British number four Harriet Dart has apologised for asking the umpire to tell her French opponent to put on deodorant during a first-round loss at the Rouen Open.

Dart lost 6-0 6-3 to Lois Boisson, which included the 28-year-old being swept aside in the opening set in just 28 minutes.
During a changeover in the second set, Dart was heard on the broadcast asking the official: "Can you ask her to put on deodorant? She smells really bad."

I read that earlier Jane, I thought it was not a great comment from Dart ( who was losing, so just comes across as sour grapes all around). She has subsequently apologised- not that she had a lot of choice.

Lois has posted a picture of herself with some deodorant, joking about a collaboration with Dove apparently, so at least she can laugh about it. But it really wasn't very pleasant.

Awful comment from Dart. If she’s not happy with the smell of people’s sweat maybe she should take up competitive knitting or something instead of tennis?

I also think that was a really mean thing for Dart to say - I can’t imagine that many people would be very fragrant after playing competitive sport - I’ve never really warned to her for some reason and this hasn’t helped

She's lucky the stadium was empty really, and few heard her say it- since she was playing a French player, in France. And it's not like she can claim a 'lost in translation ' moment either- pretty clear what she meant.

Unfortunately, I can see this becoming one of those things where the villain becomes the victim- poor Harriet, subjected to horrible comments on social media , and she didn't mean it. And her mental health is suffering. Etc.

But maybe I'm just getting a bit old and jaded

This doesn’t reflect well on Harriet at all - and unfortunately I think she has some form for not behaving well on court.

The players don’t get that close in tennis anyway, I’m sure she could have coped with any smell for the short time they are near each other.

She's played mixed doubles- you're not telling me that blokes smell better! Or would she not dare insult a man? (who she is not losing to).

I doubt anyone smells that bad while they’re playing unless they haven’t showered beforehand. I would think it’s when they start to cool down afterwards that the pong sets in. I may be wrong though.
