Recommend me things to watch when my children are in the room

I am about to start some medical treatment that will leave me tired and unwell. Looking for recommendations for things to watch while looking after my children, age 7 and 10, but not aimed at them. Like most kids these days they have their tablets, so would much rather watch their cartoons and gaming than anything I try and engage them with. They will get out and about with family too.

So series without sex and swearing, or documentaries that don't involve murder or death induced natural disasters etc. We all like things like gladiators, masked singer, is it cake and geography related documentaries. They aren't good with death and peril, so something like dr who is a no, as are wildlife documentaries where the cute fluffy creature is torn to pieces by predators.

I do love pointless 😀

Not watched any of Downton, so that should be plenty to binge.

There are a few scenes in Downton not suitable for children

one question - quiz with Claudia Winkleman channel 4

Good luck with your treatment.

Game shows are a good choice - Catchphrase, Countdown, The Chase, Impossible etc.

To be honest, live TV is probably best for this when the kids are around, if it's on in the daytime on live telly you can almost guarantee it will be fine.

Old Enough on Netflix is fun, my DC6 when a bit younger sometimes used to catch bits when I was watching it and enjoyed it even though they couldn't read the subtitles to understand the speech.

Cooking shows?

Shows about dogs, of which there are loads now, like The Dog House etc.

Just looked up old enough. That sounds great!

Great British Sewing Bee. I can barely thread a needle but always enjoy that.

The Detectorists. Lovely gentle but far from anodyne humour. Beautifully observed, written, acted, directed, filmed, you name it.

Poirot, ITV. If available anywhere, the BBC Miss Marples with Joan Hickson.

Hope your treatment goes well. Flowers

Thank you. Haven't watched any of sewing been, so that should prove bingeworthy

Gladiators!

Oh yes the detectorists is lovely. Watched it after recommendation on mumsnet

vincettenoir · 13/04/2025 19:00

My dd is into Deal or No Deal and Is It Cake?

SunMootStars · 13/04/2025 19:54

Detectorists is fab but I wouldn’t watch that with kids as the language is pretty bad… a lot of fucks etc.
IMDb is your friend to review any shows, and has a helpful parents guide noting how much/if any swearing or sex/nudity scenes etc.

I'd binge watch Horrible Histories because your DC will enjoy it and even if they've seen it before it's worth another watch and it's educational.

Not to mention the cast are excellent and quite watch worthy 😀

Needlenardlenoo · 13/04/2025 20:16

Have you seen Ghosts? They did a fine job of including adult stuff with absolutely nothing inappropriate for children.

Failing that, Malory Towers on CBBC is pretty good!

Needlenardlenoo · 13/04/2025 20:18

Pottery Throwdown? Sort Your Life Out?

Needlenardlenoo · 13/04/2025 20:19

DD introduced me to The Floor is Lava. In a similar vein to the Is It Cake thing (possibly same production company).

LilacPony · 13/04/2025 20:25

Celebrity Bear Hunt on Netflix was really good

CountryQueen · 13/04/2025 20:57

I have already watched it twice. Love that show so much, but would've put it on in front of a 7 year old I think.

There are quickly a few deaths, but generally stupid ones, so that's a good shout.

I have, but could easily watch it again. Not sure how the kids would cope with Fanny falling out of the window every day. The USA one is a lot more unsuitable.

I love Susan Calman's Grand Day Out.

SociableAtWork · 15/04/2025 06:18

Can thoroughly recommend The Durrells - about author Gerald Durrells family and life when he was growing up on Corfu, and starting a little zoo. Gorgeous weather, scenery and lighthearted story lines.

On Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon Prime and YouTube.

Hope it all goes well and you make a speedy recovery.

There's a lot of swearing in Only Murders in the Building! Wouldn't recommend watching that with young children in the room!

Gundogday · 15/04/2025 11:52

Mallory Towers - Have you watched this? I watched the first series when I was poorly years ago and loved it. Maybe something you can watch with your children. There’s been more series since.

Another thought was old classic films - Roman Holiday, Easter parade, parent trap, Whistle down the wind etc. and with the kids, Chitty Chitty bang bang, High School Musical, Mary poppins etc. ,
