A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix, Viki, Amazon Prime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama - the best are listed below.

The previous thread is here. Our list is cumulative & includes previous threads’ recommendations and favourites. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. On genre categories, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. This tonal chaos is part of kdrama’s charm. We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

This article stirred two emotions in me. Absolute disgust with South Korean cultural misogny, and admiration for the courage and persistence of some women & groups in seeking judicial fairness and equality for women.

Of my Korean friends, only one is married to a fellow Korean. She says he is a wonderful, gentle man, a committed Christian and goose fathering for their DD. One only goes back annually for the food, as she doesn't cook, and the other refuses to ever set foot in Korea again.

Just finished Buried Hearts and not sure how I feel about the ending. Do you think there will be a second series?

Thoroughly depressing. It’s so easy to romanticise SK because of the great dramas, music and food but I certainly wouldn’t want to live there or bring up my daughters there.

feather, there is speculation that the BH ending makes a second series probable. It needs it imho. Perhaps Disney might fund it?

2nd year in a row when K-dramas are not doing much for me. I start and ditch very regularly. I am hoping Drs @ Yulji will fix the mood.
It’s the particular genre of literature which is keeping me busy. Currently enjoying historic, western romance.

It’s GCSEs on our end but I am looking forward to our holiday afterwards. Unfortunately SK didnt make the cut.

Jin i am in the same mood - nothing is really grabbing me much at the moment.

I have just started When The Phone Rings which I had always meant to binge once it was all out but kind of forgot about it. Did someone on the thread comment at the time about the hilarity of a sign in english in episode 1 that read 'welcome to the birthday party' 🤣🤣 think I will work that into the decor of my next party

DD has some GCSEs this year (in their school, they do most of the Paper 1s in 4th year to get them out of the way) and she struggles with revising so I'm doing a thing called Body Doubling where I sit with her while she works. So, I'm using the time wisely and trying to write comments on the spreadsheet for all the dramas I've watched recently as I love it when others do it - @polkettle - you're very good with the comments!

I’m still catching up on Buried Hearts. I’m at the scene where evil Yeom has gone back to his house to meet with the Elder after the rooftop brazier scene. He stalks into the room angry and spoiling for a fight. Camera pans back and I get a shot of his… slippers. 😆 I get the shoes off cultural thing but it still tickles me, especially when you have the chaebol women at home in classy couture and their fluffy slippers.

That always makes me chortle too!

Also just finished Buried Hearts , I don't think there's enough for a second series. I'd rather PHS washed his hair and went off to do a nice fluffy romcom.

I have another 40 mins of ep 16 left and an early start tomorrow. The infuriating ending will have to keep. I have to agree with Bettys’ main sentiment here. I much preferred PHS in Happiness. A proper haircut asap, please. 🙏

DH and I have just started Karma on Netflix which is pretty good. I've also been watching a KBL called Business as Usual - only a couple of eps out so far.... I've definitely been starting and dropping more series than I used to - so much tv not enough time....

Manwha fans! The live action of First Night With The Duke is out in June!

We’ve finished Tangerines and we enjoyed it but I did find the second half over sentimental.
Also there was virtually no humour that I noticed - apart from that scene when Kim Seon Heo is chasing the bus and gets held up in a swarm of teenagers.
Normally even K dramas about serial killers bung in the odd humorous scene.
We enjoyed the pageant of Korean history, the scenery was stunning and the acting top notch but it wasn’t one of my faves.
