Netflix price hikes - just too much?

I really think so this time. The standard package is going up by £2 to £12.99 a month. The fancy bells and whistles package will increase by a £1 and the basic package with ads is also increasing by a pound. As well as that, it will cost £1 a month more to add an extra member who doesn't live with you (after their crackdown on password sharing a little while ago).

The last price increase was only October 2023, I believe.

We pay for my elderly parents to be extra members so it will mean our monthly bill goes from £15.98, which was already pushing it, to £18.98 a month. It's becoming extortionate. We've had Netflix continously since about 2012/13, when it was very affordable. I just think that they are really pushing it now, and it's time for an extended break from Netflix.

People on the Premier package will be paying a fortune. For a TV streaming service, one amongst many. It's so much more expensive than Amazon Prime, Now, Disney, Apple etc. I don't know how they can justify it really.

What does anyone else think?

Oh wow, I didn’t know it was going up. I’ve had the £10.99 package, only since they stopped me being able to share DD’s account (she moved out in 2020)!

I don’t watch it myself and only got it for when my little grandsons visit, the eldest informed me a few years ago that he preferred Paw Patrol without adverts. Now he’s 8 he watches Henry Danger, Miraculous, and But Is It Cake, occasionally Spider-Man, the younger ones like Miraculous and Peppa Pig. I have a basic £15/month Sky package, so the cartoons are probably on kids’ channels, I guess I’ll be ditching Netflix now.

StormingNorman · 07/02/2025 21:17

I have Prime, Netflix, Disney, Hayu and Paramount.

I find a lot to watch on Netflix so will just pay the uplift,

GellerYeller · 07/02/2025 21:23

We have Sky including Netflix and broadband and need a rethink, so this is useful info, thanks OP for starting the thread!
Disney, absolutely awful to navigate.
Amazon: meh
Paramount Plus: Binged (new)Frasier and Yellowstone during a free trial.
Not TV, but Spotify family gets more use than anything.

Amazon Music is increasing in price too. I just received an email with the updated prices for our next renewal.

Yeah, I cancelled this (Amazon Music) about 5 months ago too. I wasn't using it 95% of the time, I just had the radio on. So I felt I was wasting money. The money I saved paid for ITVX Premium which DH and I get waaaay more use out of. Smile (I had the little Alexa Dot, and it was £5.99 a month. Started off as £3.99 a month just 3 years ago. So I was paying £72 a year and hardly using it.)

ALSO, you can get free music on Alexa, without paying for Amazon music. When you have cancelled your subscription, just say (eg) 'ALEXA, play music by Mariah Carey, or Taylor Swift, or Celine Dion' - (or whatever you fancy.) Then she says 'Amazon music is £5.99 per month for one single device, (or £10.99 for unlimited music) etc... would you like me to start Amazon music for you?'

Say NO. Then Alexa says 'I can play similar music for free....' Then some songs by the artist you requested come on. I got 6 of Mariah Carey the other day, and 8 songs by Celine Dion, then Alexa carried on playing music by similar artists. So yeah tl;dr, you can get a bunch of free music on your Alexa! Smile No need to pay £72 a year for one device, or £130 a year for unlimited! AND you get all the radio stations still too (even without Amazon tunes...)

.

I have standard (cheapest) Netflix and doubt I'll cancel as there is so much to watch, I do like the international series, some of them have been brilliant.

I have got used to subtitles, I think it's really good value.

Same
we also have fire stick so this and Amazon is the only subscription we pay.

I can’t believe people still pay £30/40 for sky!

i watch Netflix on the app too and like to download things for when out and about away from
home

I think it’s still a great price for what you get - cheaper than an evening out to watch one film at cinema

Pickandmixusername · 07/02/2025 22:15

I cancelled my netflix recently as there was nothing I wanted to watch on there.

We do have other subscriptions though. Our kids like disney+ and I watch some things on Now and Prime. Netflix hasn't had anything good on there (for me) in a while.

Normallynumb · 08/02/2025 00:07

I have the basic £4.99 per month one
I don't think the adverts are much of an interruption.

BurntBroccoli · 08/02/2025 00:49

I've just cancelled Netflix and Disney + on the back of this thread. Have looked for something to watch a few times this week and can't find anything.
I have Now TV at £3.99 special offer for 6 months and Prime (but I use that for ordering). Adverts on Now tv are annoying though considering it's a pay for service.
Pay for BBC licence too.

Toddlerhelpplease123 · 08/02/2025 01:37

We do still have Netflix but cycle through the others. Did Now at Xmas for House of Dragons and then the Lockerbie drama. I find they only release things worth watching a few times a year.

Interesting about ITVx. Will have to try that next.

Might start cycling Netflix too but don’t want to lose our data.

