A combination of their position in the running order and Australia’s NQ last night makes me wonder if Estonia were 10th in SF1 - although I suppose it’s more likely they were 9th with Portugal 10th.

Agree that San Marino and Armenia likely did significantly better than expected. They deserved to based on the performances on the night. They delivered, when other countries didn’t.

That's your 6th negative comment about poor old Australia.

I was really hoping they'd qualify. Not many memorable ditties this year or fun acts to watch. But good if you want to see people propped up on mountains wailing in their own language, or women in leather bodysuits.

I actually really liked Australia's entry. I think that's why I'm really pissed about the performance. They SHOULD have qualified. But the performance didn't merit it unfortunately and I do think it was fair it went out in the end.

Honestly last night was a weird one. I'm gutted Czechia didn't get through.

Agree last night was weird. It’s not that Latvia, Denmark and Armenia are particularly unexpected as qualifiers in themselves. It’s more the fact that all 3 of them qualified that is surprising.

OublietteBravo · 16/05/2025 10:47

I’m also gutted about Czechia.

Absolutely. Estonia's performance was awful. The staging was really lacking. They could have done a lot more with it but didn't. Portugal must have been 9th or 10th. But yeah I think Estonia only just scrapped through. The trouble it had was it was the other gimmicky song in the same semi as Sweden. If you like that type of song, then it was Sweden every time on Tuesday.

Australia relied too heavily on gimmicks if I'm honest - at the expense of vocals (UK have done that often enough). And actually I think Czechia's staging wasn't great. The video is better but it seemed lacking somehow. I can't even put my finger on what. I just wanted 'something' to happen. Instead there's an instrumental and dance routine, which has worked well for the Latin numbers in recent years, but it didn't seem to quite work. His vocals were just about on the right side but only just on his low notes. It was a really upbeat night and with Malta and Finland in the mix too it's hard to stand out as the 'out there' track which Australia and Czechia both really were looking to do but didn't quite hit.

I also think that Georgia and Montenegro performed better than expected and although they didn't qualify I think they raised the bar and probably took a few much needed votes off Australia and Czechia. A different semi on a different day and I do think both would have qualified.

I'm expecting the breakdown to show this semi was really close tbh. Possibly with a really even split between a lot of the other qualifying entries.

Was Estonia the awful macchiatra man?

As a fan of a novelty song, I prefer Estonia. More interesting. I like the backstory of Sweden - it being Finnish Swedes singing about stereotypes, but you wouldn't know that on casual viewing.

They aren’t all great singers, but overall it is fine. Not the worst.

They are all incredible vocalists (have all been leads in major west end musicals).

Fair enough, I thought the woman in pink was clearly weaker in that performance, but maybe nerves

DtotheOG · 17/05/2025 06:29

i don’t like the song, it’s too disjointed.

Choux · 17/05/2025 07:36

So today is the day! I spent a bit of time yesterday watching the videos of a few countries I couldn’t remember plus the favourites. I now have Ich Komme totally stuck in my head. It’s catchy and visually memorable with the huge mic in the air. I saw the performance from three months ago when she won the country competition and it was also in a huge stadium and the performance choreography was unchanged so she is going to be super slick and prepared. I think it could win the public vote. I don’t know how the juries decide their votes but if they judge the song and performance separately before ranking them, she is going to get high performance marks even if they might be sniffy about the song subject matter.

Compared to Finland, France and Austria looked sleepy and dull. They will probably get more jury marks than Finland but I can see several other countries beating them in the public votes. Sweden is fun and catchy but I am not sure it is going to do as well with the public as the bookies think.

So my prediction is:
1 - Finland
2 - France
3 - Sweden

with Latvia and Armenia (Saliva guy) having top 6 finishes. It won’t be a good night for power ballads except for France.
