What's new on Apple TV good enough to take up a 3 month cheap deal?

IwantToRetire · 11/04/2025 20:49

I had Apple for about 3 months last year, but found by the end of that 3 months I wasn't interested enough to renew at full price.

Have now been offered another 3 months at a low rate and wondered if there is anything new that has been recently added and is worthwhile.

I like SciFi (but not monsters, actual SciFi!) crime and detection, historical dramas, social and political thrillers. Have a bit of a humour by pass Sad so not likely to respond well to comedies.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I have a few days before I have to take up the offer, although I see that on the UK web site it is offering 3 months at £2.99pm.

Already seen Severance and Slow Horses?

gollyimholly · 12/04/2025 05:15

Shrinking

In addition to Severance and Slow Horses
I've had Ted Lasso recommended to me loads but I just can't get into it.

westisbest1982 · 12/04/2025 07:43

I'm enjoying Your Friends and Neighbours, which started yesterday.

It doesn't appeal to me, but you may like Silo.

Disclaimer is recommended if you want to see some terrible acting.

Workoutrage · 12/04/2025 07:44

Apart from Silo and Severance not a lot.

Pigeonqueen · 12/04/2025 07:46

Blackbird. Very disturbing as based on true crime but it’s amazing. Best thing we’ve watched in ages. The acting from the two main characters is brilliant.

IwantToRetire · 12/04/2025 20:00

Yes I watched Silo - isn't there going to be another series.

I couldn't get into Severance! Ditto Slow Horses and Ted Lasso.

I dont think I every saw Blackbird. So that's one for the list.

Friends and Neighbours sounds like I might get into that, and if just released all episodes must be shown with 3 months. So that's 2 for the list.

Not sure about Shrinking, as I dont seem to respond to tv comedies, but at least that is another new one.

Blitz looks like something I would try out.

There is something called Surface which I dont remember but looks like a 2nd series.

See that Blitz is a film and there is a consipiracy film as well.

So thanks to all suggestions.

Maybe the monthly cost of less than buying an espresso in a cafe I should just say why not and thanks for the offer.

Just come back to say I did sign up and haven't had time to even find some of the suggestions on here. Is it just me but are all these streaming services hard to navigate?

Just adding these comments for anyone else new or renewing apple.

So made a big mistake in watching Napoleon (film) which apple recommended to me(?). Great if you like well filmed battle scenes but most of the dialogue was so slight you would be hard pressed to believe it starts with the French Revolution and finishes at Waterloo. I think I've had that reaction to Ridley Scot films a few times.

I watched Blitz also a film and in a way it was really touching in trying to present (mainly) Londoners being all jolly good souls in WWII as though some 50s children film. And as the main story is about a young boy separated from his mother and trying to find her (and without sounding like some mad patriot) quite appropriate for VE day!! But some quite disturbing scenes so not sure for suitable for very young. And quite convincingly scary scences of being bombed. Beautifully filmed by Steve McQueen and lots of big names in the case including Paul Weller!

Just finished watching Sugar which I had bookmarked from my last 3 month trial.

I thought it was just going to be like a homage (I think that's the word) to all those stylish black and white lone private detective films, where an apparently a hard bitten man always ends up help some damsel in distress but turns out she isn't quite what he thought.

But it turned out to be something a bit different.

Has anyone else watched, and if so what did you think?

I really liked Tehran. Political thriller but not stodgy.

IwantToRetire · 01/05/2025 21:08

Thanks - I like political thrillers!

Is the Studio any good.

Or just a bit too pleased with itself?

OP posts:
martinisforeveryone · 01/05/2025 21:19

Not seen Sugar or The Studio.

Have you seen The New Look? I really rated that.

It's ostensibly about the designer Christian Dior and his family's story during WWII. Very moving. But much wider than that and also a lot about Coco Chanel and the German occupation of Paris and more.

Sid9nie · 01/05/2025 21:22

Bad Sisters is very good for the first series. Wouldn't bother with the second.

IwantToRetire · 01/05/2025 21:39

Its funny isn't it how some tastes can be in commone and some not.

I lasted one episode of the New Look. Hmm

I cant remember if I watched Bad Sisters - so will look it up.

I really enjoyed The shining Girls with Elizabeth Moss. Hard to describe without spoiling the story. Excellent watch.
Also The Crowded Room - another great watch. In my opinion of course!

newfriend05 · 01/05/2025 23:42

Lessons in chemistry
Palmer ( film)

chattyness · 01/05/2025 23:50

We signed up on a cheap deal for 3 months but struggling to find anything decent, we don't like sci fi, which there seems to be a lot of. Couldn't get into Severance or Ted Lasso or Slow Horses. Bad Sisters was dull AF , much prefer the original version. We are enjoying Your friends and neighbours but that's about it so far, very disappointed. We will probably never bother with it again after the 3 months is up

IwantToRetire · 02/05/2025 01:04

Yes I enjoyed, not sure if that is the right word, the Shining Girls. Very engrossing.

Dont think I saw the Crowded Room so will add to my list.

Lessons in chemistry - I'll have a think about that!

Palmer ( film) - really enjoy a good film. To have a start, middle and finish.

But have a bit of an aversion to Justin Timberlake. Maybe I can pretend it isn't him.

Do you scifi? If so Silo is brilliant IMO! Also Constellation.

And I quite enjoyed the Morning Show. One of those US shows which is maybe a bit too pleased with itself, but interesting as it is quite contermporary about the media and cancel culture.

If you like police crime dramas Criminal Record is good.

No in my post I said I don't like sci fi 😆 I've tried the morning show and wasn't impressed but I may go back and give it another go.

I was hoping there might be some good dramas or comedies from Australia or New Zealand but haven't found a single one.

NurseButtercup · 02/05/2025 13:55

I've signed up for the three month cheap deal,
I'm currently watching:

Government Cheese
The Studio
Your friends & Neighbours
Dope Thiefs

I enjoyed watching & recommend any of the following:
Pachinko (I watched season 1 but missed season 2)
Drops of God
Presumed Innocent
Disclaimer

Yes I've seen Sugar! It really pivoted, didn't it? We enjoyed it and took the twist with good humour, then thought back to the clues dropped in previous episodes. It was fun and entertaining, but not deep or impactful.

rosegoldwatcher · 02/05/2025 18:27

I love sci-fi, OP.
Would recommend Foundation (2 seasons) and Dark Matter (9 episodes.)

I have recently binged through Masters of the Air (WW2 - American pilots based in Norfolk) and the accompanying documentary - The Bloody Hundredth.

The best thing I've seen, by far, was Disclaimer!

Some of the style of filming was a bit much, but overall it was an interesting plot line.

And definitely thought they are hoping for second series with how it ended with new clues being revealed!

Have you seen Foundation OP? It's a pretty awesome sci-fi series on Apple, the production values are incredible.

I’ve also enjoyed Dope Thief recently and something called Surface. And a pretty silly but immensely enjoyable thing called Servant which you’ll either love or hate.

I love Apple TV. May I just say I cannot for the life of me understand how anyone could “not get into Slow Horses.” Shock
