I thought it was funnier than Motherland.

some of my favourite bits:
Joanna Lumley calling her carer her PA & trying to escape
Anne having a PhD from Imperial
Johannes and Your Highness, and his ridiculously OTT accent
Joanna Lumley taking his money
Mal & Della taking e and then getting a real downer the next day
jokes about catfishing, perimenopause, my new dad etc

I loved the whole programme but I'm still thinking about Mal! He was just lovely in every way.

He was. He obviously fancies the pants off Amanda (and vice versa) and it's a bit of a will they/ won't they? I did think Anne might end up lunging at him in the pub (I mean, she's only human 😉) - think it was when Amanda bombed her out to go to Della and Fi's. Did we ever see Anne's husband in Motherland?

MabelMora · 11/02/2025 23:00

Mal & Della off their tits was properly funny 🤣.

The camel with the tiny hat was very poignant!

Superhansrantowindsor · 12/02/2025 07:23

I found the bit with Anne in the showers on the campsite horrible. Really not funny.

The rest of it is ok but I can’t relate to the characters like I did with Liz and Julia so didn’t find it as good as Motherland.

KiIIingMeDeftly · 12/02/2025 08:00

Yes, Anne turning into a peeping Tom was a weird place for the writers to go.

SantasLargerHelper · 12/02/2025 09:09

I think that's peri menopause though. I got this huge rush of hormones that basically turned me into a horny teenager. I completely understood how men feel for a while. I was assessing every man i met for fitness 😅

the80sweregreat · 12/02/2025 09:21

Anne was with her husband at a young age and probably a big naive about other men , so she was just curious I think , even if it came across as creepy. It was out of character, but she is a bit of an odd ball

DataColour · 12/02/2025 09:56

It was a bit creepy, the peeping tom thing. I was watching it with my 14yr old DD and she said that would never be acceptable or shown on TV if the sexes were reversed, good point.
But totally get the peri-menopausal thing though. I'm going through it right now and I have such a crush on a certain actor and cant' stop thinking about him and it's driving DH nuts with my mentionitis! Like Anne, I met DH pretty young. But I'd never go peeping around in the men's showers, haha!

Well, no, because if the sexes were reversed there’d be no comedy, because men creeping on women isn’t unusual.

Explain to your daughter that we’re not on a level playing field.

Well, as per pp said, it wasn't funny, so it didn't work comedically.

LunaNorth · 12/02/2025 12:06

It made me laugh.

Same here, @LunaNorth , I think because it was so out of character for Anne and she was totally shocked at herself!

paranoidnamechanger · 12/02/2025 13:51

It was woefully misjudged and about as funny as a hot poker up your arse. I reminded me of Benny Hill, and that was shit then, just like it is now, regardless of gender.

Artyblartfast · 12/02/2025 16:48

@paranoidnamechanger don't hold back, tell us what you really thought 😂

Benny Hill Laughing GIF by tylaum

😁

the80sweregreat · 12/02/2025 18:22

It wasn't as bad as Benny Hill 😆
( I remember the BH show )
However, I know it wouldn't have appealed to my mum and was an acquired taste!
I enjoyed it myself , it did make me laugh.

tennissquare · 12/02/2025 21:05

"Shin Fame" is 1 of my favourite lines!

DC2008 · 12/02/2025 22:17

I couldn’t get through the first episode- it’s absolutely dire. The 2 weakest characters from Motherland, and it’s just not funny.

Peter S had his own sketch show in the 00s and it was funny ! Short lived, but amusing

We've been watching on you tube, love him !

Awww just finished it. It was fab.

I luff Mal. He is 😍😍😍

It was just lovely. Joanna Lumley is amazing and Anne just fabulous.

Love love it. (I have had wine though and it's only Tuesday 😁)

Mal/Samuel Anderson is a ride

Newgirls · 13/02/2025 09:16

Loved it! Great cast throughout.

anne might have moved for the school catchment? Plenty have done it 😉

really liked the hipster chef - I know a few of those

some excellent one liners - brilliant writing.

wildfellhall · 13/02/2025 10:51

I've only seen a couple and there are some great things here and some of it is very good (parents evening was spot on).

My problem with it is that I used to turn on for Anna Maxwell Martin whose character is profoundly central and everything leads back to her and however awful she is I always just loved her.

The Amanda character (really well played by the actress) is more of the baddie who comes in to create tension; but she's so unlikeabke that I don't feel drawn back to watch more - although I might. I love the Irish mate is it Ann? And the weary neighbour is caresble about. But Amanda doesn't engage my heart. Whereas Julia - I cared for her whatever happened.

Hollieandtheivie · 13/02/2025 11:32

Oh, see I'm the other way around. I found Julia insufferable, and towards to end we saw more of Amanda's human frailties: her mother's toxicity, the breakdown of the marriage, sleeping with someone at a low point, the crumbling facade. I had more empathy towards Amanda. Wonder what that says about me 😆
