Netflix price hikes - just too much?

I really think so this time. The standard package is going up by £2 to £12.99 a month. The fancy bells and whistles package will increase by a £1 and the basic package with ads is also increasing by a pound. As well as that, it will cost £1 a month more to add an extra member who doesn't live with you (after their crackdown on password sharing a little while ago).

The last price increase was only October 2023, I believe.

We pay for my elderly parents to be extra members so it will mean our monthly bill goes from £15.98, which was already pushing it, to £18.98 a month. It's becoming extortionate. We've had Netflix continously since about 2012/13, when it was very affordable. I just think that they are really pushing it now, and it's time for an extended break from Netflix.

People on the Premier package will be paying a fortune. For a TV streaming service, one amongst many. It's so much more expensive than Amazon Prime, Now, Disney, Apple etc. I don't know how they can justify it really.

What does anyone else think?

I agree and with the likes of Molly-Mae and the Boyzone documentary being shown elsewhere the competition is closing in . Netflix will out price themselves .

obsessedwithfreshbread · 07/02/2025 18:58

I'm going to make the DSC choose which service we cut out currently have, probably have a couple on rotation a couple of months of one then switch -
Amazon - that's staying because we use prime delivery so much
Discovery+ - but we piggy back off my dads subscription for that
Disney
Now
Netflix
Apple

MumChp · 07/02/2025 18:59

We have skipped Netflix, yes. Too expensive for what it really is.

purpleme12 · 07/02/2025 19:01

I have the cheapest one with adverts
But I'm a weirdo who doesn't mind adverts anyway

timeforachange999 · 07/02/2025 19:05

We watch a lot of netflix so will pay the new subscription. I cancelled Disney plus though after the year expired as I can never find anything on there and DS seems to have outgrown most things he watched on there. Also cancelled Apple TV. As they seem to stream weekly I plan to dip back into Apple TV when there is a whole season ready to watch (Slow Horses season 4 and the next season of the morning show). We've never had now tv although there is a film HD wants to watch which is only available there so might do a 7 day free trial.

MigGril · 07/02/2025 19:07

You could say we cheat. We swap and change our subscriptions on a regular baise.
We have amazon prime as we use prime delivery a lot. We have apple TV as DH currently gets it free with his bank. We have Disney+ as we watch a lot of the content regularly, but you can use tesco club card vouchers to reduce the cost.

We have had Netflix and Paramount+ as well but only for a few months at a time to watch the things we are interested in. I think having them all the time is a waste and to expensive.

Gabitule · 07/02/2025 19:07

At least we have the option to cancel our subscriptions, but water charges in London are going up by 40% 😭.
I don't dare to think what the council tax will be like from April

TurquoiseDress · 07/02/2025 19:13

I've always wondered about getting Netflix but the price hikes really put me off

What are the stand out series on there?

Saw above there was Molly Mae (who ?reality star)

Pemba · 07/02/2025 19:15

£227 a year for us! Or £155 if we didn't have mum and dad on there. It makes the £95 a year for Amazon Prime membership look very reasonable indeed. And with that you get all the benefits of next day delivery and other perks.

I know it is bad to let Jeff Bezos take over everything, but still...

Although I have loved series like Black Mirror, Stranger Things and The Crown. And I do think that Netflix has the most user friendly interface (is that the right term?)

SnowdropPancake · 07/02/2025 19:22

I agree.

It's included as part of our Sky package so the price increases don't impact me (yet!) and it just cost me £6pm on top of the package to add it.

If I were paying Netflix direct and they pulled this price increase on top of a rather poor selection of things I want to watch these days (they used to be better), I think it'd send me over the edge to quit.

TurquoiseDress · 07/02/2025 19:32

Ah yes The Crown and Stranger Things are ones I've heard of/would fancy watching

MrsLargeEmbodied · 07/02/2025 19:34

yes if Interface is the right word @Pemba i agree, Disney is terrible.
got rid of disney+ recently and went with Netflix for Black Dove, but gave up with that but kept Netflix
struggle to see what is on disney+

Stepfordian · 07/02/2025 19:36

We cancelled NetFlix ages ago, it has nothing watchable on it that I haven’t watched a hundred times before.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 07/02/2025 19:36

Apple Cider Vinegar has good reviews, and that is on Netflix

What about changing to the standard with ads package? you could set up a separate membership for your parents - paying two lots of that package would be much cheaper than what you have quoted and the ads are not really that noticeable.

Moier · 07/02/2025 19:39

I have the basic £4.99 a month one.
Gey everything on Netflix.. just a few more adverts and l mean few. Not like ITV etc with loads.

BobnLen · 07/02/2025 19:44

I dip in and out of Netflix as it is expensive to pay a month and not watch anything, also no cheaper yearly option like the others. I deliberately didn't add it in with Sky as it is more difficult to cancel it, you have to ring them up. I have the standard £10.99 one as I pay to get rid of adverts on all the streamers if I can. A lot of Netflix is old stuff that I have already seen on BBC, Sky and Paramount anyway

narcASD · 07/02/2025 19:54

I have standard (cheapest) Netflix and doubt I'll cancel as there is so much to watch, I do like the international series, some of them have been brilliant.

I have got used to subtitles, I think it's really good value.

dothedanceofjoy · 07/02/2025 19:56

God, that is getting a bit pricey now.

I'll probably keep it as I'm a big rewatcher and it has things like Seinfeld, Archer, Always Sunny, Brookyn 99. I watch all of those quite often.

I also find it the most user friendly of the streamers. Prime is frustrating because of the ads and not everything has subtitles. Disney+ I get through my bank, so that's staying. I might ditch Apple TV once Severance has finished.

westisbest1982 · 07/02/2025 19:58

Yes it's too much, especially considering how well the company is doing, but business is business, I suppose. I rotate my subscriptions and have Netflix for the odd month as I can't justify having it all the time. I had the £10.99 plan a couple of times last year as I can't bear ads and will probably fork out the £12.99 for the same plan at some point later this year for one month when there's some intriguing content on there like the second season of Nobody Wants This.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 07/02/2025 20:00

i agree with prime not often having subtitles and by the time you have found a film, loaded it, and then find out there are no subtitles it is frustrating. so dont really bother

FallOfSloths · 07/02/2025 20:01

I also rotate. I can very rarely find anything on Amazon prime or Disney that I want to watch, although Disney is at least useful for kids films (although I find it really tiresome that all the films eg Frozen can only be viewed through the adult account). Maybe they need an 'older child' setting. It's weird that the choice is completely locked down Vs everything available.

BobnLen · 07/02/2025 20:05

I don't think there are any new series I watch due until the summer so I will probably ditch it until then, I have all the other ones to watch, which are cheaper, Disney with Tesco Clubcard, Paramount, free with Sky, Prime has got the delivery, Apple I get annually as most stuff is weekly and I have exhausted all the free trials

Blarn · 07/02/2025 20:10

We have amazon prime but only because we have prime for the dcs Fures Kids. Netflix is the only other streaming thing we have and we watch a lot on it. So dodc, they can always find something they are happy with. Perhaps though I'm not bothered about the price as dh pays! But the amount we watch it it seems worth it. And we can watch without adverts unlike the ridiculous Prime.
