To feel sorry for Brody (Homeland)

I'm rewatching Homeland for like the third or fourth time. Still picking up bits that I must have missed the first few times round.

Did anyone else just feel really sorry for Brody?

I mean first he's captured, tortured, broken, manipulated and brainwashed and then returned to the USA.

When he tries to refuse to go along with the 'plan' he gets beaten up in a supermarket carpark and kidnapped again

When the CIA finally find out about him they try to use him to help them by turning him into a double agent (surely they should have recognised the deep mental problems he had and got him pychiatric help and support)

Then when the Langley bomb went off he was subject to a manhunt even though he hadn't done it.

Then when they knew he hadn't done it they still wanted to use him to go and kill the leader of the iranian rev guard

Then we he did that for them rather than rescuing him like they said they let Jivadi know his whereabouts so he could capture and hang him to 'prove' his leadership.

I mean seriously - the guy started off as a family man and US marine and was just used and abused by both sides. No-one really tried to get him help or recognise what had been done to him.

Ok, ok I know that would have been very boring tv but still I can't help but feel sorry for him.

DL did an excellent job though of potraying him though.

What did you love about Homeland.

I wasn't keen on the whiney teenage girl although I get what they were trying to potray.

I thought CD did a really good job too showing the vunerability of someone with BPD and how they take rejection badly/ personally and how they get very intense/obsessional about things.

I don't feel that sorry for him as it's still unclear if he did or didn't do certain things! However I would like to rewatch it all again now...

Jazzythegingerninja · 25/04/2025 21:12

Also the bit where he in Caracas being fed drugs on a high rise building site - WTF?!

Spanglebrush · 25/04/2025 21:13

I watched this years ago and I don’t think I’ve enjoyed anything as much as this since. Although every time I’m watching tv and someone opens a car door whether it’s downtown abbey or married at first sight Australia I still half expect the car to blow up.

Bobbybobbins · 25/04/2025 22:53

Homeland was so good! This is making me want to watch it again. The scene where Saul is being chased in Afghanistan is one of the most tense scenes ever!!

JellyBeanSpring25 · 25/04/2025 23:04

Homeland is up there in my all time favourites.

The last scene of the last episode of series 1 when Brody has the bomb on him in the lift - I didn’t breathe.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/04/2025 00:02

yes, he had a shit deal. Peter Quinn too.
I don’t think I could watch Homeland again, it was a bit too intense, didn’t sleep well when we were bingeing it.

I remember that part, though have no recollection whatsoever of why…? It was a very beautifully-lit Caracas highrise…

@MemoriesLikeTheCornersOfMyMind

I'm watching Homeland for the second time.

Yes I felt sorry for Brody and his family. And for T and his family too.

"What did you love about Homeland."

Pretty much everything! Clare Dances' acting is amazing.

Her relationship with Brody, Saul and Quinn were great.

"I wasn't keen on the whiney teenage girl although I get what they were trying to potray."

Goodness yes, cannot agree more. I found her behaviour really annoying but probably quite truthful for a traumatised kid.

"I thought CD did a really good job too showing the vunerability of someone with BPD and how they take rejection badly/ personally and how they get very intense/obsessional about things."

I've no experience of BPD but she seems pretty convincing to me.

I think the way she spins out when stressed seems very realistic.

@Jazzythegingerninja

"Also the bit where he in Caracas being fed drugs on a high rise building site - WTF?!"

I'm currently re-watching season 3 and I can't remember how he gets out of the Carcass high rise.

MumChp · 28/10/2025 00:46

I am rewatching it too. Tbh it gets a bit too crazy for me the last seasons this time. The acting is brillant.
Yes, Brody (and his family) has a shitty deal. I feel sorry for Carrie's baby.

And the Middle East is still burning.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/10/2025 00:53

I just saw this thread in active, was about to comment…but fortunately scrolled down far enough to see I’d already said pretty much what I’d have posted tonight back in April😂

sadmillenial · 28/10/2025 03:30

i still think the showrunners basically lost their nerve, they should have had him detonate the vest at the end of season 1
that would have been a perfect ending

I’ve always thought this too. I loved Homeland, but had this happened I think it would go down as one of the greatest 12 eps of telly ever.

Same here! I was on the edge of my seat as well. It was a brilliant series.

I won’t spoilt it then but it’s ridiculous and results in a Rocky style training montage

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 28/10/2025 11:25

Season 3 is the worst.

Seaskns 1 & 2 are up there with the best TV dramas ever. The episode with the tailor in Gettysburg is absolutely brilliantly nail-biting.

Handeyethingyowl · 28/10/2025 11:33

Yes I feel sorry for Brody. Amazing programme! The best ever for me, possibly.

Soonenough · 28/10/2025 11:39

I think they should have ended it there . Later series just didn't have the same intensity.

Italiangreyhound · 13/11/2025 19:31

Oh no, I think later series were just as good. On fact the relationship between. Quin and Carrie is great.

@MemoriesLikeTheCornersOfMyMind

I've finished watching fir the second time.

I am now watching Prisoners of War, which is the Israeli series Homeland was based on. It's on Amazon Prime.

Tryingatleast · 13/11/2025 19:33

Yes on Brody but actually I felt more for quin- his final scene is still one of my most memorable tv moments!!

Italiangreyhound · 13/11/2025 19:34

Have to believe but Dana in this series is even more horrible than Dana in the American series!

Italiangreyhound · 13/11/2025 22:42

@Tryingatleast I know it's silly, and it's fiction. Buy I feel sad Carrie and Quinn never got together!

Tryingatleast · 13/11/2025 22:45

Italiangreyhound

was very unfair!

momager22 · 11/12/2025 21:19

I’m just catching up with the later seasons.
Peter Quinn being gassed is the most traumatic thing I’ve seen on tv I think.

BlackCatFanClub · 11/12/2025 21:22

He tried to do the right thing in the end! Everytime I watch it I hope Quinn doesn’t get gassed, one of the saddest characters in a tv series for me.