JoyousGreyOrca · 08/02/2025 01:52

We will cancel it. I only started it again at Christmas. But already not using it much as there is not that many new interesting things on there anywhere. The quality of much of what is on offer is really poor.

Pemba · 07/02/2025 19:18

Although I have loved series like Black Mirror, Stranger Things and The Crown. And I do think that Netflix has the most user friendly interface (is that the right term?)

I loved Black Doves, and also all the Harlan Coben adaptations, such as the latest one, Missing You.

JoyousGreyOrca · 08/02/2025 02:28

BooneyBeautiful · 08/02/2025 02:00

I loved Black Doves, and also all the Harlan Coben adaptations, such as the latest one, Missing You.

But once you have watched the ten things worth watching on Netflix, you are pretty much done. The new things that are really good are far and few between. Most of it is trashy, or is BBC drama that you can watch on iplayer anyway.

Miratea · 08/02/2025 02:40

You are getting to watch so many shows for that though. It’s a bargain. Remember when you had to pay for each DVD

WomanFromTheNorth · 08/02/2025 03:36

I've tried to cancel Amazon - don't want to give more money to fascist billionaires who want to take over the world - but ds keeps joining us up again. Netflix is expensive in comparison but you get a lot more to watch. I hadn't realised it was going up again.

Ladyandherspaniel · 07/02/2025 18:49

I agree and with the likes of Molly-Mae and the Boyzone documentary being shown elsewhere the competition is closing in . Netflix will out price themselves .

These are some of the last shows on earth I'd be watching. Molly-Mae documentary is your example of amazing telly? Hilarious, sorry

Op, I agree these charges are getting out of hand! I do love netflix though, plenty enjoyed recently like The Night Agent, The Recruit, American Primeval to name a few. I tend to cycle though, so maybe 6mths of Netflix and then I do a few months of Amazon, Disney etc. Best way to do it, as it all adds up! I'm sick of paying for so many different subscriptions...

I probably only watch about six series a year though from Netflix so probably would be cheaper to buy the DVDs, I find it annoying having to subscribe to all the different streamers to pick a few good shows from each, sometimes I have to watch series on up to 3 different platforms to watch the whole lot and hope it's not removed before the end. DVDs were certainly cheaper and I owned them, no adverts to pay to skip either

BobnLen · 08/02/2025 06:34

Anyone watching Yellowstone will have to get Paramount to watch the end and the spinoffs. Anyone watching Manifest is still missing the middle series, what use is that and will have to get Now to watch the middle as there is only seasons 1, 2 and 4 on there. Prime is also guilty of this.

Same thing happened with Hacks (anyone else love this show?). The first two seasons were and still are on Prime, but the third
is on Now. I recently re-subscribed to Now just to watch this and the third seasons of The White Lotus and And Just Like That at a whopping £16 a month with no pesky ads but the quality of the TV shows on there (Lockerbie, Succession etc) has always justified the price.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 08/02/2025 08:19

I have Prime abd Netflix. I signed up for a disney plus on a 3 month offer, didn't use it once. I watch Netflix most days tbh , dobt really watch "live" TV.

Can I still add my parents to it then, I thought that wasn't allowed any more?

Pickandmixusername · 08/02/2025 08:53

Now has And Just Like That, White Lotus, The Penguin and Day of the Jackal. Prime has Handmaid's Tale.

I did watch Motherland, Peep Show, Kaos and Bojack Horseman on Netflix. But they've all been cancelled.

Disney has lots for kids but also Star Wars movies, Die Hard movies, Modern Family, Rivals and a few good rom coms. None of it groundbreaking obviously, but good easy viewing (for me, personal taste etc etc)

Pemba · 08/02/2025 09:04

@Illbefinejustbloodyfine you can add someone if you are on the Standard or Premium packages, not if you're on the cheapest one with ads. But you have to do it officially and it costs you £4.99 a month, soon to rise to £5.99.

Edited

Should say I only pay £3.99 for Now, £4.99 for Disney and £8.99 for Prime (which we need annoyingly, for our daughter's Alexa)

BurntBroccoli · 08/02/2025 10:19

@westisbest1982
I just keep cancelling NowTv and always get special offers to join for £3.99 for 6 months. (I add the date to cancel in my calendar straight away).

You can add Boost for £6 so no adverts.

westisbest1982 · 08/02/2025 10:31

@BurntBroccoli I did that for a couple of years but they got wise to me because when I recently went to re-subscribe they only offered me the £5.99 per month deal and the optional boost / no ads thing for £6 which I added. I’m also locked in for six months. But I do think it’s worth it. I just checked and I’m actually only paying £12 a month now, not £16 as I mentioned earlier. I’m really excited for the new season of The White Lotus.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 08/02/2025 10:43

Thanks @Pemba , the DC would benefit from having Neetflux at my parents house so I might take it up
