Anyone else watching this?

I know this has already been on BBC back in 2019, don't know how I missed it! I'm only on episode two and totally gripped, its scarily close to normal life as we are living it now.

The cast are brilliant Emma Thompson, Rory Kinnear Russell Tovey etc, I have quite a few episodes to go but it definitely giving me the feeling that it won't be a happy ending for any of them, or the rest of the world!

Just looked for a thread about this as I'm binge watching on Netflix too.

Gives me "predictive programming" feels and I had to look up when it came out as some of it is so bang on it's spooky.

I binge-watched it. My favorite character is the transhumanist daughter. She played her part brilliantly.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 20/04/2025 15:21

I've rewatched it in the past week having originally seen it in 2019.
It is incredibly apt for the times. Some issues are shoe horned in which led me to an eye roll or two but still incredibly watchable.

I didn't see it first time round. I am now up to the last episode on Netflix. Have really enjoyed it. So very close to what is happening in the world now.

Oneearringlost · 20/04/2025 15:39

Yes, I loved it too.

Also worth a mention is The Lakes, on BBC4, Jimmy McGovern.
Started last week, concludes this week.
Loved it back in 1997, looked for it, it's not been on any streaming platforms at all, so I'm really enjoying it again.

I saw this back in 2019 and have often thought about it since then.

There were certain elements I didn’t love about it as I recall - I think some aspects were a bit heavy handed / OTT which works well for a one-off drama like Black Mirror but I felt the plot could have been developed in a less laboured way over a longer series like this. I think I felt I was being slightly clobbered by the “message” of the series.

That said I did enjoy it and the fact it stayed with me this long is a sign it did something right!

Did they cut the dialogue in the hospital. I’m sure the bbc version said something about the baby looking Chinese?

beasmithwentworth · 20/04/2025 17:20

I watched last night. Yes it still says that the baby looks Chinese

cardboardvillage · 20/04/2025 21:14

Roe V Wade overturned

in the programme it happens in 2025

viking11 · 20/04/2025 23:38

Roe Vs wade.....chilling

crazyday24 · 20/04/2025 23:43

I watched this for the first time on Friday, fantastic acting from all - but scarily reflective of our world at the moment. Russell Tovey lying on the beach ‘dead’ after coming over on the boat particularly hit me. I wonder if they made it him who died, a British person, to get the audience to resonate more? I think it’s far to easier to just look at the stats now but these are people. Made me cry anyway.

FannyBawz · 21/04/2025 20:51

I am rewatching, first time being 2019 and can’t believe what I’m seeing, how accurate…. Walls and trump and Ukraine and transhumanism….

Namechange6578 · 21/04/2025 20:53

I loved this show when I watched it a few years back! Oh my I did cry at times.

Lovewine1975 · 21/04/2025 21:07

@Namechange6578I cried at the end, found it surprisingly moving

Just finished it. Was half way through before I realised it came out pre pandemic and not last year. Even then I was thinking 'this feels like it was written last week, how did they know?' When I realised it's years old it blew my mind. I found it a very disturbing bordering on frightening watch of where the world is and how soon it could get even worse. A strange ending but in keeping with theme once I considered it.

Because his father is Chinese…

Even more topical with the Reform wins this week.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 26/09/2025 15:13

I just watched this. I'm a bit in shock actually. I thought it was a new show, I thought maybe the premise was if covid never happened and then I looked it up and it was 2019. It's unbelievable!! The tech stuff was exaggerated and I don't think some elements will ever be a thing but most of the society changes were chilling and relatable. The speech the gran makes about how we all made the world and we didn't object when machines replaced humans etc actually made me a bit emotional. The final episode was a bit silly IMO, I thought it was a step too far.

LarryIsMyRomanEmpire · 26/09/2025 15:18

It suprised me as Russell T Davies is pro trans and surely this was saying surgery is not a good thing?
