The law according to Lidia Poet, the Duchess, the Cook of Castamar, Cable Girls - all fabulous subtitled series.

I enjoyed Sanditon and loved North and South back in the day (not forgetting of course the BBC Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth!)

A Place to Call Home is wonderful. It’s an Australian period drama set in the 1950s.

LushLemonTart · 25/04/2025 22:54

Thank you loads I haven't seen.

I enjoyed the Hardacres.

The Moll Flanders mini series from the 90’s with Alex Kingston.

Sense & Sensibility film from around the same time with Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman etc.

HiGunny · 25/04/2025 23:34

I think it's hard to find anything to measure up to Downton but maybe Mr.Selfridge?

LushLemonTart · 26/04/2025 10:49

I've seen Mr selfridge long enough to have forgotten a lot. Thanks for reminding me those who did.

Boardwalk Empire.

I’ve just finished The Forsyte Saga on ITVx and absolutely loved it. They have an “costume collection” bit in drama on the itv app with loads of old classics like Jewel in the Crown and A handful of Dust. Also loved Badehotellet on channel 4 is a real gem - subtitled but you barely notice. I liked the Cook of Castamar too. Bleak House on iPlayer is brilliant.

Seaside hotel on C4 if you are ok with subtitles. I was obsessed with this series and felt bereft when it finished.

Can you get a dance to the music of time anywhere? I adored that adaptation plus brideshead is still magnificent.

Seaside Hotel! I have this on my planner but haven’t seen it mentioned by anyone else! Glad to read a strong recommendation.

I loved the original Forsyte Saga with Eric Porter, Margaret Tyzack, and Nyree Dawn Porter.

Jewel in the Crown is great. I watched it over Easter on ITVX.

If you can find Flambards on YouTube, it’s worth a watch OP. Also, To Serve Them All My Days - set in the 1920s.

Ilovemyshed · 27/04/2025 10:13

The Paradise was also great.
