This City Is Ours - BBC iPlayer binge watch ie spoiler thread

Has anyone else watch all episodes of this new crime drama?

I don't usually like family crime dramas, as they are fairly predictable.

I was quite taken with this, but I think for the wrong reason!

What did anyone else think?

(There is an existing thread for those who are watching at tv pace and dont want to read any spoilers!)

BBC One - This City Is Ours

All Michael knows is crime, until he falls in love. Now he has something to lose.

I’m just about to start the final episode - and already wondering what I’ll do with my life once I’ve finished the series.

Really surprisingly excellent. Having slogged my way through the disappointing S3 of Gangs of London I wasn’t really in the mood for more of the same - but this felt very different somehow.

I did guess the ‘Marnie’ twist with Diana and her mother almost from the start - but it was nevertheless affecting and interesting. And actually a valid attempt to comprehend why someone with her outward aspirations would be attracted to Michael.

And the storytelling … The group dance and its terrifying repetition. The absolutely perfect choice of music - some of the best and wittiest juxtapositions I’ve heard on any show. The clothes. The costume designer deserves many prizes. As does every single one of the female cast members.

Edited

Just loved the whole series, casting and Macbeth influences were brilliant.

Talking about the clothes I loved all Michael’s things but absolutely want his grey Boss raincoat for my DS

There were quite a few Macbeth "Easter eggs" but it didn't really echo the plot. Michael kills the "king". Michael's (begins with an M) best friend is called Banksey (Banquo) and Banksey's son's name begins with F (as in the play where it's Fleance).

There is Duffy (Macduff) After the Michael kills Ronnie he tells Diana that they should go to bed so that they don't seemed to have knowledge of the murder. Michael uses a dagger-like knife. Blood is smeared.

Ronnie's son wants to take over (in the play Malcolm is named heir), Michael thinks it should be his (Michael's right.). I think the Amigos stand for the witches. Before the cage fight the ref says they should say "enough" if they want to give in. (... and damned be him that first cries, “Hold, enough!”).

Near the end Michael is looking out from a tall building. (Castle in the play).

Sorry to be nerdy here, I'm a sad git! There may be other references that I've missed.

Thanks!

But all I can say as someone who isn't that familiar with MacBeth that it was still worth watching.

But do wonder if in trying to make the MacBeth links, in fact the tv plot suffered as in plot twist terms some of it didn't make sense.

Doesnt lady Macbeth have visions too? Like Diana in her flashbacks and I think one is washing blood off her hands?

MayIDestroyYou · 04/04/2025 21:45

Yes, but it’s in relation to her own childhood drama rather than Michael’s. (At least, we encounter that memory before Michael’s activities bring more blood to her door.)

Unfortunately if there’s a S2 the outlook isn’t great for her if they continue the Macbeth theme.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 04/04/2025 22:47

Just finished it. My partner turned round and said ‘it was all a bit Shakespeare wasn’t it’!

I loved it though, liked the ending and all the acting was great, wasn’t too fussed for Julie Graham though like her in general. The last couple of things I’ve seen her in she’s played a baddie’s wife. Thought Saoirse-Monica Jackson was great after recently watching Derry Girls.

Italiangreyhound · 04/04/2025 23:04

It's Ok. Not bad. I preferred Protection on ITV.

MayIDestroyYou · 05/04/2025 04:18

I watched Protection a couple of weeks ago - but just had to go to ITV to remind myself of what it was. Wholly forgettable. And unconvincing - to me, at least. Really strange to find myself disappointed in Siobhan Finneran - she’s so brilliant but seemed miscast there.

I watched the whole thing and was gripped, but I feel... disappointed

The ending was silly imo

I felt like it tried to cover a lot of themes and do a lot of things which took away from the very solid storyline

Michael going to Jamie's mum was genius and very believable. Jamie losing in the fight and struggling with the sheer embarrassment of being able to be his fathers heir was bang on

But I thought that Sonia from gavin and stacey blowing everything up was weak 🙄

The woman from derry girls just hanging around that family 😭😭 made zero sense and was clearly done so that she could steal the baby

So many references to michaels partner and the bloody knife but she didn't end up stabbing anyone, dunno, it was all a bit of a mess at the end

Still, I enjoyed it overall and Michael is the hottest man 🤭🥰

BeyondtheBeyond · 05/04/2025 09:28

I enjoyed the last episode. I thought it was very tense.
I was shouting at Michael to get in the car and drive away at the end.

MayIDestroyYou · 05/04/2025 09:28

She’d stabbed her father to death, @mumofoneAlonebutokay!

Yeah, that storyline just didn't go anywhere 😭

She stabbed her dad, had this whole build up of her relating to Michael and wanting to tell him, just for him to be like 'okay' 🤭

Then she pulled the knife on Jamie and then had to drop it because a gun was pulled on her

Dunno just didn't seem thought out 😕

Ambitious project but missed the mark on a lot of things for me

Banksy killing the amigo at the end was nice I guess

Thank you! My son and I love this series, in fact he was the one who alerted me to it. We have a lot of fun discussing the Macbeth (it helps that I teach it!) hints and we're also inclined to break into some line dancing and singing "In the House of Bamboo." I've started calling him "soft lad".

I agree. Thought it might be as gripping as Broadchurch, but as predictable as The Bay.

Siobhan Finneran in Alma’s not Normal however, fabulous.

I loved Shakespeare at school, I think i might get some of his plays to read over the summer 🙌

🤭 I'm literally thinking in a scouse accent lad

The police didn't seem to care too much.
Ronnie goes to Spain.
Doesn't come back
Family go over by plane, return by van
Ronnie is dead.

Should they exhume the body?

IwantToRetire · 05/04/2025 20:33

Even though I didn't and still dont get the MacBeth references (and am not bothered!) these series is way better than Protection. Which I did enjoy but was very much 9pm fodder.

But have to add, and already admitted it, that I thought "michael" was almost embarrassingly awful. Seemed to think acting was adopting one model post after another. Which was a shame as someone with a better range of expression might have helped make him seem the significant character his is meant to be.

But was not only wooden but came over as thick as a plank.

I think the police did catch on, though. Wasn’t there a conversation about Ronnie's passport not being used to re-enter the UK? A second series is a dead cert, so some story lines will be kept open.

They caught on but nothing much happened after that.

I thought that his scene with the police officers was a bit weird

Like he was just sat listening to them chat shit for a lot longer than a normal person would, let alone a criminal

I liked him, but i was partly watching with my loins tbh 🤭 - I think his character was a bit all over the place. Why wouldn't he just shoot Jamie 🙄, so silly

RancidRuby · 05/04/2025 21:39

I don't understand why he didn't kill Jamie either. He killed the dad, who he supposedly loved and respected, yet somehow couldn't bring himself to kill Jamie who he clearly despised and had zero respect for.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 05/04/2025 21:45

If I was rewriting this, I'd have him kill Jamie and then go to war with Sean bean whilst negotiating with the amigos, maybe involving the Amsterdam lot that they were all so afraid of 🤭

You’re right this is a flaw!

The only thing I can think of is that he knew Ronnie’s death would be covered up but if he publicly executed Jamie he ran the risk of arrest and prison. He was clearly scared of a long sentence
