@MrsLargeEmbodied that's interesting. I was watching it during a period of very high stress and worry in my life when I was struggling to keep calm ( like physically shaking with too much stuff buzzing around my head ) This series helped me relax so much because I was able to fully focus on reading the subtitles whereas I couldn't even concentrate on reading a book at that time.

Babylon Berlin! Sehr SEHR gut!

Oh and if you like something period that's a bit lighter then Seaside Hotel. It's Danish.

I enjoyed Sanditon and loved North and South back in the day (not forgetting of course the BBC Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth!)

I watched North and South only recently, on catch-up, and thought it was excellent. Also liked The Buccaneers; I was surprised as I find Bridgerton just too light and fluffy even for me, but The Buccaneers seems to have a bit of heft to it.

Recommend: sorry if this has already been mentioned, but I can't remember the name, but it was set in a fancy London hotel in WW2, sort of upstairs downstairs vibe with storylines for both staff and guests. Only had one season, which was a pity, I hought. Named after the hotel, I think. Steven Macintosh might have been in it.

I watched the 90s Buccaneers and really liked it. Is the new one on Apple any good?

BeakyFlinders · 30/04/2025 18:27

Belgravia as PPs have said. Luscious.

I enjoy it, but I haven't seen the earlier one.

A place to call home.
Set in Australia after WW2. Great family saga. Loved it.

War and Peace and Catherine the great are good too.

Bridgeston
Gentleman jack

Oh yes, Gentleman Jack is a joy. Scandalous that it got canned.

@LushLemonTart Watch the Seaside Hotel on Channel 4, on demand. It’s about a hotel going through the 20s to 40s with a similar, almost the same, dynamic to Downton Abbey. It is in Danish though. Subtitled thankfully!

Babylon Berlin! Sehr SEHR gut!

Oh yes! A masterpiece imo. Quite tough though, subject matter wise and because of the period and place. But wow, it’s beautifully realised.

The Chaperone stars Elizabeth McGovern and is very good. Its set in 1920d so feel very Downton Abbey.

I think its on Prime
