Sunday evening childrens shows 80's/90's Narnia etc

I found a copy of the chronicles of narnia the old bbc series in a charity shop and have been watching it one episode a week with the youngest on a Sunday evening like I did back in the day.
DS is not a fan of t.v shows and films and often finds they cause him anxiety but this I think due to episode length and mild content worked for him. Now we've finished the whole set I am trying to find reccomendations of similar things we could watch.
I remember the borrowers but does anyone have any other reccomendations?

DrMauraIsles · 14/02/2025 17:24

The Phoenix and the carpet, loved that one

BertieBotts · 14/02/2025 17:25

They weren't shown in the evenings, more on CBBC after school slot but I loved Woof, Aquila, Out Of Sight, The Worst Witch, Bernard's Watch.

Not sure if they are the right age range for you.

Most of them are on youtube Smile I had a great time rewatching Aquila particularly.

Isn’t it sad the BBC doesn't make series like this anymore? I work with years 1 and 2 and it depresses me how many of my pupils watch American rubbish on YouTube.

Yestothis · 14/02/2025 17:31

Not Children of the Stones!

The lack of schools programmes too. They used to make really good documentary type programmes for ks3. They haven’t made any for years.

Malory towers is on iplayer too

They do make some.
They are on the CBBC channel mostly.
I'm not up to date completely but I know in the last few years there has been Hetty Feather, Malory Towers, Dodger (as in from Oliver Twist), a new version of Famous Five (apparently not that great unfortunately).
For modern set programmes there has been various adaptions of Jacqueline Wilson books.
I'm sure there's more....my mind is just a bit blank thinking off the top of my head.

I used to love the Chronicles of Narnia at Sunday teatime! Especially the Voyage of the Dawn Treader with the ship with the purple sail. I can see it now…

The Phoenix and the Carpet was lovely too, when the children find the Psammead buried in the sand, and keep making flawed wishes. I think they wished their little brother wasn’t such a baby and he turned into an adult in one episode.

My favourite BBC series though was Little Sir Nicholas. About a little boy who is heir to a big estate by the sea, but gets shipwrecked and presumed dead, but actually ends up in France and is brought up by a poor French family. So a new heir needs to be found and it’s this obnoxious boy called Gerald, but then Little Nicholas is found in France and brought back, but now he’s scared of the sea and can’t even speak English, so everyone is divided over who would be the best heir.

Moondial was great but not maybe for those of a nervous nature. Definitely agree with Tom's midnight garden but the series made around 1988/89 not the dreadful film adaptation from about 20 years ago. Secret world of Polly Flint was good. Letterland was one of my favourites when I was young enough. My DS also loved supergran when we got into 80s tv a couple of years ago. It's brilliant watching one at a time instead of binging. I watched the box of delights in the run up to Christmas and seeing the last episode on Christmas Eve took me right back to how excited I was 40 years ago to find out what happened at the end. Streaming is great but some magic and anticipation has been lost.

They're very expensive to make sadly. Also most of kids tv is banished to separate channels. The BBC has got very little money and they are the only channel that traditionally made classics as tv dramas for children. And the trending thought is don't make anything old fashioned and involving middle class families etc. if you do you need to update the story because today's kids can't cope with anything not directly from their own experiences apparently or so all knowing patronising adults would have it Hmm

I miss the Jackanory concept of a story read over a few days. That surely wasn't too expensive to make?

Needmorelego · 14/02/2025 18:13

@tobee I guess you haven't watched Malory Towers and Famous Five.
You can't get much more middle class and old fashioned as that 😂

Hiphopopotamonster · 14/02/2025 18:15

Definitely the phoenix and the carpet.

Also the children of the new forest - I remember this being a great Sunday night one as a kid.

NoraLuka · 14/02/2025 18:19

Round the twist - Australian kids who live in a lighthouse, I think each episode was a separate story. It was kind of a kid’s version of black mirror I think.

I agree with the Psammead as someone said above. I always thought that had a similar feel to Narnia for some reason.

There was one with a girl from the future who comes to live with a 90s family. I can’t remember the name or the names of any of the characters but always wanted to get home in time to watch it!

FadedRed · 14/02/2025 18:23

Merlin?

Not Children of the Stones!

I loved this! Also A little Princess and Thursdays Child. Kizzy , Toms Midnight garden and The secret garden.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 14/02/2025 18:36

@ridingfreely we used to watch that at school sometimes in the afternoon. As well as Earthwarp and Geordie Racer. Both of which I can still remember the theme tunes for!

@Puddlewoman your thread has reminded me of a Sunday evening kids drama that I was really into, probably around 1993 time and my dad abruptly banned me from watching halfway through. Can't think why because there can't have been anything salacious happening at that time on BBC one. Going to have to do some googling now, wish I could remember the name of it

Snozzlemaid · 14/02/2025 18:39

For those that mentioned The Box of Delights, it's on iPlayer at the moment.
