are there. How can he not even remember the number of lives lost.

It was awful to watch. Poor people

WhereDidAllTheGuitarsGo · 22/06/2025 23:05

I watched it today. Awful. I mean it was awful at the time of course, but watching the news reports offered that element of detachment. Hearing all the individual stories from the people that lived it and the families left behind bridged that gap. It was very emotional.

And the people talking about the composition of the cladding being a disaster waiting to happen - one person said it was akin to sticking a petrol tanker to a building. How could anyone claim it was considered safe when there were literally people watching the news reports in other countries who guessed exactly what material had been used while the fire was still actually happening?

I’ve added it to my watch list. I live in an apartment block but only a small one and I thought about it when we got the bill for the fire safety works
much as I grumbled a bit (it works out about £1700 per apartment) I’m glad they’re on top of keeping it safe

My original front door to my flat self closed in four seconds. And no gaps The one that was fitted earlier this year does NOT self close and there is a gap at the bottom. My tenancy was under threat if i didnt agree to this.

Which means there will be endless call outs to come and fix things. its about the £££££££ The Health and Safety exploitation industry And they have the audacity to do this in Grenfells name.
You literally cannot get people to see that when you live in social housing though. Its free so we should be grateful. Even if its crap and not right and what we had before was right, which it was
IMO the reason tenants have been treated even worse since Grenfell is because the housing sector has seen no one go to prison for Grenfell or even charges brought so they now know they can get away with literally anything.

CKN · 23/06/2025 00:03

Started watching it last night.
Did anyone else think that the 999 responder was soo condescending. You could hear the terror in the callers voice but she was so dismissive - ok I know nobody could have known what was about to happen but I found her manner appalling.

I live in a small block of flats. The house builders signed off fire safety work when it hadn't been done. It was nice to know we could have gone up in flames in minutes thanks to their need to cut corners. It took them 12 years to actually do anything as well.

Its been done now, but we've had to live in a building site for 5 months, a month of which was actually inside the flat, where I had no ceilings.

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 23/06/2025 06:58

Watched this a few days and it is still with me. Cannot believe they knowingly used unsafe material to save £5k. Struggled to get my head around the fact that they didn't evacuate sooner. So sad and no one has been to prosecuted.

notagainyoufool · 23/06/2025 21:29

I was so unsure about watching this, because I knew it would be a difficult watch. Those poor people. It’s just so so awful. And the fact nobody has been held accountable is disgusting.

Yes that 5k was crushing. So fucking ridiculous.

Eric Pickles is an absolute disgrace.

I think Netflix have done a brilliant job putting Grenfell documentary together .
I have listened to all 205 episodes of the Grenfell inquiry podcast . A first class piece of journalistic reporting detailing every day at the inquiry .
The companies , the TMO, the response of Kensington and Chelsea council is absolutely shocking . Throwing away of notebooks when summoned to the inquiry , refusing to attend the inquiry , the obnoxious responses at the inquiry , trying to shift the blame onto the tenants association by branding them as obstructive when they complained about poorly fitting windows , Rydon installing his recently graduated son as project manager as part of the refurbishment … the list went on.
I cried many times listening to this … the only corporate company that had any empathy for those who lost loved ones was the initial architects brought in who disbanded their company after this . They were the only ones whose apology at the inquiry I felt was genuine and conveyed real sadness .

Residents were told to remove their pets, but no compensation was offered to cover the
costs involved.
 No consideration was given to residents who worked night shifts.
 Workers used electricity paid for by of residents, without offering compensation.
 Doors were left open and residents were able to wander in unchallenged by workers
who did not know them.
 Quality alterations that residents had already made to their homes were ripped out to
make way for inferior alternatives.
 Supposedly completed electrical rewiring was found to be substandard and occasionally
dangerous.
 Supposedly completed pipe works and its housing were found to be substandard.
 In some homes, odd sized radiators and kitchen unit doors had been fitted.
 Flooding in one home had been caused by an unsupervised apprentice.
 Households were left overnight without running water or a toilet.
 At least one resident was left without electricity for a whole weekend.
 Some workers were found to be abusive, bullying and inconsiderate, especially towards
elderly or otherwise vulnerable residents

"Hodkinson carried out a qualitative survey of 14 homes refurbished by Rydon that had been the subject of a huge number of complaints. Showers were fitted next to electric fans. A toilet was installed so close to a wall that you could only sit on it sideways. Some households went for days without electricity and weeks without cooking facilities. Cupboards were fitted with wrongly size doors. Tenants who complained reported that they were treated dismissively. One remembered the site supervisor saying to him, “It ain’t Chelsea, mate.” Regenter’s out-of-hours emergency line linked to the wrong database, so callout engineers weren’t available. The striking thing was how long problems could drag out: one family’s flat was flooded in January 2014, and repairs weren’t even scheduled till September. Two years later, their flat still hadn’t been fully repaired and redecorated. Even at the most straightforward level, the work wasn’t done to a decent standard.
When approached for comment, Rydon said that since the complaints were made, three years ago, attempts have been made to remedy the problems. They said the comments were not reflective of most of the residents, and that there was a good level of satisfaction among the residents now.
For tenants with more complicated requirements, the situation was worse. The Cifuentes family, one of whom used a wheelchair, was left without ramps, hoists or any means of escape in a fire, and without a lock on the front door. Repairs were so slow and haphazard that, at one point, the family had to move out for over a month, and the disabled member could only have his needs met by going into a respite unit – whereupon they were threatened with losing their carer’s allowance, their disability allowance and their car."

Oh it was a tough watch, I sobbed throughout it. What a senseless waste of lives :(

Unbelievable arrogance and deceit from the people to blame! Eric Pickles should be locked up - useless fat tw*t!

heart broke for the poor firefighters too!

And the look on the barristers face as he replies ‘Right’

Probably had a date with a couple of Big Macs at McDonalds judging by the size of him. Heart attack waiting to happen.

Dont you have to have a heart to have a heart attack?!!

hardtocare · 24/06/2025 19:31

It’s a really hard watch. I got to the part where a mum and baby were trapped in their flat on the phone to one of the rescuers and the baby was crying, then a while later she said the baby was dead and not to rescue her anymore. At that point I couldn’t continue

Agreed. And to think that disgusting fat bastard got appointed to the House of Lords AFTER all of this. Words fail me. He should be in prison.

I'm hoping a public outcry might lead to some action much like with the Post Office scandal.
