Murder mystery thriller on sat at 9 and e2 follows

3&4 next sat and 5&6 week after

The Last Anniversary:

Plot
The series is set in sunny Australia and the plot is as follows, "Moriarty’s story is set on Scribbly Gum Island, a place of many secrets.

The one that made it famous – the disappearance of a young couple decades ago – might have made the island a destination for true crime tourists, but when it comes to secrets, the three generations of women that call Scribbly Gum home, hold far more.

"When Sophie Honeywell (Teresa Palmer) inherits a house on the island, left to her by her ex-boyfriend’s great-aunt Connie, it’s the fresh start she’s craving

But despite the unwelcome reception she receives on arrival.

Single and approaching 40, Sophie is intrigued by something else Connie left her – a promise that she might finally find the man of her dreams.

" Exciting!
The Last Anniversary: Cast
There is a seriously star-studded cast set to appear on our screens for this new series alongside some fresh talent, and they are as follows:
• Teresa Palmer
• Miranda Richardson
• Danielle Macdonald

•	Helen Thomson
•	Susan Prior
•	Claude Scott-Mitchell
•	Charlie Garber

As expected, this six-part series is full of mystery, family drama and rich people hiding secrets. But it’s also surprisingly nuanced, thanks to its A-game performance

It’s mostly based on the fictitious Scribbly Gum island, a picturesque location situated close to Sydney, where property presumably costs more than the gross GDP of several countries and almost all its tiny population belong to the same family.

Like every family they conceal secrets, but given this is a mystery-thriller – executive produced by Nicole Kidman (https://www.theguardian.com/film/nicolekidman), no less
– those secrets are particularly big and juicy.

Across the show’s six-part arc, various skeletons are pried from the closet by a protagonist whose task is to interrupt the status quo and act as an agent of change.

This is Sophie (Teresa Palmer), a likable journalist in her late 30s who inherits a property not from the bank of mum and dad, but from a rather less common depository: the bank of an ex-boyfriend’s relative who barely knew her.

The reason the now-deceased Connie (Angela Punch McGregor) bequeathed it to her is one of several key mysteries, slowly and tastefully revealed.

Another mystery concerns the disappearance many moons ago of a young couple whose baby was found and raised by Connie and her sister Rose (Miranda Richardson).

The baby grew up to be Enigma (Helen Thomson), who, like the rest of the family, has cashed in on the mystery, using it to attract tourists to the island, where they’re welcomed with a pre-rehearsed spiel.

There’s quite a few characters to keep track of, each vividly written and performed.

Assisting Sophie in her investigations is the initially hostile Veronika (Danielle Macdonald, recently great in The Tourist (https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2021/dec/30/the-tourist-review-jamie-dornan-is-intense-in-explosively-entertaining-outback-thriller)), whose parents are Ron (Jeremy Lindsay Taylor) and Connie’s daughter Margie (Susan Prior).

Enigma’s daughter is Grace (Claude Scott-Mitchell), who’s married to Callum (Uli Latukefu), and has recently experienced a traumatic birth.

There’s also Sophie’s ex Thomas (Charlie Garber), who’s faffing about on the island, having been kicked out of his home by his wife.

It is slow and maybe a bit predictable but I am fascinated by programmes that show a different way of life to my British Suburbia.

the80sweregreat · 25/05/2025 15:10

*Veronicka , not Veronica !
unusual spelling

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/05/2025 17:22

I’m loving it

so we have a few names

Connie and rose. Sisters who adopted baby enigma

connie is mum to Margie

connie is now dead and left house to Sophie

Sophie is Thomas ex gf who dumped him

Margie who is Thomas and Veronica mum

veronica very uoset she didn’t get her grandmothers house / prob as divorced and lives with her mum and dad

enigma who is mum to Grace who has just had a baby

but has an unfaithful hubby who slept with Sophie in Thailand - what are the odds !!

turns out that egnima parents alice and jack are actually brother and sister (incest ) and missing /dead and Russians who changed their names as siblings shagging so poor egnima knowing her parents one is actually uncle /aunt to her 🤮 as well as mum /dad

not sure if rose is a mum

If you've read the book, you'll be baffled at the changes to the plot, and changes to/omission of some of the characters. Mind you, if you haven't read the book, you may be baffled by the under-developed flimsiness of some of the characters and by how it all fits together. Huge disappointment: so far all the Lianne Moriarty adaptations have been really a bit rubbish compared to the books.

