Really in the mood for some good documentaries but there are so many to choose from! I have Netflix, prime and Disney. I’m looking for some recommendations please ☺️

OP posts:

Can’t get out of my head that the bodies of those two men are still on that mountain.
Very upsetting when Kate was told how they are thought to have died.

And then I’ve stupidly googled how many bodies lie on Everest and looked at photos 🤦‍♀️

Scorpion84 · 28/02/2025 13:18

Where can I find the last mountain please ? And find it on ch4 player ?

TwigsAndBranches · 28/02/2025 13:21

The Last Mountain is on iplayer

TwigsAndBranches · 28/02/2025 13:24

The amount of bodies and litter on Mt Everest is so awful ☹️ yet there are queues of people still trying to reach the top.
My friend climbed Snowdon last year and said it was a snails pace due to the queues because of volume of people wanting to reach the summit. I get people wanting to do it - but what is left behind is devastating.

@crosskeysgreen going to put that on now! I’m on maternity leave and at home for today , sounds interesting!

Which one?!

How bad is Rain in my heart? Is it gruesome? I’m not googling any recommendations in case it gives anything away so going purely on recommendations on here for the ones I haven’t already seen.

I agree with pp about the once upon a time in Iraq/NI - how much we were gaslighted in the 80s and 90s. Patrick Kielty has a documentary (his dad was murdered during the Troubles) and that is a ‘good’ watch too

It's very raw. I did find it completely compelling, it's so real.

Actually, maybe everyone should watch it. Maybe addicts/addiction would be treated with more compassion.

I can't get over how incredibly selfish it is to go climbing Mount Everest when you have children.

Pisses me off that they're seen as heroes when they're actually risking their young children growing up without a father.

Horrace · 28/02/2025 13:55

The Deepest Breath is the best I've watched. On Netflix. So good, I watched again immediately after.

I'm now hooked on watching free diving with the sound off on YouTube

lucindalucinsa · 28/02/2025 13:56

An otter love story on Disney. Totally wonderful.

I'm just starting "Toxic Town" on Netflix which is based on a true story - looks good so far.

"Dreams of a life" was so thought provoking and sad.

Dreams of a life is just so hard hitting. I just want to know so much more about her.

Tell me who I am - very hard hitting and shocking beyond words. This sort of documentary makes you feel grateful for whatever awful childhood you may have had.

Three perfect strangers - shocking to the core again when you realise what was behind this situation. Very good documentary.

I watched Rain in my heart about 4 years ago after a recommendation on here, it still stays with me now, it's very very sad.

The last mountain - I think the dad is a stoic man, level headed but not uncaring at all

Just googled this. It looks fantastic!
Reminded me that I loved My Octopus Teacher, on Netflix I think.

Ooh addictions is a bit close to home - not sure whether to try it.

I agree - and was a mountain climber himself so understood where his wife and son were coming from.
I found it sad when he said they would both be mortified at anyone having to rescue them as it was their choice and they knew the risks - or something like that. Like i said ^^ up there - there was something deep in them that lead to do those things that most of us can’t imagine.

@Artyblartfast it's Northern Ireland....

Metalhead · 28/02/2025 21:32

Free Solo about a free climber in the US attempting some crazy climb up a vertical rock face in Yosemite. Absolutely insane, I could not get my head around how or why that anyone would do this.

I know...so sorry....my phone kept doing auto correct to the wrong words. I didn't notice. Then did. Then tried to correct it. Then corrected it wrong.

Forgive me. I have a chronic illness that gives brain fog. I will try and check more carefully 🙈

This new phone seems worse than the old one.

Mittens67 · 28/02/2025 22:23

Lucan on iplayer. Absolutely fascinating. About the son of the woman who was murdered by Lord Lucan who then disappeared. Three episodes. I was gobsmacked at the end.

Tormundsbeard · 28/02/2025 22:29

Devil in the Family on Disney plus is a good documentary. I can’t remember hearing about the case in the news at the time. Pretty shocking.

creamcheeseandlox · 28/02/2025 22:30

"in vogue: the 90's" on Disney is good. About the fashion industry in the 90's.

Toxic town, three identical strangers, boybands forever on iPlayer.

Friendofdennis · 28/02/2025 22:40

The Storyville documentary about women’s football is so interesting and frustrating in equal measure. Some of the pioneers of women’s football were outstanding athletes. Can’t remember the name sorry Gives an insight into how women’s football was ‘shut down’ in the early days and why and charts the determination of many women to forge ahead

SlightlyJaded · 28/02/2025 23:14

I love a 'mountaineering doc' - I still think Touching the Void is the best one - but also loved The Last Mountain, Free Solo and The Dawn Wall - actually The Dawn Wall is amazing

I will never forget Rain in my Heart - I watched it years ago and still think about it. Ditto 'The Boy Whose Skin Fell Off' (inspirational but you will need tissues).

Off all the 'true crime' docs I've seen lately, the one that had me shouting at the TV the most was 'Abducted in Plain Sight' - I COULD NOT get my head around the madness of that one. And American Murder - The Family Next Door.

I'd also recommend Hoop Dreams, Grey Gardens, Fyre (bonkers), Searching for Sugarman and They Shall Not Grow Old.

Love a doc, me.

veryvanessa · 01/03/2025 08:42

Lucan is incredible and brilliantly made. It wasn't at all what I expected and has really stayed with me.

Agree with everyone about Rain In My Heart. Have never forgotten it and I watched it years ago.

The Murder Trial programmes on bbc are really compelling. Amazing to see real courts and the stories are extraordinary.

Bbq1 · 01/03/2025 12:33

Escape to Utopia is a fascinating watch.
