Has anyone else watch all episodes of this new crime drama?

I don't usually like family crime dramas, as they are fairly predictable.

I was quite taken with this, but I think for the wrong reason!

What did anyone else think?

(There is an existing thread for those who are watching at tv pace and dont want to read any spoilers!)

BBC One - This City Is Ours

All Michael knows is crime, until he falls in love. Now he has something to lose.

Lots of intelligent discussion here but, lowering the tone, half the time I was distracted by the perfect nails that all the women had all the time (even in prison).

And I was gobsmacked when I heard Hannah Onslow's real accent.

Just looked up a video- she’s mad cockney, I can’t believe that! That’s crazy! I also didn’t realise that she’s the woman in This is Going to Hurt whose baby ends up in the ICU after Dr. Adam messes up.

watching with my loins

Fantastic - I am sure many of us have been more than a little influenced by our loins when watching something and then later converting that into some cool analytic point about whatever it was.

I don't understand why he didn't kill Jamie either. He killed the dad, who he supposedly loved and respected, yet somehow couldn't bring himself to kill Jamie who he clearly despised and had zero respect for.

I thought he might not have killed Jamie because of the baby (Jamie's baby).
He wanted to be a father himself and killing Janie would be like killing his future self.

The police didn't seem to care too much.
Ronnie goes to Spain.
Doesn't come back
Family go over by plane, return by van
Ronnie is dead.

Should they exhume the body?

Totally gonna happen in s2. I thought it was a plot hole that they didn’t cremate him.

No judgement here. I spent time yesterday watching a video on Insta of Laura Aikman being transformed into Rachel 😂

I enjoyed the plot, binged it in a couple of days. I just really wish that they had used actresses that were either from Liverpool or were good enough actors to do a convincing accent. The actress from derry girls and the one from gavin and stacey were horrendously bad, almost rendering it unwatchable. So that really spoiled it for me which is a shame as the storyline was good

Are you Scouse @XiCibecause as a Londoner I thought that they were excellent 😂

Yes I am. Believe me, they were terrible. I was cringing as I was watching, and everyone I know who has watched it said the same.

Was Michael's accent good? 😭 as a londoner i thought it was 🙈

The one from gavin and stacey was so good in that that I tuned her out on this show. She'll always be known as 'sonia 🙄' for me now

XiCi · 06/04/2025 14:12

Yes the actor that played Michael is from Liverpool 😊

LambriniBobInIsleworthISeesYa · 06/04/2025 15:13

@XiCi that’s fair enough then, you’re the expert. I’m from East London and can always tell a fake Cockney. It seems to be an accent that everybody think that they can do, but they definitely can’t… all goes a bit Dick Van Dyke. Actually a good example of this is the Scouse/Cockney crossover in Rocket Man where Stephen Graham plays Dick James… absolutely awful. Dick James was from the East End and there must have been a cockney actor who could have played the part.

Fellow east londoner, agree that you can always tell

The funniest thing I've seen was this one guy who was playing a terrorist from London, on Madam Secretary - he was clearly American or something

😭😭 it's the worst thing I've ever seen omg

Xcellentaligat · 10/04/2025 20:00

That was brilliant! I don’t care about the accents, they were good enough for me. What always surprises me about these dramas, is how much I end up liking the criminals. I saw that coming with Banksy and Ricardo, and I was bloody cheering that he’d knocked him over and then run over him. 😳

piscofrisco · 10/04/2025 20:52

I really enjoyed this. My only critique was how annoyingly slowly Michael moved at all times. It would take him hours to do anything at that rate. And also how onvisoutno teas to everyone that Jamie was a total liability and yet the family didn’t simply tell him to get back in his box and stay there.

IwantToRetire · 10/04/2025 21:27

Yes I commented earlier in the thread that it was like everytime he moved he was thinking of a good pose for a fashion shoot.

just finished the final 2
very good series
loved the ending
Laura Aikman has redeemed herself after Gavin and Stacey

I have binged over three days and really enjoyed it.

@IwantToRetire Elaine says :

“You know you killed us both, you’re lucky I have a grandchild but know this, I will come to despise you Michael, both of you, this isn’t the last of it, that’s all I am saying”

I just watched the end now and I had subs on

I needed the subtitles on all the way through 😂

I thought that she was still supposed to be Irish and didn’t think anything of it, looks like the accent change went over my head then!

Yes the actor that played Michael is from Liverpool 😊

He is a fantastic actor I think he was outstanding.
And Bobby Schofield (and his hair) deserves his own award for being feral.
The only local actress played Michael’s girlfriend. It’s a shame because the city is packed full of actresses.
The one thing I struggled with is how a man from Sheffield ending up running a drugs empire in the city. He would stand out like a sore thumb, and I assume if he had begun his career in the 90’s, would not have been welcomed.
I do get it’s a drama, and not a documentary though.
Also, I can’t think of a girl below certain age in the city with big funds would wear Reiss trousers for an occasion.
Just an observation…..

ICantBeDoingWithThat · 19/04/2025 13:16

I thought the accents were good, but do scousers really call each other "lad" so much?
I have heard girl and queen a lot, but not lad. It used to be la, surely. 🤔

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 19/04/2025 14:18

a man from Sheffield

yes definitely @PeggyMitchellsCameo I wondered this, I mainly wondered if Stephen Graham was first choice and busy to be honest!

You must mean Jamie's girlfriend (Darci Shaw) because Hannah Onslow is from Essex - she has a really strong accent.
