A new revenge-thriller called Reunion is heading to the BBC, and it's about to be your new TV obsession.

on mon and Tue for two weeks 7&8 and 14&15

Led by Matthew Gurney alongside 2021 Strictly Come Dancing (https://www.cosmopolitan.com/uk/entertainment/g19859372/strictly-come-dancing-line-up/) winner Rose Ayling-Ellis (https://www.cosmopolitan.com/uk/entertainment/a64231762/code-of-silence-release-date-itv/), and Bad Sisters star Anne-Marie Duff,

The four-part drama follows the journey of Daniel Brennan (Gurney), "a deaf man determined to right his wrongs while unravelling the truth behind the events that led him to prison".

A key feature of the series is its bilingual nature, incorporating both British Sign Language (BSL) and spoken English.

It was written by William Mager, a deaf writer from Sheffield.

Speaking of his character, Gurney said: "Reunion is an amazing storyline and is completely different from my previous work. My character Brennan is on a wildly different journey than that portrayed by normal deaf lives, this portrays a man who is hated within the deaf community."

He added: "It shows how deaf people react and act on screen in an honest and authentic way. We are different to hearing actors, we are so much more visual storytellers, it's not about relying on sound it’s about using your eyes and seeing what is going on in the story."

The synopsis says: "Reunion is an emotional thriller of revenge and redemption following the journey of Daniel Brennan, played by Matthew Gurney (Name Me Lawand, Theatre Ad Infinium), a deaf man determined to right his wrongs while unravelling the truth behind the events that led him to prison.

"Brennan embodies the struggle of a man caught between two worlds, unable to fully integrate into the hearing world and shunned by his closest friends and the wider deaf community following his heinous crime.

Amidst this isolation, Brennan's only meaningful relationship is with his estranged daughter Carly, played by Lara Peake (How to Have Sex, Rivals), who he has not had any contact with since his arrest over a decade ago."

Reunion cast
Matthew Gurney, Lara Peake, Anne-Marie Duff, Eddie Marsan and Rose Ayling-Ellis lead the cast of William Mager's new drama.
Below is a full cast list:

Oh my god Ray

ohcrikeynotagain · 15/04/2025 22:20

That was an ending .

So glad I didn't binge

Excellent drama series

Oh. His parents Weren't deaf. I got the impression they were as didn't talk to him e1 only signed

Many sign and talk to the deaf

Oh god. That's why Ray is dead. He helped monroe to abuse other boys to stop him doing it to him anymore

And why he stabbed him

So tech he did kill him and did deserve to be in prison

But due to what montoe did

His last speech came from the heart about people not listening to deaf people 😢

I get why she tried to shoot him. Thank god she failed

As he got his apology - long overdue but hopefully will release his demons

While his daughter wanted to take it further. He said no

Hopefully he won't be charged and she will say she shot the shotgun - which she did - but as he bought it will he go back inside ?

A few loose ends as we don't know what will happen to them both

I'm glad I did try this again as was very moving and well acted

and of course he didnt hear when they told him to drop his weapon!

Brennan’s daughter fired a gun at an unarmed, elderly man, having forced her way into his home. I don’t see how she can avoid a lengthy prison sentence for that.

MetaDaughter · 15/04/2025 23:18

But the man phoned the police before she fired the gun. They can’t automatically know anyone fired at him. They would need his evidence to charge her with … attempted murder(?). And really, if you were him, would you want to facilitate a prosecution where every single evil thing you’d ever done - as a teacher at a school for vulnerable children - would be revealed? If that were a possibility he might find it wiser to claim the gun went off by accident. That he made a mistake when he called the police - was never under threat and wishes to withdraw his complaint …

The police were probably outside when the gun was fired. Monroe is old, he may not care about muck being raked up, plus he seemed to be denial about his crimes. Besides, simply being in possession of an unlicensed gun means a minimum 5 year sentence, and residue will be on her hands.

MetaDaughter · 16/04/2025 02:05

How would an armed police unit have got there so quickly? And didn’t they appear over the horizon after the two had exited the house? He walked away looking in the direction the police would arrive from, and didn’t see them. (I watched it several days ago so may be misremembering details.) But also - if they had already surrounded the house before the gun went off, they would have stormed in the second they heard it, surely?

He’d care if he has any living younger relatives. (Maybe he doesn’t?)

No denying that she fired the gun. But there’s a slight difference between shooting a man’s china - maybe by accident - and deliberately shooting at him with intent to kill. Particularly in fiction. Might be a tasty bit of advocacy for a second season.

Are there any deaf judges? This is something I ought to know. I don’t believe I’ve encountered any.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 16/04/2025 05:40

but the police were looking for him anyway
although why did the probation officer leave?

butterpuffed · 16/04/2025 16:46

Yes, the Police were looking for him
because he'd most likely missed the 5pm deadline to turn up at the Station and knew where he was because Monroe had rung the Police at the beginning of their visit .

Maybe they hadn't surrounded the house as they didn't know a gun was involved until they heard it .

That was really very good , the ending made me cry .

I think the probation officer left because he had enough. The other probation officer’s words had stung and he decided to reassess his life.
Also he had given the information to the Ann Marie Duff character which was probably a sackable offence
Or
The police officer who gave him the footage of the police interview had said they missed him in the police and there was still a place there if he was interested.
Perhaps he went back “to make the difference” that he had joined up for in the first place before becoming disillusioned and cynical.

Umanresources · 16/04/2025 18:50

I cried through most of the last episode. I felt so sad for him, finding about his wife a week later and his poor daughter on her own. The speech she gave about having to explain what the doctor had to say to her mum was so moving. I was glad I was on my own then. Then the speech by Miri made me sob. I’m going to have to watch the last one again; it was so good. I’m so glad I went back to try it again.

purpleme12 · 16/04/2025 18:56

Really powerful

Not least the last scene

I think Lara Peake was outstanding in it
I've never seen her before but I think she was the best thing about it

tennissquare · 16/04/2025 19:39

Yes I thought Lara was excellent, she was Daysee in Rivals too.

purpleme12 · 16/04/2025 19:40

Interesting

I've not seen that. Is it good?

Rivals is great if you have Disney plus and esp if you can remember the 1980's! It's about as far as you can get from Reunion. She is a very versatile actor.

purpleme12 · 16/04/2025 20:09

Will put it on my list to try

Umanresources · 16/04/2025 20:19

Lara Peake was excellent, but I thought everyone was great. I think if you forget you are not watching a documentary, it makes it so much more powerful. It’s left me feeling very unsettled and it won’t be leaving me any time soon.

theresnoonequitelikegrandma · 16/04/2025 21:50

Finally watched the final episode tonight. Such a powerful watch and they didn’t just tie up all the loose ends and let everyone live happily ever after (apart from the evil ones, of course!) but left you to wonder what would happen next. Amazing Tv for once!

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/04/2025 22:58

I don’t like wondering will happen next

woukd have prefered then to write on screen and say after enquiry both were let off with a warning - aa no proof he bought the gun or be back in prison
