I get that he over egged a not very traumatic situation. But instead of getting cross and speaking down to him, She could have just used the letter to probe more. Rather than smirk. So ‘how close are you to your sister’. ‘How was your Mum after?’. And then they have a conversation. She’s on the attack all the time.

She’s not wrong though. Eliot shared something really low risk - he was a kid at the time, it happened mostly to someone else, he wasn’t responsible for anything in the situation, it all worked out in the end. Was it sad? Did it leave an impact on his character? Yeah probably. But it’s not a particularly vulnerable thing to share - there is no shame, no long term grief or loss, no mistakes to admit. He could have been a bit braver really.
