Sunday evening childrens shows 80's/90's Narnia etc

I found a copy of the chronicles of narnia the old bbc series in a charity shop and have been watching it one episode a week with the youngest on a Sunday evening like I did back in the day.
DS is not a fan of t.v shows and films and often finds they cause him anxiety but this I think due to episode length and mild content worked for him. Now we've finished the whole set I am trying to find reccomendations of similar things we could watch.
I remember the borrowers but does anyone have any other reccomendations?

I used to love sitting down on a Sunday to watch The Chronicles of Narnia, such fond memories.

Five children and it (bbc series not the film which is not as good).

Might be a bit “girly” depending on your DS’s preferences, but the Megan Followes Anne of Green Gables is available on DVD and is the best adaptation.

Toms midnight garden

Yes, this was great! And Moondial. And I'm sure I read that there was a series of the Children of Green Knowe in the early 80s or something. I don't remember that one but I loved the books.

Spiller in the 1992/1993 version of the Borrowers was my sexual awakening 🤩

Before I got to the bottom of the thread I thought I was the only person who’d watched Five Children And It - I tell the dog she looks like the creature thing when she wakes up and my partner denies all knowledge! 😝

Round the twist - Australian kids who live in a lighthouse, I think each episode was a separate story. It was kind of a kid’s version of black mirror I think.

I agree with the Psammead as someone said above. I always thought that had a similar feel to Narnia for some reason.

There was one with a girl from the future who comes to live with a 90s family. I can’t remember the name or the names of any of the characters but always wanted to get home in time to watch it!

Oooh that was the Girl from Tomorrow! Early/ mid 90s Aussie drama. I loved it!

A few years back the Phillip pulman books were made into a tv show.
We watched them as a family and it really reminded me of that Sunday evening vibe!

Nousernameforme · 14/02/2025 19:02

Oh wow lots to be going on with and a few memories brought to the surface. I remember going round with my headband wrapped round my head ala girl from tomorrow 🤦‍♀️ I will have to look these up on amazon/youtube

Trainstrike · 14/02/2025 19:03

Oh my God Phoenix and the Carpet was one of my favourite shows and I'd completely forgotten it til now, thank you!

Veryverycalmnow · 14/02/2025 19:06

The Box of Delights is a good one, similar feeling to Narnia series. I also remember the Owl Service is a nice one. I find programmes from that time so soothing! Much slower pace and gentler to watch.

I watched series one back to back a few weeks ago on Amazon Prime as I had sleep-resistant toddler keeping me up very late. I loved that programme as a child, but my goodness it really is strange 😂 still good, though.

Our dc love watching The Famous Five from the 70s on YouTube.

jay55 · 14/02/2025 19:27

The borrowers was in that same Sunday teatime slot back in the day.

JSMill · 14/02/2025 19:32

Jackanory was great. Even if I wasn't particularly keen on the book of the week, it was a cosy, relaxing watch after school.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 14/02/2025 19:46

@Teaformenow it's too catchy!
Have you heard the word,
About the bird and the spider,
That wiggled and wriggled and jiggled inside her? Well, have you ever, ever felt like this?
Have strange things happened,
Are you going round the twist? Have you ever, ever felt like this?

Have you ever, ever felt like this? Have you ever, ever felt like this?
Have strange things happened,
Are you going round the twist? If all the king's horses
And all the king's men,
Couldn't put me back together again. I'd say...
Rain, rain, go away,
Come again another day. Have you ever, ever felt like this?
Have strange things happened,
Are you going round the twist? Have you ever, ever felt like this?

Round the twist- so good. I was looking for this unsuccessfully the other day for my 10 year old
