Winners only won because they used a cool filter

That’s a fresh take

I doubt it

So where did all the public votes come from? My suggestion was made after chats with friends and colleagues. A number of those expressed distaste at the protesters and did so by giving a vote.

Nothing should be assumed from that other than the protesters weren’t endearing. Just as many people dislike the Stop Oil protesters and would say so, that doesn’t mean that they therefore support global warming. Twatty protesters will damage any cause.

Well that’s the question isn’t it. I don’t know anyone who voted for Israel 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well, I do 🤷‍♀️ Each person had up to 20 votes. I didn’t ask everyone exactly how they voted, but I know that a number of people gave that country a vote and every single one who told me they did cited the protesters as the reason.

It wasn’t an awful song, so it’s hardly surprising it got some votes that way too. There were plenty of songs in the top half of the scoreboard that I thought were poor, and other songs that I thought should have been higher were languishing in the bottom half. My deduction - we all have different musical taste for a start, plus, on occasion, other things affect our voting too.

As an example, I enjoyed the Iceland song, but didn’t like the Estonia one. Iceland came shocking low (to me), Estonia came shockingly high (to me). I’m hardly sitting here fuming or accusing people of cheating. It’s just horses for courses. We don’t all like the same thing, and if people are allowed to vote more than once, then their votes will likely be motivated by a mix of things.

Piggywaspushed · 20/05/2025 19:36

How did you, and all your friends, know about the protests? There was ( deliberately) vanishingly little TV and press coverage .

I can’t answer for all my friends but I saw some online when I googled for Eurovision news. I also saw some on X/Twitter.

Yes, none on TV but news sites referenced protesters in Basel and at the semis. I read a lot about it in various places, some pro the country, some not.

I feel the same way. I think they should be banned from competing.

Which is ironically what may have happened had they actually scored a couple more points and won!

There's more than one way to a destination.

BreatheAndFocus · 20/05/2025 18:07

Or perhaps they got a lot more votes than they would have done in response to the protests? That would be something that many people would do if they saw such protests no matter the country they were aimed at.

I don't buy that for a second.

I think you're right. I also think that if the attempted stage invasion had happened, Israel would have won.

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 20/05/2025 20:43

I can't even remember which country it was, but one song in the first semi-final had a pretend protester who was hauled out by security as part of their act.

I genuinely thought it was a real miscreant at first - shades of the time when Spain had a pitch-invader during their song years ago.

I also thought it was real for a moment in the semi. Great staging!

It didn't work for us with SuRi.

Everyone I know who was in serious objection to their competition boycotted the whole show, therefore didn't vote for anyone.

BreatheAndFocus · 21/05/2025 12:49

Probably why they did so well then.

Do we really think everyone who voted ( especially for Israel but also for other countries) watched?

I'm willing to bet our repeat and especially vituperative visitor didn't watch.

ScribblingPixie · 21/05/2025 16:02

Of course people don't all watch, and they certainly don't all watch it all the way through. A lot of people will watch a little bit then throw a vote or multiple votes for their home country or the woman who got the most clothes off or something that made them laugh. That's the way it's always been.

Piggywaspushed · 21/05/2025 17:34

You miss my point.

Many of the votes come from people who don't watch one single second of it and never have.

I just can't see w way of mending it.