I’m a bit wary of this because the last TV adaptation of one of her books - Apples Never Fall - was shit. But I love Miranda Richardson, so I’m going to make a start today, will probably watch them all over the next few days as I can’t be bothered to wait a week to watch the next episode.

I agree with you not just the tv adaptations but the books themselves, I wasn’t thrilled about this one and I’ve only just finished it. I love the cast though so I will take a look. Is it all up there?

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/05/2025 20:34

They’ve changed from book ? Why do they do that

OP posts:
OccasionalHope · 25/05/2025 20:58

Jack isn’t necessarily the father, Maybe it was Rose and Connie’s dad wh9 hated the Russians,..

Yes it’s all up on iPlayer and the episodes aren’t too long so won’t take you long to get through but I’m watching the second episode now and it’s less than engrossing.

Who knows - they take a best selling book that the author has spent years on, editors spent hours on, publishers same etc etc and then decide it isnt good enough and change it.

Only managed to get to Ep 3 as the pointless changes spoilt it so much

HappyLols · 25/05/2025 21:07

Mumofteenandtween · 23/05/2025 21:06

I’ve read the book which sadly means I can’t watch it or I will just get cross….

Agree - you will 😁

So. Ive seen the first episode am I ok to talk about the differences in the book which are already blatant to me.

mylovedoesitgood · 26/05/2025 11:15

That's fine @EachandEveryone It's already been shown.

EachandEveryone · 26/05/2025 12:10

You see im in hospital on alot of drugs so i might have missheard it on the audio. Didnt she go out to dinner with her parents in the first chapter, why did she say they were dead? Was she having ivf in the book? Did she shag that bloke in Thailand?

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/05/2025 20:25

Can you watch on iPlayer @EachandEveryone and subtitles ?

sorry in hospital

I don’t think she saw her parevts. They are dead and why she looks at watch each time with a man incase he is the one so she knows the time

OP posts:
EachandEveryone · 26/05/2025 21:19

I am going to watch on iplayer but I feel like I’m going mad or mixing it up with another book, her parents made a big deal about her being an only child and they met at a different fancy restaurant every month. I’ve only just read it. Why would they change it?

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/05/2025 22:19

They often change books

it is annoying as if the story was so good they make a tv series of it - why change details

OP posts:
HappyLols · 27/05/2025 07:55

They killed off Enigma's daughter Laura too (Grace's Mum) and changed "Jake" to "Oscar" - maybe Nicole Kidman is putting a subliminal message there with that name change 😁

Who is Margie's mum in this version as she was Enigma's daughter in the book?

NewAgeNewMe · 27/05/2025 15:03

Found it intriguing. Not seeing the point of the flashbacks with Callum and maybe that’s to come.

busybusybusy2015 · 27/05/2025 19:52

In the book Sophie's parents were her emotional mainstay. Gone from the TV version: dead? If this was intended to give Sophie a tragic backstory, why doesn't it run with that theme? So why erase kind, loving, interesting, emotionally solid, ordinary parents? TV has merged Enigma and Laura into one character (and made Enigma rather younger) - Enigma's husband is ... who ??? Plus my confusion about Alice (confused because I've read the book!)

moto748e · 27/05/2025 20:05

My question is, who were the two young girls in the boat who brought the baby to shore in the storm in the pre-credit sequence? Presumably one of them (the one who stayed in the boat?) is the mother?

TessTickle0 · 27/05/2025 20:28

I am thinking Rose is the mother of Enigma( stupid name)
Surely that isn't the big secret to be told...not sure where the russians went
